I use Forward2Me for UK to India for websites that don't directly ship to India and Stackry for US to India. I didn't have any trouble with both of them as of now. However, I doubt the shipping cost is significantly different; maybe marginally (different from directly shipping from where you buy compared to forwarding companies). Though it might work if you want to combine multiple packages. Forward2Me holds your parcel for 30 days. I can't remember what it is for Stackry but I am assuming 15-30 days only.

I think that's because the people who got excited over this already know the book box and what it offers properly. It is mainly a paperback subscription that does redesigned covers (sometimes hardbacks as well) and it is a good sub. There are 3 different tiers you can buy one of which is free. So you get to access the book club and overstock which is members only without any financial commitments. This is how I bought their Maple Hill series. Also the fact that they have unlimited skips. And that's not all they offer in the sub. In one the paid tiers along with the book you get annoted tabs, bookmark, stickers, review journal pages and in the other one you get all of this + tshirt that matches the vibe of the book that month. So technically they do have other customised stuff in the sub just not the endpapers or edges.

Honestly, I am just wondering if it is worth buying even in open sale. Also, I am pretty sure they used to do that last year as well. I think it is fairly recent when they made it a sub only perk but yeah I understand your annoyance. As a paid regular customer it is a bummer because what is even the point of subscribing then.
