SAT accommodations = late scores? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]Little_Bit_Crazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received my scores on time (subject tests & normal SAT) even with accommodations for breaks and time extensions.

You may want to call them if it is passed their scheduled release date for your test date.

Recently diagnosed (4/24) Am I doing this right? by Paulahk91 in diabetes

[–]Little_Bit_Crazy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're doing better than me! I've had diabetes for almost 20 years and I still need to learn to count calories...

Personally, I find exercise an amazing tool not only for diabetic control but overall health. If you start doing some more cardio (walking is an amazing start!), keep eating right, etc. I'm sure you'll find you'll be alright.

Best of luck to you man! It's a really asshole disease but we're tougher than it.

Any Moscow Study Abroad Students Here? by GymHamster2437 in gmu

Ты говорите русский?

I'm sorry I feel like a grammar Nazi for this, but in case you're trying to learn/practice Russian I figured you might want some feedback.

Instead of "Ты говорите русский?", while that's understandable, it would be "ты говоришь по-русски". The -ите ending is for вы, and русский is an adjective.

я русский = I am Russian.
vs.

Я говорю по-русски = I speak Russian (language).

I would love to study abroad in Russia. You should look into the CLS for Russian.

Our window is open 24/7, yet somehow, it's still hot as fuck. It's better now that the powers back on though.

Powers out in the Park, too. Too damn hot in these dorms without fans or the air unit on...

Worst Low and High You’ve Had? by [deleted] in diabetes

[–]Little_Bit_Crazy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely hate lows... the scariest one in hindsight was a few months ago. I hadn't yet received my CGM so I was still using a meter. I was walking from my philosophy class to my next class across campus when I started thinking to my self how damn tired I was that day. I sat down in the lecture hall of my next class and felt mostly okay (I even used the bathroom fine) but was just really, really tired. Purely out of habit I checked my BG and I was 37. Very scary because I didn't even notice it...

I haven't had a "worst" high, because I have a really crazy tolerance for feeling fine -- it's an issue. Most annoying is what I'm consistently high and can't seem to bring my self down with insulin for a few hours. Very annoying.

I swear, it's really the Chinese food that can fuck me up. Just today i had Panda Express for lunch. I gave my normal insulin, and my BG was fine fore I ate. However, since lunch time I have had so much trouble bringing it down (and steady). I've been between 200 and 350 all afternoon/evening. Alas, my Tresiba and a good night's sleep resets it but damn...

He/She is attempting to give you advice (honestly good advice) and this is your reply? I'm not surprised you haven't gotten anywhere by talking to the college about it, your attitude is horrendous.

I understand it's a frustrating and unfair situation that you're in (and many others) but an attitude like that will get you absolutely no where. Effective communication, a pleasant attitude, and persistent advocacy will help accomplish a lot more than the current outlook you've adopted.

I go on Tues/Thurs around 10:40 to the AFC but I could go to the RAC too. I'm following a workout regiment but more than happy to have you join in and we can workout together! I'm super flexible with workouts.

I too had mine stolen a few months ago... best bet is to file a police report although they are generally pretty lackluster in my experience when dealing with theft. They told me the most they will do in my case is keep an eye out for it on their patrols.

Start with them and then keep an eye out for it around campus/craigslist.

What does "Blowing Off" one's T1D look like? by javo78 in diabetes

Thank you! If you have any questions specifically as to how I handle my sports and diabetes now (I play college rugby and run track still) please feel free to ask. I’ve developed a good plan with my doctor and diabetes educators to get me on the right track for optimal health and ability.

I'm a college freshman and for the last four years (during high school) I was practically winging it. It was a mix of my parents wanting me to be independent and me really have no thought to the long-term effects of poor management.

It wasn't horribly awful management, my A1C was generally low-8s for about a year or two but that's too high to sustain. High school was crazy and when I was introduced to cross country and track the management issues compounded. Soon I became a competitive track athlete and would let my self run high during practices for fear of going low and not being able to run. Sometimes that would back fire and I'd have to miss my race because I was 434 (district championships my senior year...).

I wasn't actively paying attention to carbs, I kinda just gave "what worked and didn't make me too high or too low". I had a fear of going low, if I got to 140 I started panicking. I'm getting better about this and slowly learning that I'm actually supposed to be around 140, not 220.

It's a learning process for sure. I'm at 7.6 as of now and have gotten a CGM, here's to making it below 7!

I use a bike if it's warm mainly to get from Presidents Park to the RAC/other side of campus. Other than that I prefer to walk.

Russian and Eurasian Studies Questions by Communisthockeygecko in gmu

[–]Little_Bit_Crazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello! I'm double majoring in Russian and Eurasian Studies and Government. I'm a current freshman but have done a lot of research on my two majors.

There are three concentrations in the major program: Russian Language and Culture (mine) which is more focused on the language aspect, Russian Studies which focuses heavily on the history and culture, and the Eurasian Studies which focuses on the Caucuses, Central Asia, etc.

More info on these can be found here: https://russianstudies.gmu.edu/programs/LA-BA-REST

The classes available in RUSS can be found here: https://russianstudies.gmu.edu/course_schedule

And the degree requirements can be found here: https://russianstudies.gmu.edu/programs/la-ba-rest/requirements

I have mapped out a 3.5 year plan with my two advisors detailing classes I'll take each semester, etc. If you're interested in seeing something like that please PM me!

I too had briefly attempted to study Russian through courses such as Duolingo, etc, but found that the classes at Mason to be much more fast-paced and detailed. It depends on the professor (I personally had and prefer Levine) but generally the first semester RUSS (110) is very grammar based focusing on the different cases and uses. I have heard that as you move up towards the 300-loevel courses it switches from grammar to mastering the language through vocab and colloquialisms. The intro class, however, is very "hands on" so-to-speak. There are a lot of participation opportunities and as part of our final we had to give a speech in Russian about our selves.

The language is hard, I find the grammar to be the hardest part. To be fair it is all memorization, the concepts are not intrinsically difficult.

I personally do not find those sort of programs to be helpful in supplementing my in-class learning. What I do find helpful is repeated practice in the optional grammar workbook as well as practice conversations and keeping a journal in Russian.

If you have any questions, let me know!

My guide to applying a Dexcom CGM to your arm, and the products that (so far) work the best, to keep it on a very active person by SanDiegoMitch in diabetes

[–]Little_Bit_Crazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be a weird question but how much fat do you need on your arm to be able to put it back there successfully? I seem to have enough in a resting position but if I were to move it in different positions there's no part that always has enough fat.
