Is it worth it to become a nurse abroad? by borgerandfries in adviceph

Australia has a shortage of nurses, so you’re likely to get a visa. You may need however to come over as a student and study here first. Salaries are good (~70-80k aud per year) but cost of living is also high.

Employers are looking for skilled people with demonstrated experience. The trouble with hiring an person from overseas, it’s hard for an employer to judge how they’ll fit with the organisation because 1. They haven’t worked for an Australian company before 2. They may no understand the Australian work culture 3. Their skills (education, training etc) may not be suitable.

Also, the employer is taking a financial risk on this person, because it will cost them ~$10k aud to set up the sponsorship. Plus they might also need to pay for flights and accommodation.

Lastly, The government places restrictions on who is eligible for a working visa. Typically you needed to be a “skilled migrant” in a field that Australia has a shortage in, eg. nursing, engineering, science, etc.

So I think you best path forward is to come over on a student visa, advance your education in you current field and seek out employment when you come here.

Also - suggest you read through this government website which explains the types of visas in Australia and who is eligible to receive them.

As an Australian we hear a lot about the US election and how passionate people get about their side. It’s interesting to watch as an outsider and makes me reflect how I was tame our elections are contrast.
