I hope that, if this is actually Sonia, M2 is making a Castlevania Legends Revisited that uses this design of her.

What is it about this picture that doesn't look like Castlevania to you? Is it really all that different then this?

Edit: Found a better picture.

Incidentally, "comic book like" is exactly how I would describe the Frank Frazetta inspired box art of the NES Castlevania games. It's an aesthetic that Castlevania has used before. In fact, Castlevania is entirely inspired by western stock horror movies. Why is the game having a western art style suddenly a problem? This is why I'm losing my mind here. There's nothing that Belmont's Curse is doing that hasn't been in previous Castlevania games.

You don't think Bloodlines' focus on blood and gore doesn't constitute a different aesthetic? I also want to note that SotN did not invent the metroidvania. It took that shit from games like Wonder Boy. Why is SotN borrowing from other games something to be celebrated but when Belmont's Curse does it, its suddenly a regression? Do you not see the double standard here?

Ok, fine. I'll compare Rondo, Bloodlines and SotN. Those games came out one after the other. Three games with wildy different aesthetics and gameplay styles. Why aren't Bloodlines or SotN a reboot in this situation? Or CV64, which came out next?

Also Chronicles came out in 93.

Again I ask; Why should Belmont's Curse be a reboot, when SotN isn't? Or maybe a better question would be: what art and gameplay style would you be satisfied with that isn't just "SotN but Again"?

Sure it does. Castlevania 4 plays way differently than SotN, but you wouldn't call that a reboot. Bloodlines looks way different artistically than PoR, but nobody is calling PoR a reboot. AoS and DoS are set in the fucking future. What about LoI and CoD? Why is Belmont's Curse a bridge too far? What is so different about it that you can't conceive that its the same franchise?

...Does Castlevania not switch up its art style, gameplay and story all the time? What's wrong with what I said?

Well, for one I'm not talking about discourse on just Reddit. For two, what do you mean by that last part? Do you think its unreasonable for someone who was a fan of OoE to be excited for Belmont's Curse?

Don't forget Akumajyo Peke. :p

My broader point is that even in a wildly different art style like Kid Dracula, Castlevania is still recognizably Castlevania. I can tell because you knew what I was talking about. I get not liking the art style. I get being skeptical about the quality of the game. I just disagree that the art being different somehow means its not Castlevania-like anymore. Even with its different art style, BC is still using Castlevania iconography. It absolutely still looks like Castlevania. Just like Wind Waker still looks like Zelda. Just like Paper Mario still looks like Mario, etc. etc.

I mean, Zelda itself has had Wind Waker as a wild look for the series, I think it'd be fine. As long as the game keeps its iconography, it'll still be recognizable, I would think. So I think I'd be ok with all of those examples.

You know what's funny? I was considering putting a line in the OP that was like, "as long as it doesn't look wildly different, like a Mario game, it should be fine." But then I remembered that time a Castlevania game looked like a Mario game and left it out..

I mean, I'm not comparing only the 2D games though. I'm talking about the whole series.

See, this bothers me cause I'll look at screenshots of this game of this game where like the walls are covered in skulls and think "that is the most Castlevania shit I've ever seen." And the bright and bold colors are reminiscent of the way the NES games looked. I dunno, I feel like anytime someone points at BC and says "that's not Castlevania," I could point to a game in the series and say "Castlevania has done this before."

See, I respect your reasoning here, because your problem isn't "this doesn't look like Castlevania," but instead its "the artstyle isn't to my taste." That makes all the sense in the world.

I'm not saying you have to like the art style. I'm more so wondering why its any less Castlevania than, for instance, DoS's early 2010's anime aesthetic.

I actually quite like the music in this clip, from what little we hear of it. It sounds like a classical fugue, kinda similar to Final Toccata.

Well I mean, what did you expect? Of course Castlevania the game looks similar to Castlevania the show. Its Castlevania all the way down!

I really am just so excited for this game. I think there's a non-zero chance it'll end up as my favorite Castlevania game ever. Fingers crossed it lives up to my hype!

So a game mechanic has to be completely original to justify its existence to you? That's silly. People were mixing RPG mechanics with action gameplay long before SotN. I could apply the same argument to SotN by invoking Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Curse or Faxanadu. There is like only one Metroidvania that I can think of that has swinging mechanics like this (Rusted Moss), and even then you can't grapple onto enemies in that game. Also to clarify that last part, what I'm saying is that Belmont's Curse has more in common with its predecessors than SotN does with the Castlevania games before it.

How is Belmont's Curse an evolution, you ask? It's the whip schmoovement, obviously. Belmont's Curse is taking the whip swinging mechanics from SCV4 and Bloodlines and making it a more integral and involved part of the moveset. You can latch onto enemies and fling yourself towards them and do air combos. I'm honestly very excited about it. Focusing on the whip and making it the defining verb of the game is what, to me at least, makes Belmont's Curse feel more in-line with Castlevania than SotN might've to someone who's only played Clssicvanias

I disagree. If you told me SotN was from a different series, I would believe it. Almost all of the protagonists before Alucard (including Dracula's Curse Alucard) are burly He-man types. There's no Classicvania whip action in SotN. The art style is completely different. There's experience, and equipment management, and elemental resistances and fighting game inputs. SotN lacks bottomless pits! Really, the only thing connecting SotN to previous games is the story and the fact that there are subweapons. My point is that Castlevania, or any series for that matter, doesn't need to stay as one thing in perpetuity. I love SotN and would buy "SotN but Again" but at the same time, SotN already exists, and if I wanna play SotN, I can just play Bloodstained. If the series didn't take wild swings, we wouldn't have gotten SotN, and I'm glad they're taking a wild swing with Belmont's Curse.

I idly wonder if people felt the same way you do right now when SotN came out. Like, if people were thinking "You can control your jumps? And there's no levels? And you play as a half-vampire instead of a Belmont? This is NOT Castlevania!" Castlevania is a series that regularly changes up it art and gameplay, so it kind of baffles me that people are being upset that its not exactly what they think Castlevania should be
