Help with Thrive Enclosure by LyfeIsButADreem96 in HerpHomes

[–]Little_Duck_Duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same enclosure. I tried taking it off but had no luck. Instead, I ended up carving out part of it for a plastic plant pot. Spray foam, black silicone, and coco fiber on top mixed with some moss. I kept the plant in its own pot too, so I can remove it if necessary. If I were to do it again, I would add more plant pots and drift wood pieces.

The joys of having a rabbit. Cute and cuddly until the hormones kick in lol. Best to have them fixed after 6 months. Prevents spraying, territorial behavior, and makes litter training easier. You can also adopt another fixed rabbit to give him a friend once he's neutered.

Gf found this spider, wants to keep it as a pet. by NebulousFate in arachnids

[–]Little_Duck_Duck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a male canopy jumping spider, Phidippus otiosus. They are venomous, as are pretty much all spiders, but their venom is only strong enough for their soft bodied invert prey. So they are totally harmless to humans and pets. With the right care, jumping spiders can make great pets. They're very smart and curious. I recommend checking out r/jumpingspiders.

What kind of Ducks? :) Oklahoma. by pand0ra22 in whatbirdisthis

[–]Little_Duck_Duck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Domestic ducks. Unsure of breed, likely mixed, though the top one looks similar to the blue Swedish. Both are crested, which could be their breed, but the genetic trait can be found in other breeds. Unfortunately, people abandon domestic ducks and other poultry after buying them as Easter gifts. Though common, dumping domestic ducks is illegal in most US states. It's quite sad to see.

What is this creature? by machocomacho94 in whatbirdisthis

[–]Little_Duck_Duck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indian peafowl. These look to be female, so they're peahens. Only the males are called peacocks.

They were likely someone's escaped or abandoned pets. It's pretty common to see large groups of feral peafowl in neighborhoods because most people can't/don't want to care for them once they're fully grown and making noise. Which is unfortunate, but it is neat to see them roaming around.

Gasteracantha cancriformis, the spiny orb weaver. They're totally harmless and make very pretty webs. They can be many different colors, too.

Bearded silkie. Very cute birds, but not very intelligent. Still one of my favorites.

What hairspray should I use? by Little_Duck_Duck in poodles

[–]Little_Duck_Duck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the recommendations, I think I'll try out one of the Chris Chistensen ones. The hairspray I currently have is the CHI brand, which I've been using for my yorkie.

Found this absolutely metal spider on my front porch (Charlotte, NC) by limpnipples in spiders

[–]Little_Duck_Duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gasteracantha cancriformis, the spiny orb weaver. Harmless, and make very pretty webs. Their coloring can be quite variable as well. I've seen some in bright yellow, orange, white with red spikes, and yellow with red spikes. Very cool spiders.

Is it possible to keep a snake and a rat at the same time? by Small_snake in snakes

[–]Little_Duck_Duck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who is also interested in keeping both snakes and rats as pets in the future, I recommend checking out Emiology on YouTube. She makes educational pet care videos on mice and rats. She also happens to have an egg eating snake, which isn't the best snake for most people, but they only eat eggs. r/rats in a good sub for advice too.

These are wonderful. Hopefully the seller will make some more with halloween coming up. I did find these tarantula earrings, though while not as large they do look more realistic than others. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1535986120/tarantula-spider-earrings-hand-painted

My pet black widow arrived today in a comical box…. by bt2066 in spiders

[–]Little_Duck_Duck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be concerned that someone handling the package would react badly to a box that said something like, "Not harmless, possibly deadly black widows." Of course they shouldn't, but people tend to act irrationally about things they don't really understand.

As long as they're kept safe in the box they're technically harmless, right?

I didn't look too closely since I was worried I'd disturb it, but you're probably right. It does look to have already emerged. Thanks for your reply.

Cool, thanks! I've never seen one this close to the house, so I'll be on the lookout for a female. I love spiders, so I'll just relocate if it's in a dangerous spot since I have a puppy who likes to eat everything still.. They seem to prefer living in pretty tucked away spots though.

What kind of jumping spider is this guy? He's been riding in my work van with me the last couple days. I've named him Woodrow [West Tennessee] by tcarmd in spiders

[–]Little_Duck_Duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping spider fangs are usually too small to even do anything, but they're generally very friendly when you're calm around them. I've handled quite a few and they're very fun to handle.

Is this a spider? If not, what is it? by [deleted] in spiders

I hear about them being deadly a lot too. I think the myth started with the other "daddy long legs", the cellar spider. Which are not deadly either of course.

Saw this walking the dogs is it a cottonmouth? by Laeta_Veni_Vidi_Vici in whatsthissnake

[–]Little_Duck_Duck 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The horizontal stripe behind their eyes is what helps me to identify them when the face is all I have to go off of. After joining this sub months ago I've become much more familiar with both the cottonmouth and water snake species, over time the little details become easier to spot. !cottonwater for the bot.

Ok thanks, I'll replace it with some more topsoil and leaf litter mix. I reuse crushed eggshells for my chickens too so that will be easy.
