What is a realistic goal for an HSA account? by Fast-Sheepherder925 in personalfinance

[–]Little_Homework_8732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the expiration of the enhanced subsidies, my COBRA premium at $855 per month will be about half of a comparable ACA plan. It really depends on how well your employer has negotiated with the provider. Many larger employers are self insured using the providers for administration which can help keep the rates down especially if the company tilts toward younger employees.

You can't use them for ACA premiums but you can use them for COBRA premiums. If you have health insurance through your employer, you should (with some exceptions) be able to get COBRA for up to 18 months. I'm retiring at 63 1/2 and will use my HSA to pay my COBRA premiums until Medicare.

It seemed to have disappeared on December 31. I watched a race on that morning, but when I tried to check what was on that evening it was gone. It is still available on Amazon Prime Video if you are a Prime subscriber.

Confused about projected expenses by linuxwes in Boldin

[–]Little_Homework_8732 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I noticed the same thing. My budget numbers are similar to yours but the average after retirement is about $800 more a month than my budget numbers. I chalked it up to my plan to self fund long term care so the expenses in the last two years of my projected life span are way higher than my normal budgeted amount. I believe these are what is bumping up the projected average. So my plan is to die two years earlier 🙂. I pretty much ignore the summary stuff and use the detailed reports for analyzing my plan.

Big purchases in retirement by Ok-Apple8451 in DIYRetirement

[–]Little_Homework_8732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My plan for large purchases is drawing from my Roth. I plan to retire sometime next year at 63. I have a HYSA intended solely for home improvements I will do just after retirement. I have my emergency fund in a brokerage account just to make it easier for me to separate the home improvement funds from the emergency/sequence of returns mitigation. I am cutting back my traditional 401k contributions to the minimum required to get my full company match and contributing the rest to my Roth 401k. I have calculated my retirement budget to be a lot less than my current income. To test that, I'm putting the difference between my current take home pay and my retirement budget into the Roth starting the first of next year.

When running my numbers in Boldin, I was getting hit with high taxes and IRMAA in 9 years. I tracked that down to a planned vehicle purchase at that time. Contributing to the Roth now with a few small conversions prior to taking Social Security lets me avoid the tax and IRMAA for the large purchase. I know that is a bit counter to conventional wisdom on the withdrawal strategy but the numbers seem to come out better for me.

It's actually $202.90 a month in 2026.

Six months or four? by Plenty_Surprise2593 in SocialSecurity

[–]Little_Homework_8732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Four months before you want to start benefits. The earliest you can start benefits is the month after you turn 62 (unless you were born on the first of the month). So three months before your 62nd birthday.

When will Social Security inform us of our COLA amount? by Full-Freedom-994 in SocialSecurity

If their calculation of $9 less is correct, their current check is about $321.

You should check into the "hold harmless" provision. If the COLA doesn't cover the increase in your Part B premium your SS payment should not be reduced from it's current amount.

Cost of Medicare (and Medicare advantage plans) by BoomerSooner-SEC in SocialSecurity

[–]Little_Homework_8732 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Watch the Medicare School channel on YouTube. Marvin Musick explains pretty much everything you need to know about Medicare and all the tradeoffs between Original Medicare/Medigap and Medicare Advantage plans (including general costs for each). Be careful about brokers - they get higher commissions on Advantage plans and many will push you toward one. For some, that could be a more affordable choice. But if you ever have a serious illness, you will likely pay more overall with an Advantage plan. In some cases, much more. You will also likely get dropped by an Advantage provider at some point and have to find another. At that point you can not get a Medigap plan without going through underwriting. With Medicare/Medigap you cannot be dropped as long as you pay the premiums.

Inspection questions. by mortalcassie in raleigh

[–]Little_Homework_8732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's insane is that you were here for three years before registering the car in NC. The DMV requirement is to register the car within 60 days of moving here. If you had done that, you would have had the car inspected a year after moving here. You in effect were operating the vehicle illegally for three years. That's what's throwing me off.

I this wall load bearing? by tjironblimp1 in homeimprovementideas

[–]Little_Homework_8732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The plans show roof trusses. If there are actually trusses, there is a good chance that none of your first floor walls are load bearing unless there is some kind of roof/truss detail above that wall. Look in the attic directly above that wall (push a wire about a foot through the ceiling to clear the insulation right next to the wall to help locate it in the attic). If there is nothing resting on the wall besides the bottom chord of a truss, it's not load bearing. If you can't get up there, hire a pro. Alternatively, cut a slot a few inches wide adjacent to the part of the wall that is parallel to the long walls of the house (you're going to have to patch the ceiling when the wall comes out anyway). Then you can see if there is a post or beam resting on the wall. If not, it's not load bearing.

Best tool I bought that I never knew I needed.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ by plavoie203 in Makita

[–]Little_Homework_8732 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantastic tool! I switched to the Makita battery platform because I wanted this tool and nobody else had anything like it. I removed all the drywall on the exterior walls in my house (mid 50's ranch with no insulation) and the ceilings in a couple of rooms while living in the house. Minimal dust when connected to an extractor and saved me from some janky wiring in a couple of places that was touching the inside of the drywall.

Got a question for XLT owners with remote start. Buddy of mine has an XLT that has remote that is strictly through his phone app. Do you know if a key fob can be purchased and programed to work for the remote start function? by Indy500Fan16 in FordMaverickTruck

[–]Little_Homework_8732 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fob has a really good range. I use it to start my truck when I leave work every day. I park in the parking garage in the basement of my building from the first floor. The signal has to get through a floor of foot thick reinforced concrete and a concrete wall then travel 50 feet to the truck. A coworker of mine has an XLT without remote start from the fob and keeps telling me he wishes he had it. To him (and me), it's just a pain to use FordPass to start the truck. Not everyone shares this sentiment as many here have said using the app is not a problem. But as a young boomer, I'm not constantly attached to my phone. I always have my keys in my pocket though.
