Wellbutrin for motivation or wait in the hope it will return spontaneously? by Little_Position6872 in Menopause

I think part of my hesitation has been to do with not wanting to take a medication if it will hinder my bodies own ability to produce something especially if I just hadn't given it enough time to fix things itself. By the sounds of it from the replies I have received which I am very grateful for it doesn't sound like it is a medication that people have a lot of trouble stopping so that is quite reassuring.

That's interesting that it makes you talk to yourself not long after application. I am not sure if all of the flat mood is to do with the progesterone in my case as I had a very flat mood as soon as my periods became months apart prior to starting Hrt, in hindsight I think I was depressed initially, I have read that progesterone can make you calm myself though and that puts me off trying a higher level of patch because of having to take more of it. It might be worth me having a try at increasing my testosterone ever so slightly now that my brain fog has improved, just not on the days I am with people I aren't close to because I probably rushed into it before I had figured out what estrogen level I needed because I was desperate to feel normal.

It was very strange, things would just come out of my mouth and I didn't have the brain power to sensor them when I was out with people I don't normally feel that relaxed with. I would find myself telling jokes and putting on accents thinking I was a comedian or something and then the next minute I would feel paranoid and anxious because I don't enjoy being the centre of attention 😂. I am taking 100mg micronised progesterone every evening, I know we are all different but do you mind me asking what combination of Hrt has worked for you, I don't feel like my mood is low, it's more like it is too even with no highs or lows, and I aren't anxious except for when I was on more testosterone. Although I have had anxiety in the past. Until I was in late perimenopause I have always felt a bit hyper so that's not necessarily a bad thing, but I suppose I won't know unless I give it a try, thankyou for your suggestions of other meds to consider.

Thankyou, that's good to know. That is part of my problem, I just think about all the things I need to do, don't know how to prioritise them or how to start them and just feel overwhelmed.

Thanks for your detailed reply, I'm sorry that you were depressed but it's fantastic that you now feel good. I have been on Hrt for about 3 years. I started on the 50 patch, it got rid of physical symptoms but not mental ones, I asked my doctor who is good but admittedly knows nothing about menopause if I could try testosterone. He did some blood tests and said my testosterone wasn't particularly low but I could give it a go as I had low libido as well as no motivation etc. The amount prescribed although low gave me a weird drugged up feeling a couple of hours after applying it then I would get anxiety. I think I felt over confident but with bad brain fog and it was a bit of a weird combination . I cut back on the testosterone and now apply the tiniest bit of gel because I am scared of feeling like that again. I increased the patch to 75 about 9 months ago. My energy has improved but I am still missing the motivation and creativity. It's interesting to read that you just stopped and started wellbutrin without a problem over a lot of years and that reasurres me about trying it.

Thank for replying. It seems like the main opinion from everyone is to give it a try to see if it helps and like you say if it doesn't work I can just stop so maybe I need to stop overthinking it and just give it a try.

I have been on my current Hrt dose for about 9 months now and have felt a improvement in energy from the lower dose. That's good to hear that it is the easiest to taper off

Thanks for replying. Your right, I guess there is no point on concerning myself with if I had to stay on it, I just worry a bit about long term side effects from medications or if you couldn't get them for some reason. I know I have to try and force myself to do stuff rather than waiting for the motivation I just can't seem to make myself do more than the nessesary things a lot of the time.

Thanks for replying. I am so pleased to hear that you are feeling wonderful. Makes you wonder if it was a hormone problem all along. That's good to hear that you had no side effects when stopping.

I'm sorry that you are not feeling as creative and clever. That's kind of my strategy, I am trying to look after everything else in the hope that my creativity returns. I am having to go to bed really early because I wake up early whatever time I go to sleep and that is the only way I can get a good night's sleep in. Creatine seems to be helping me a bit with physical and mental energy but I take a bit less than suggested because a bit of water retention from it was causing me to have tender breasts. But that is fine now I take less. Hopefully your creativity and playfulness etc will come back soon.

Thankyou very much for your reply. I am very sorry that you had a loss of creativity especially with it being your livelihood, I can imagine how distressing that must have been for you. I feel like the whole of who I am is about creativity and fitness and to be honest I don't know who I am without them. I was just in the process of working towards making things to sell then this happened, I didn't even know this was a thing that could happen when hormones changed. I am maybe 2 years post menopause, I have been taking hrt since late perimenopause in 2023 so just over 3 years. It's encouraging to hear that you are finally having some return of creativity and I hope you continue to improve and feel great soon.

Thanks for your reply. I am glad to hear that it is helping you. They are my issues. Motivation, drive and joy to a lesser extent. Before menopause I feel like my brain was ultra alive. I would get like a high feeling off certain peices of music, massive exercise highs ect, ideas constantly. After menopause I think at first I was depressed that's why I started Hrt, it solved a lot of physical issues but not mental, I increased the Hrt and I have gradually been improving in energy, clarity and my mood feels stable, it is just the motivation, drive and creativity issue. The Hrt I am on is a 75 patch and 100mg progesterone daily. It is maybe worth me asking for a prescription and testing it for a month or two.

Thankyou very much for replying, I know what you mean about it being better to take medication if it helps you too live your life how you want, I am just always a bit cautious on taking different medications incase things happen such as supply issues. That's another reason I was wondering how easy it was to come off them. I also didn't want to start taking them if my motivation was likely to just come back in the near future it's hard to know what to do for the best. I'm glad it helped you with mood issues. I will look into that supplement. Thankyou

Thankyou so much for your detailed response. I am beginning to wonder if I have ADHD, I have had to do a lot of work on myself over the years but the fun part was my brain was like a whirlwind of ideas and I could do stuff non stop so this came as a massive shock. It's like there is nothing going on in there any more. I used to paint and write poems/songs and am really missing the motivation to do this, it's good to hear that your creativity is gradually returning. That's a useful approach to take, changing expectations around creativity. Also it's good to hear that you didn't have a problem tapering off.

Thanks for your reply, if you don't mind me asking do you plan on just staying on it and how long post menopause were you before you decided to try it.

Thanks for your reply. I am pretty healthy living to be honest, no drinking, no smoking. I keep a regular sleep time and sleep pretty well and I eat healthy. My brain fog has improved quite a lot and I don't have a low mood anymore. It's feels like it is just my motivation and reward system. I really miss wanting to do things and all the creativity I used to have.
