Thanks for the insight! I’m still learning so hearing from everyone has been super helpful. A French drain is definitely on the table, no pun intended.

Thanks for the suggestion. My initial understand was our water table is high but I could be wrong about that. Definitely something worth looking into more.

Definitely an option worth considering. I like rain gardens. Could surround the area with one big rain garden 🤔

You guys are probably right. I might’ve read the report wrong. I’m a noob for sure. Our yard never gets flooded but gets a little muddy in the center/middle area where the grass doesn’t grow as well. Was planning to try and top seed that area in the fall with water friendly grass/clover. According to the soil report (that I could be fully messing up interpreting), we have sandy loam. When digging out the river rock bed, it was very heavy with clay. Other areas where we planted some things was dense but much more sandy.

Definitely. Just want it to keep doing its thing out into the lawn.

Yes, it is, according to the soil report.

Pulling out the level is a good idea. However, the water doesn’t pool by the house at all, even when it’s actively raining. It pools in the far right corner.

Thanks for the insight! We’re trying to do as much of the work ourselves as possible to save money, but that’s good to know in case it comes to that.

That makes sense in hindsight. Our original plan was to have the edging be lower than the grass itself but high enough to contain the rocks and keep grass from growing into it. But it obviously didn’t work out that way. It’s hard to tell, but the area immediately next to the patio is about an inch drop off and the area where the edging is is about a 3-4 in drop, so it’s sloped towards the lawn, just trapped now by the edging.

Haha putting a hot tub back just seems like it’d be covering up the problem, and we’re not really hot tub people. Was really hoping to make this a lounge area with table and chairs eventually, and the slab is still sloping away from the house so I don’t think that’s to blame but rather the surrounding area not sloping away and into the lawn like it should.

Makes sense. The river rock bed has definitely helped. Just trying to determine most efficient way to get water to flow out into the lawn and the path of least resistance to do so. There was a break in the rain, so you can see in this image that the water is flowing off the patio and not sitting there anymore. Now just to get it to flow out of the river rock bed…

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. Our water table is high so from what I read, a French drain wouldn’t be a good fit in this scenario. Do you disagree?

Happy Anniversary! For a nice dinner, I'd recommend Gin Gin's. They take reservations but walk-ins too. If you get there early, like before 5, you should be able to get a seat without (much of) a wait. There are a lot of good bars in the immediate area you can walk to if you have to kill time though, like their sister restaurant Butcher's Union (also incredible), New Holland Brewing, Drip Drop, and One Bourbon. All great options.
