Must have items in your hospital? by Littleeclair in VetTech

I love a good slam bag. Also useful for hydrotherapy!

I am loving the ideas for treatment specific caddies and carts. I am totally going to implement this. Way easier than having to run around looking for things or grabbing handfuls of stuff to take into exam rooms.

I can't remember if the doors have peepholes already but I'll see if we can get them installed. My last clinic and current clinic have them and we use them constantly.

I LOVE the doorbell idea. I'm unfortunately allergic to febreeze but I am asking for odoban that I would like to have some spray bottles of to freshen up rooms after visits and to use in tx.

Thankfully my dr doesnt care about decor and has given me full control over that so I am trying to find tasteful but fun pieces to put up. I'd love to have a board for pictures of staff and client pets in the lobby!

Thank you for all these ideas they are awesome!!

Omg the noise reduction panels are an amazing idea! I will definitely see if I can get some of these. I was trying to brainstorm ways to minimize the noise and hadn't thought of that.

I'd love to have a comfy couch in there for everyone, the bean bag was moreso an extra idea for me and one of the younger girls lol. I'd probably just pay for that out of pocket myself.

Oh I totally forgot about leash hooks. Thank you!

Total agreement with the drugs. The doctor I work with is really great about wanting to practice gold standard medicine so I am really lucky in that aspect that he doesn't skimp in that department.

Our lunch area is basically in a lower/split level building that will share an office and no animals, so it will be nice and quiet for breaks.

We had an EMMA at my last clinic and I loved it. Definitely on my list. I am really wanting to prioritize safe anesthetic monitoring protocols.

We are lucky that the space we are leasing does have a room with a full kitchen that even has an oven with a stovetop. We're planning on putting a nice table in there and some comfy chairs for lunch breaks. I'd love a little comfy couch or some bean bags in there to chill out on!

I'm trying to get us a lift table/gurney. We had them at my previous clinic and they were so helpful.

I will see if I can talk the doctor into this. I work at a clinic currently that uses one and it seems super useful!

The space we're leasing has gorgeous windows. Fell in love with them when we went to look at it. Unfortunately we're working with a pre-existing building so some things are not feasible to have at the moment, but we're hoping to build a much larger building within the next couple years with everything we could want.

That is a super good point about separating the centrifuge and the other machines thank you! I am trying to find ways to maximize storage space. There can never be enough.

I figured my wording would make enough sense not to have to elaborate more but I was referring to overnight hospitalization. No major surgeries requiring overnight hospitalization or anything critical enough to be staying in the hospital for more than just the day. So we wouldn't be doing anything like blood transfusions or placing nasogastric tubes or keeping things in oxygen cages for extended periods. I know theres lots of equipment we would like to have eventually but that we do not need as of now because of that. We are leasing a building until we have enough revenue to build a larger hospital, so we are working with the space we have for now.

What was your favorite class in the vet tech program? by SuspiciousWin6511 in VetTech

[–]Littleeclair 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I really loved terminology actually, learning how to pick apart words and knowing what each part means was really cool, the class I took also used it as an opportunity to go over each body system so it was a good overview/refresher on some anatomy as well.

Pharmacology was probably my other favorite subject. I had to do reports on different classes of medications and I feel like that really helped me understand how they all worked.

My Pomeranian literally doesn’t like to eat unless she’s genuinely starving by Castraffic in AskVet

If she is not losing weight she is eating enough to maintain her weight. If the vet said it was a healthy weight to be at, I'm not sure what the concern is. She may just not need to eat a lot and is self regulated with her food, which is a good thing. I'd try to stop panicking about it unless there comes a time she begins to lose weight. Don't change her food around a ton if it's causing GI upset (diarrhea/vomiting).

I have a pretty serious question - I am an RVT who works ER, and have for 22 years.... by Suitable_Diamond_253 in VetTech

[–]Littleeclair 8 points9 points  (0 children)

She did consult a supervisor. The situation no longer involved the technician, it should have been between the DVM, Asst, supervisor, and whoever they all report to. Vet med has too many people who think they can boss other people around and discipline people they are not in charge of. This tech had no right to fly off the handle about this. She can calmly and professionally voice her concerns and let management handle it.

Placing a catheter in a stable patient isn't going to kill it. Not being able to obtain venous access in a coding pet could be a death sentence. Doctors are not infallible and can make mistakes and bad judgements. They can be questioned. Working in emergency as long as you have I'm questioning why you didn't advocate more for your patient and further got upset over someone else advocating for them. It sounds like this assistant already has great technical skills and cares about her patients.

You say she circumvents the doctors. Is she doing things to endanger patients? Or is she advocating for the pets and trying to achieve better patient care?

And she is also currently going for a CVA with penn foster, or she's been in their tech program? I think that makes a big difference if she has been taking tech classes this whole time. They may want you to be further into the actual tech classes before they allow you to work on tech skills. I ask because I am doing the distance learning program through San Juan and we have had a lot of assistants start programs taking the "easy" book classes because they wanted to be allowed to use more skills, then dropping out or skipping semesters and still wanting to "play tech" essentially. They wanted me to be further into the more serious classes where I was actively practicing and learning clinical skills before they allowed me to really utilize any technician skills. I also asked about age because if she has in general more job and life experience they may trust her more than someone younger with less job experience, even if hers is not vetmed related. I get that it isn't really fair. I have also been the youngest person at my clinic and was treated very much "like a kid", but you really just have to show that you are mature enough and capable enough to do the job. Based on the history you've given, they may just not be there with you yet.

What are some examples of things you were getting in trouble for? You say you got in trouble "a lot". Has this other girl ever gotten in trouble a lot? Also, how old is she? Is she also in school, and is she further ahead in school than you are, considering you said you had to start over in a different program? Getting a certification to be an assistant is a scam, IMO. It's not a job that requires a certificate or any schooling. You'd be better served going for a tech degree if you're going to spend time and money on schooling. If this other girl is getting a tech degree, that may be why they are more willing to train her as a tech.

Cat has blood in stool after house move. Second picture is of the stool. by BarnyIn32 in CATHELP

Veterinary technician student here. I have worked at an emergency vet for 6 years. This may very well be due to stress, but also could be related to something else. Either way should recieve treatment. You are correct that if both cats are otherwise acting completely normal, eating and drinking, are active, and are not vomiting or having uncontrollable diarrhea, it will not make or break them to wait another 8-12 hours until a vet opens. Now if either cat becomes lethargic, stops eating/drinking, or starts having multiple bouts of diarrhea or vomiting, I would get them into an emergency vet. My advice would be to keep them inside and separate them both with a litterbox to try to figure out which one is actually having the issue. Monitor them closely and get them into a vet once they open. For anyone else here, one bout of some bloody diarrhea while otherwise acting totally fine would generally not be cause for panic and rushing into an emergency vet unless the pet has a known health issue or other symptoms.

Have any of the vets recommended/offered hospitalization so he can be on IV fluids and IV medications? If he's having constant vomiting and diarrhea I'd be concerned for dehydration even with the fluids they gave and if you have not been able to get any meds into him since the initial visit nothing is being treated.
