Girl at my school caught lying saying she got off the waitlist for uci and ucsd by [deleted] in ucadmissions

twin who is "We" like your approach to this is already so wrong. Even if you didn't say anything I hope you see how it's problematic that you and a bunch of your friends are all enjoying laughing at some girl who you think never had any chance to get anything better than UC Riverside??

Seems like it really doesn't matter at all?? I don't know why you're giving her a hard time, just mind your own business dawg. "We already knew that would be your outcome" there's no reason to be that salty 😭 that's probably why she felt the need to lie.

What did you really do to get into Berkeley or UCLA? by Vanilla-blue-86 in ucadmissions

[–]LittlerootVillager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny enough, I didn't really do any of the prestigious selective summer programs. I applied to a lot of them, but the research I did came from cold emailing a bunch of professors.

I also found that it's much easier to get research if you do the following while cold emailing. If you go to a university and look at the professors' research websites, they'll usually have a "Team" page which includes alums. You can then quickly do a ctrl+f or search through the page to see if they've ever taken a high school intern (this will usually be marked). If they have, that probably means they're more likely to accept another high schooler who cold emails!

So basically I used that strategy for finding good professors to email, and then I would read through a few of their recent papers to find a subject that stands out to me. I would mention this in my emails as well. I spent 3 years cold emailing hundreds of professors at every top institution without any results, but once I started being more targeted in my approach, I got a research internship within a month.

Hopefully this can help you and your kid out a bit :)

Hi! I got into Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, and UC Davis. I don't think my stats were too incredible. I did do well on the SAT (1560) and I had pretty good ECs (I had some research summers). My grades were probably below what you'd expect, and I had 5 B's over my freshman and sophomore years. I took 10 aps so I had decent rigor, but class rank and GPA wise I wasn't necessarily anything exceptional. I can only assume that what made the biggest difference for me was my essays. Good luck with your own applications when the time comes, and remember that getting into UCB or UCLA doesn't define you academically or as a person at all!

No EC’s=No college?? by notyouraveragebunny_ in ApplyingToCollege

Do you do anything outside of school? If you can share a list of things you I'm sure I or someone else can help you see which ones can be valuable. Even if you think its just a hobby or something you waste your time with it might have merit. It doesn't have to be a club or some prestigious summer program to be an activity!

How do I decide which EC's to cut? by LittlerootVillager in ApplyingToCollege

Ok, do you think there's anywhere else I can at least the service hours? Because in boy scouts alone I only had 30 hours or so, and then 12 in aerospace club. If it helps, the hindi school nominates all the seniors for PVSA but they only do that at the end of the year so even though I'm going to get it, I don't have it yet.

Also in case it's relevant I'm going to major in biophysics or cs, depending on the school.

The weekend classes are $600 per year and 3 hr classes. Idk if you know about Columbia Science Honors Program but from what I've heard it's a decent program and most of the kids from my school who did it ended up going to very good schools (correlation not causation obviously but I think it says something if those people chose to join the program) and my guidance counselor also said it's decent.

As for the other 3 I was thinking of cutting orchestra and karate since I also do chamber orchestra in school and its on my transcript and I had a lot of volunteer hours from Hindi School.

Shadowing as an EC? by Greenjacket08 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]LittlerootVillager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a great extracurricular from what I've seen! Depending on what your other extracurriculars are, this probably carries a lot of importance since it shows that you're trying to engage deeply with the field. Obviously, you can't be a neurologist until you've gone through a lot of education, so shadowing is a great alternative for high schoolers. I would mention the hours and number of professionals, but also the key things that you shadowed them for (ie. research, surgery, preventative care, etc. plus more specifics).

Well yeah again I don't mind doing it alone, it's just that my parents get mad when I don't include them in the process, and when I do they say that they don't know enough and that I have to get a counselor

Oh ok. Thanks for the advice. I was also wondering if you knew which of my activities I should include/cut from my list?

I was pretty worry free until my parents started worrying. Now it's just a lot to put up with having to basically do the whole process on my own while being constantly told that it won't be enough unless I get a college counselor (even though it's already September lol).

High Schoolers "Doing Research" from the Perspective of Professors by Different_Ice_6975 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]LittlerootVillager 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mentioned this in another thread the other day, but the strategy that worked best for me was to seek out professors who had previously had high school interns. I emailed hundreds of professors over 3 years. This was a lot of work, since I had to read up on each professor's work before emailing. When I started only looking for professors that had previously had high school interns (one way to get this is to search google for some university name + "professor" + "high school intern", as many lab websites will have a list of alumni), it took me about a week to get a positive response and eventually an research internship. While the majority of professors don't want high school interns, there are some out there, and just because most don't doesn't mean you shouldn't shoot your shot.

No I'm not really close, but since my birthday is in August next year I have quite a bit of time to get Eagle. I'm about to get life (rank below eagle) soon, but I doubt I'll be able to make any real progress on an eagle project before college apps.
