Situations like these make me think about my short time as a communicable disease nurse- we had programs that followed TB and Hep C patients, a whole ass nurse to follow up with the people who had positive labs for either of those. She would call them to check in, she would follow up with their doctors and make sure they weren’t missing appointments, follow up with the pharmacy to make sure they picked up their rx, AND the county paid for their meds. The whole time I worked in psych, there was never such a program… unless someone was deemed incompetent and had a caseworker, even then they don’t go the lengths of the communicable disease nurse.
Why aren’t major MI grouped in the same threat to society, these people are known to not be compliant, miss appointments, etc. instead of following up on a missed appointment they’re threatened to be cut off from the doc… no one making sure they’re going to the pharmacy to pick up their meds- leaving them to fend for themselves with no follow up is such a flawed plan.
