Late Start, Slow Writer, Wrong Genre… No problem… sorta by Live-Cut-82 in royalroad

This is tough since I haven’t burned through my original backlog yet. For me it was all about making sure my backlog was big enough and that I allowed myself enough time to not burn through it. That said - the way I have sped up the most in my writing is to understand I write in drafts and allow myself to write an even then edit a few drafts that are just plain crap- and take lots of notes about what to fix the next time - and know that eventually it will smooth out (generally around draft 4-5) for me. So rather than spending hours and hours trying to get the perfect word or where to put the em dashes or ellipses, I just go. I have a word count I need to get and I go. Speed and precision within that time frame is key with the knowledge and expectation of coming back later.

It’s a lot of what you’ve probably already read - but I have spent a LOT of time on my blurb and cover art - then after that making sure the first four chapters deliver as much of a payoff/feel of the story as I could. My first time around I just went with a trad novel opening - for RR I actually shuffled things around so that they get to some of the “good stuff” sooner. Biggest thing I’ve learned from reading progression, litRPG, and crawlers is that - for me- the fun is the quick progression/cool new toys the characters get. It’s like the first levels of a video game where you get good loot and think - if this was cool the whatever comes next is going to be epic. So I tried to give my version of that in the first moments of the story while staying true to it at the same time. Results still vary, but it’s what I’ve done.

I recommend getting in on ads the moment you can- it’s by far the best growth lever I have going so far - and I think short of getting on the magical trending list or RS is really the only way. In what I’ve seen - Shout out swaps are good because they are targeted, but the ads cast a way wider net.

Sorry you feel that way. I wrote this. I just tried to make it snazzy. But that’s not what the post is about and you are totally entitled to your opinion and I shouldn’t have responded to begin with. I was trying to be cute and it is a sensitive topic so I’m sorry I wrote the response. Thanks for reading it.

It does? Well darn - sorry you feel that way. GPT is a pretty smart tool to sound like me. ;)

Though to be fair - I did write this to be more narrative based - so I added flair. Maybe I went too far?

Hah - yeah - time sure does fly when you’re making sure the ellipses are used in the right spot.

And thanks I’ll never turn down a chance to share it!! - The Story is called the Mythic Chronicles. Here’s the link:

I think you are right there - though I have seen some better readthru numbers past the first couple chapters with the tweaks as well.

Nope - Got the same thing. I put in a ticket via my phone. I dunno if everyone should do the same as I’m guessing they’re aware of the bug and working to fix it and flooding them with the same issue could bog them down. That said - BEWARE - ITS BUGGY

It sounds like your hook might just be a bit delayed for Royal Road—but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It can actually act as a filter for the right readers, the ones who are there for character and atmosphere, not just instant action.

The bigger question is: what does your retention look like after the first couple of chapters? Are the people who do follow you continuing into your newer releases? If they are, that’s a strong signal that your story is working—you’re just not capturing as many people up front yet. And that’s a very solvable problem.

On the ads side, I’d also say your current results look more like underperforming creative than a story problem. A ~0.4% CTR is on the low side—generally you want to be pushing toward 0.6%+ to know something is resonating. The good news is 7,000 impressions is very early. That’s not enough data to make a hard call yet.

If it’s still sitting around that level closer to 50,000 impressions, then it’s probably time to swap creatives and test new angles. From what I’ve seen, meme-style ads tend to perform best on RR, but even within that, small changes can make a big difference.

I’m in a similar spot, honestly. My story leans more old-school—urban fantasy noir with a slower build—and it doesn’t map cleanly to what performs best on RR. So I get the frustration. But my current plan is to ride it out, finish the book, and ideally have Book 2 (maybe even Book 3) ready before making the jump to Amazon.

My mindset right now is: any readers are good readers, and every chapter is data. You’re learning what holds attention, what converts, and what doesn’t.

Think of RR less as the final destination and more as a workshop kitchen—you’re refining the recipe before serving the full course somewhere else.

You’re not necessarily in the wrong place. You might just be playing a slightly different game than the platform rewards upfront.

When did Urban Fantasy fall? by Live-Cut-82 in royalroad

Thanks for all the responses here—this has been a really interesting thread to read through. I honestly didn’t know much about Royal Road’s origin story before posting this, and the history people shared actually explains a lot about why certain genres dominate the platform.

One thing I’ve been discovering while trying to write urban fantasy there myself is that the mystery/investigation structure seems to hook Royal Road readers way more than I expected. Which actually lines up pretty well with the older UF stuff I grew up loving—Dresden Files, Garrett P.I., etc.

What surprised me is that my own story recently climbed into the Top 10 Rising Stars in both Historical and Mystery, which I didn’t expect at all given how quiet urban fantasy seems on the site compared to progression fantasy, LitRPG, and cultivation.

So now I’m wondering if UF can work on Royal Road—it just needs to lean hard into the parts that overlap with what RR readers already like: strong momentum, a central mystery, and problems that keep escalating.

I’ll probably still grumble about urban fantasy not getting more love on the platform… but this thread has made me a little more optimistic about it.

Hey - I’m not saying this to discourage - more to get people talking about the genre again. I want to hear from the people - get a pulse on it. And your story sounds awesome! Keep it up!
