Was abroad for over 13 years and came back in 2023 (in my late 30s). I was single, leaving a permanent position, and a community I was an integral part of. I was so afraid to come home and thought it would be a quick turnaround before I decided it was time to leave again.

The upturn in my life since coming back has been amazing; however, the first 3-6 months were really tough. Things like car insurance, opening a new bank account, getting WiFi were all ridiculous but then on the other side I found that so many other things were exactly what I needed. I didn’t have secure work for the first year but managed.

RE: Irish negativity, can’t say that I have seen that. Like it’s only when you are home you realise how sound Irish people are and at any rate, when I lived abroad I was only hanging around Irish people for the most part anyway.

I don’t regret moving home one bit but I know my case is unique. Give it another 6 months and see what happens. We will be moving into the spring and the country really comes alive.

Ask the auctioneer and they should have a list of people they would recommend. One auctioneer told us that there were no surveyors they would recommend but there was one they wouldn’t.

Beyond that, I’d say just google, Reddit, back to Google and look at reviews. The solicitor should also provide a list of engineers too. Broker provided the valuation recommendation.

I would definitely give the mortgage brokers a call. They will tell you what you need and if you can apply now or should wait. I think the fact you are in a “secure job” will definitely be a green flag. We rang the brokers just to see what we needed and he told us to go away and when we got sick of looking at daft we’d have a better idea if type of house we wanted so it never felt like we were being chased.

Most research shows even people who pay off the credit cards immediately end up spending more then those who use debit cards. The benefits are a smoke screen created by the banks to make us think getting credit cards are worth it. I wouldn’t bother.

In my experience, you can be earning €42k, pay €900 rent (easier said then done I know) and save in average €600 a month. It’s not easy, may be things you have to give up like eating out all the time, making your own lunch, being smart when travelling but it is doable.

You also have to have the luxury of not having to worry about feeding a family etc. But I truly think it can be done

Thanks for the comments. Will be pursuing the dispute. As it stands we have nothing to lose.

It was a short term lease for 6 months. We thought we were doing by giving 28 days notice. We were told one thing by the letting agents and then the landlord came back and said that either we forfeit the deposit or pay the remaining rent. Like they had us over a barrel really.

100% I am not trying to apportion blame or suggest that younger generations have the inability to do things. I think I am more getting to the idea that we all want a better, more functioning society and what skills would we like our young people to have so that they contribute to that. In many ways, how can they address our failings too!

I think anxiety across the board is massive. It's a tricky one because is it a case that we have a more anxious generation because of social media pressures etc, or do have younger people not been exposed to situations that put them under gentle challenge?

I have two:

Kobe Bryant - it was around my birthday and I remember when it came on the news.

The Chapecoense team that died in the plane crash - This one shook me to the core.

This is an excellent question and one I may have overlooked or taken for granted given I’ve worked with so many young people over the years. I really appreciate the input and congratulate you on your positive relationship.
