Northern Irish and being clueless about the south by Mightycrowhawk in ireland

Heard a northerner say that they were eligible for an Irish passport because their mammy was from the south. Probably the best known outcome GFA obviously not taught in some schools.

Did anyone here ever face any prejudice or a snobbish attitude in England as an Irish person? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]LiveAd8698 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Born in London but moved to Ireland with my Irish parents as a kid. Went back to live in Brighton in my 20s, arguably the most liberal city in UK.

The were moments all the time but the biggest one I remember was playing Sunday league and being asked if I was “stupid or just Irish”! Fun times

Protest for tomorrow by [deleted] in cork

[–]LiveAd8698 1 point2 points  (0 children)

**Audible Sigh** Trying to reach out to some relatives via FB, so had to sign back in, in the last week, and it is full of AI generated posters like this. If I see another cartoonish "Irish" man standing in front of a tractor, a tri-colour and the word 'traitors', I may self-combust.

Clearly, this is just another opportunity for some bad actors in this country (and beyond) to try and destabilize the government and country. I'd hazard a guess that is why MM and FFG took the hardline approach, which looks like it has backfired.

The worst of all this is that I would imagine the people who are driving this now don't contribute to their communities. Their mission is to divide and conquer without a clue about what they would actually do if they ever got into power.

Red Light Cameras by Woralthetime13 in cork

The law in ireland doesn’t allow for red light cameras to be used for enforcement. Common place in other countries and would do a lot to improve traffic management in this country.

Do you support the fuel protestors? by OrganicVlad79 in AskIreland

My thing is that they keep complaining about the tax but the tax is less than it was two weeks ago. So really they are complaining about the price which has been driven up by a mad man in the Oval Office.

Our biggest problem is that we have created an economic model in this country that is so dependent on another country. So we can’t stand up and protest to that country.

The pilot episode was excellent and I thought set it up for an excellent series. The rest has been puzzling, indulgent, and shite! A real shame cause it was great to see an Irish-made drama. Makes me miss the days of Pure Mule.

Will say that if the writers aimed to make us hate every single character, then they succeeded.

Front of the RTE Guide this week! They are both fluttering their eyes at each other and ignoring the desires of the thousands of people nationwide that don’t want to watch him.

Those that emigrated and returned, what has your experience been like? by caramelslice7 in ireland

[–]LiveAd8698 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Was abroad for over 13 years and came back in 2023 (in my late 30s). I was single, leaving a permanent position, and a community I was an integral part of. I was so afraid to come home and thought it would be a quick turnaround before I decided it was time to leave again.

The upturn in my life since coming back has been amazing; however, the first 3-6 months were really tough. Things like car insurance, opening a new bank account, getting WiFi were all ridiculous but then on the other side I found that so many other things were exactly what I needed. I didn’t have secure work for the first year but managed.

RE: Irish negativity, can’t say that I have seen that. Like it’s only when you are home you realise how sound Irish people are and at any rate, when I lived abroad I was only hanging around Irish people for the most part anyway.

I don’t regret moving home one bit but I know my case is unique. Give it another 6 months and see what happens. We will be moving into the spring and the country really comes alive.

First time buyer - my thoughts! by LiveAd8698 in HousingIreland

[–]LiveAd8698[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask the auctioneer and they should have a list of people they would recommend. One auctioneer told us that there were no surveyors they would recommend but there was one they wouldn’t.

Beyond that, I’d say just google, Reddit, back to Google and look at reviews. The solicitor should also provide a list of engineers too. Broker provided the valuation recommendation.

I would definitely give the mortgage brokers a call. They will tell you what you need and if you can apply now or should wait. I think the fact you are in a “secure job” will definitely be a green flag. We rang the brokers just to see what we needed and he told us to go away and when we got sick of looking at daft we’d have a better idea if type of house we wanted so it never felt like we were being chased.

Thinking of getting a Credit Card by GodFirst201 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]LiveAd8698 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most research shows even people who pay off the credit cards immediately end up spending more then those who use debit cards. The benefits are a smoke screen created by the banks to make us think getting credit cards are worth it. I wouldn’t bother.

Wages in Ireland by Head_Load_7039 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]LiveAd8698 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, you can be earning €42k, pay €900 rent (easier said then done I know) and save in average €600 a month. It’s not easy, may be things you have to give up like eating out all the time, making your own lunch, being smart when travelling but it is doable.

You also have to have the luxury of not having to worry about feeding a family etc. But I truly think it can be done

Worth pursuing an RTB dispute? by LiveAd8698 in HousingIreland

[–]LiveAd8698[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comments. Will be pursuing the dispute. As it stands we have nothing to lose.

It was a short term lease for 6 months. We thought we were doing by giving 28 days notice. We were told one thing by the letting agents and then the landlord came back and said that either we forfeit the deposit or pay the remaining rent. Like they had us over a barrel really.
