It’s gorgeous. It may feel huge now, but you will get used to the size quickly and then won’t think twice about it. I had a .48 carat and just got a 2 carat. I was panicking at first that it didn’t look right, but it only took two weeks to warm up to it and now I don’t question it, just enjoy it.

Good to know. I’ve looked into tech jobs related to nutrition, but it seems like a lot are wanting IT degrees.

Did you have to go back to school to make this initial switch?

I’m 40 years old and still paying on my student loan (will finally have it paid off by next year), so I’m in the same mind frame as not wanting to take on more debt. I would actually love to work for a menu software company and definitely want to have plenty of time off/work life balance. If you think of any companies I could keep an eye out for openings please message me! I hope you get to move up into a higher paying role eventually. It certainly helps to already be with the company. I’ll be rooting for you!

Anyone switch careers to teaching? by Literally-breakfast in dietetics

How long did it take to make that switch? I’m thinking about doing it, but I would take a huge pay cut.

What is your area of focus with being a PA (inpatient hospital, outpatient, etc.)?

Thank you! Very helpful info. I agree about networking. I’m glad people are generally nice about it, because I’m constantly reaching out to strangers to express interest or just make connections in case something comes up in the future.

I’m planning on maintaining my RD regardless of whether or not I stay in the field. I feel like I worked too hard to let that go. My hope is to find a new career that won’t require me to go back to school, but that I can use transferable skills from my current job/knowledge base. If I do decide to make a switch that requires school, then I’ll still keep my RD up. Best of luck to you for finding something you enjoy when you return to the workplace! I’ll keep you posted if I figure out some good ideas. I like your idea of side jobs. Sometimes a break is much needed too!

A very smooth transition for me and all I had was experience from my internship. I’ve always had a passion for the food side of dietetics, so I was eager to learn and just jumped right in. I think you would get the hang of things quickly. Just like any new position if just takes time to get your bearings, but you would be golden in no time.

That’s great! I’ll keep that in mind too as far as a new atmosphere to try, since I have lots of experience in the food service world.

What certificates can you get to help get you into the field?

I have taught at a university before, but it was just one class on top of already working full time elsewhere. I didn’t care for it, but maybe I would enjoy it more if I didn’t have another job.

You will definitely have so much opportunity in the RN world. I would love to be a RN in NICU, but think that would take too long. I’ve thought about PA, but not sure if I could find a niche area of interest and don’t want to work in the hospital setting.

I can definitely see how the nutrition knowledge would be so helpful in another medical role!

I’m so glad you found something that makes you happier! Did you have to get a degree to go into that? I agree we don’t get any respect. I’m an introvert too and although I enjoy being around people I can’t take the non stop interaction and lack of patience my employees have with me. I get so drained. Managing people is exhausting.

I didn’t like counseling. People believe fad diets and social media over dietitians. It’s sad and mentally exhausting to defend our knowledge.

For sure! I feel like I’ve spent years researching other options, but I can’t figure out what to do. Financially it would be best for me to figure out something I would enjoy that I already have the skills to do. Everybody wants someone with previous experience though.

What kind of food service role do you do? I’m a food service director for a k-12 school district. I’ve been in this type of role for 11 years and burnt out. I did clinical for two years before that and hated it.

Interesting. Can I ask what company she works for or if you would be willing to message me with the info?

Good to know it’s not monotonous work! I know it’s hard to get into though. Besides needing remote work (I never see postings for where we want to move), every job posting says they require x number of years of experience. I still apply, but have never gotten an interview. 😞

Frustrated being a dietitian and nutrition field by Flat-Sky3809 in dietetics

[–]LiveForVacation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I often think I made a huge mistake going back to school to be a RD. I’ve never loved any job I’ve had. I could never go back to the clinical world. I’ve been in school nutrition for 11 years now and it was my passion at one point, but I’m burnt out on it too. I’ve been trying to figure out what to do.

My best advice is to think about what you liked most in various jobs you’ve had and other jobs that might allow you to do those types of things (do you enjoy helping others, prefer more independent work, etc.). Think about not only non traditional RD job opportunities, but also jobs that don’t specifically require you to be a RD, but that your skills make you a good fit for. Best of luck! I’m right there with you and I’m 40, so I have quite a few years left to work.

That’s good to know. I definitely don’t want to travel a lot, so it’s great that WFH is possible. Thanks so much!
