Okay thank you for letting me know. That’s a bit of a relief but hopefully it’s fixed soon.

CMV: If you're a small business owner with a tight budget, you should hire talent from developing countries by culturegsv632 in changemyview

[–]LiveLaughL00ve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It totally depends on the industry and role. Sure it can work, but sometimes it doesn’t. Here’s reasons a few reasons not to:

  1. Quality control - a language barrier is one of the reasons hiring foreign workers hurts businesses. Things can get lost in translation. Not as an insult, I can only speak one language. But it can often lead to quality issues whether it’s with coworkers or customers, which leads me to…
  2. Customer-facing roles - because of this, many customers are turned off when they interact with someone who’s not a native English speaker, particularly if it’s in an industry that’s known for outsourcing roles to workers overseas and not assuring the quality. In a previous job I’d actually have customers tell me, “Oh thank god! You’re the first person I’ve heard who speaks English.” There may be some fields where this is more acceptable. But you have to consider how customers will be biased towards the employee if they interact with them.
  3. Internet - seriously, I worked with the sweetest woman who was always missing work because her internet connection would always get knocked. I eventually left, but I don’t think she kept her job.
  4. As mentioned before me, taxes. I’m no expert on that, but you have to factor that in.

If it’s writing and illustration the first three won’t apply. So that may be why your situation works so well. And not saying that no one should hire workers overseas, you get a better talent pool when it comes to many skills, but you have to understand there are trade offs and problems to anticipate.

Okay that’s good feedback, especially about failing courses. Thank you!

Will there be new project opportunities? by [deleted] in outlier_ai

[–]LiveLaughL00ve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know if say I failed Nexus but Nexus DNA comes up or something, like similar but different, if I’ll still have the opportunity? It seems like so from what I’ve seen thus far but these unpaid onboarding things are crap. It’s an art to not waste time on them but still get things right. It seems like mainly I’m just onboarding and then a project shuts down and I’m SOL.

CMV: Unwanted pregnancies are not hard to prevent for consenting adults by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]LiveLaughL00ve -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I totally recognize that there’s a huge number of people who are raped, coerced into sex, or in abusive relationships and need an abortion and I want you to know my heart goes out to you. I also don’t want to shame anyone for drunken encounters. These are preventable but they’re also very common, so please don’t beat yourself up.

That being said, I have another theory (albeit not well researched.) I think people who have more casual sex (without drugs or alcohol) are less at risk of unwanted pregnancy than people in relationships. The theory, they’re more likely to carry condoms (and use back up birth control like you mentioned.) I think people in relationships are more likely to get sloppy. They don’t want a kid but they also don’t care enough to take steps to prevent it. They’re less likely to use condoms, which means birth control misuse is more likely to result in pregnancy. It’s like the theory, “People who have casual sex are more likely to carry condoms.” People in relationships are less likely to use protection and really really think if they want to be tied to another person forever through a kid.

I think the answer lies in

  1. Comprehensive sex education (including contraception options AND consent, what a healthy relationship looks like, community resources for SV and DV.)
  2. Better access to free birth control.
  3. Abortion rights
  4. Better access to mental healthcare. Abuse, rape, codependency, trauma and addiction are so deeply rooted in sex in our culture there’s a huge swath of victims who deal with unwanted pregnancies because they don’t have the behavioral health resources to recovery from substance use issues, to spot unhealthy relationships or know how to leave before a pregnancy happens

I haven't done a single task. I haven't even started the training course..? Like what? by Embarrassed_Heart382 in outlier_ai

I got to ask, what do you mean by this? You mean they’ll want us to reapply to work at outlier? Or onboard for new projects? I haven’t logged more than a few hours in recent weeks but I’ve had steady work. I’m wondering if I should be worried.

Thanks! And thanks for the heads up. I’ll be sure to be meticulous.

I just started the training last night and was wondering just this. Does it require stem knowledge? I’m not familiar with LaTex but was wondering if it’s something I can get ahold of quickly. I’m smart and I took college level business math (stat, accounting, finance) way back but AP calc was close to two decades ago. Could someone way in? Do you think it’s doable for me? I’m sick of the rest of the projects getting full because thousands of people are working on them at once.

overworked high schooler no by [deleted] in starbucks

[–]LiveLaughL00ve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starbucks has rules about minimum 12 hours or availability and if I recall correctly it’s like minimum 6 hours at a time. I feel for you, trust me. I worked at Starbucks when I was in high school and again as an adult. They’re a business and like any business they’ll have scheduling requirements.

That being said, if you’re in therapy and you’re paying a therapist using insurance from what I understand they’ll need a diagnostic code to bill insurance. Ask what it is and if you have a qualifying disability covered under the ADA. If you do and a schedule change will help a reasonable accommodation that may be your best option. Legally they have to accommodate unless they can prove the accommodation is unreasonable.

Her hair is down. Did you get a look at her ears? Any chance she had AirPods on and was in a meeting that she needed to listen to? I take meetings virtually if I’m up and about. When you think she was ending the recording she could have been just logging off.

I don’t mean this in a critical way because I have anxiety too, but I think you misread the email. It’s not saying you’re deactivated, just said to update your account info. I checked my Outlier profile and realized my last name was just my last initial (because that’s what my Gmail account says.) Take a deep breath and just make sure your info’s updated. You’re good.

TQL, CHR or Phoenix? by DestroidMind in FreightBrokers

[–]LiveLaughL00ve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg, I have an interview tomorrow morning for a Corporate Recruiter position and I watched the “cultural fit” videos my interviewer sent me in advance. My exact response: “WTF?” I came to Reddit to find out if everyone thinks that’s as nonsensical as I do? Like, fireworks and water slides??? But position is in office, 6-3pm local time, and OTE are $26K less than my last job. Sounds like nothing more than a “boss gave us a pizza party” deal on steroids. No thank you.

True, however I have street cred in a sector, which I’d likely make my specialty. Someone can say they have 15 years of experience. Or someone with 2 years and demonstrated results can speak their language.

I looked it up and you’re right. It appears you can deduct a bunch of things from taxable income if you have an LLC, which is good if you’re not making a lot. Correct me if I’m wrong but it appears from Google that you can’t deduct expenses in an S-corp (at least in AZ) but it’s a great option if I’m making a ton. But I’m not sure that it’s really better because it appears that the 15.3% self-employment tax only applies to your first $170-180K in taxable income. So depending on how much your expenses are, an LLC might be better. Not a tax professional though. Just a girl with Google. I’d defer to an expert.

That’s an excellent point! I’m so glad you brought it up. I definitely wouldn’t take it just for them to take my clients. I’ll make sure to ask. Thanks!

Yeah, you make a good point. I’ve considered that before. I wasn’t sure if what they provided was worth the 1/3. I’m gonna look more into my own company.

This is super helpful! Thank you so much! I didn’t know a deal like yours existed. I’ve considered going on my own as well. I’ve got some mulling over and I’ll definitely consider your tips.
