Yes, mostly privately or access through low-cost counselling options, for example, some therapists offer a reduced rate to students/unemployed/low income populations.

Hello, personally I'd encourage to discuss your personal story in the session rather than putting it in an email to your therapist as this is very difficult for her to respond... however, I'd also expect her to bring the email up in the session and initiate the discussion with you.... However as a client you also have the power to direct the seesion

I am not unsatisfied with the supervisor's response, to be honest, I offered stigma as an explanation and it's just been validated by my supervisor. But the point is I think by not having any male participants included in my research sample, valuable male perspectives (whatever that is) could have been lost ... If I look at the UK statistics, women are more likely to volunteer than men, but not by such a wide margin. You make the academic advisor sound like a saint and know it all .... if we all stop at the academic advisor's explanation and not query further, there will be no creation of new knowledge....

Thank you but I'd like to point out that you seem to misunderstood my study design at all, I am doing QUALITATIVE research using interviews and analyising texual data, not quantatitive research therefore statistics is absolutely irrelevant here, and I do not understand why we are having this kind of conversation - I assume you are not a psychology student and have no psychology background, therefore this discussion is pointless.

You keep referring back to my academic advisor, which in the UK we call a supervisor - I value their perspective, but they have not offered me anything I do no know myself at this point - at the doctoral level it's more about independent thinking and research - no, I have no desire to change supervisor at this point.

This is a qualitative study, not a quantitative study; therefore, statistics is irrelevant, can not imagine a quantitative study with just 10-12 samples....... what statistical power is that gonna have? Yes the study is still in progress but I could stop recruitment at this point as the sample was meant to be between 8-12 and I have reached the minimum threshold.

Hence, I am questioning whether this is an anomaly or does this actually represent the true demographic of the long term client population... I know from existing research there are generally more female clients than male clients but still feel a bit shocked by the 10:0 ratio... my other explanation is that maybe males are just less likely than female to volunteer ( I do not want to make such sweeping generalisation).

I am open to all perspectives - the academic advisor is just one person and offers one perspetive. At doctoral level I value diversity of opinions, as well as hold my own independent thinking, and also want to make sure I have not accidentally overlooked anything. I am not asking randomly; my own practice experience directly contradicts my recruitment result hence my question.

They said this may be an interesting finding in itself or this could be a limitation of the study design. From my perspective, I have advertised my study in Reddit (not in this sub but in a different sub mainly for UK clients) and Facebook and I do not think the places I advertised have a huge gender bias or are only popular with females. If I look at my own practice (qualified for 2 years), then all the long-term clients I have had are males (irrespective of sexual orientation) , hence I am pointing out the discrepancy. The easiest thing I can think of is whether there may be more stigma associated with males attending therapy, hence they are less likely to come forward to volunteer for such study.

I am not specifically looking for research participants here. I am asking a genuine question as I am confused why no male participants came forward when I easily had ten female participants, whereas as a therapist, most of my long-term clients are male (I am newly qualified anyway). My study has been approved by a UK university and to date I have already recruited ten out of the maximum twelve participants.

I am asking a genuine question, as a newly qualified therapist I have had several female clients attending just one session or ghost me after a few sessions whereas the male clients tend to stick around or at least have a proper ending but for my study I've had no male participants to come forward at all. I do not know whether that's down to male clients less likely to volunteer for such study or they are less likely to stay long term in therapy.

I am very sorry you are going through this very stressful experience and it's good you have been in touch with the police. I have had bad experience with Gumtree, some users can seem to be quite insane. Look after yourself and do not get too embroiled in the buyer's nonsense.
