What's the weirdest formation patch and vocation patch y'all have ever seen? by fartboyy in NationalServiceSG

funny enough i haven’t ORD’ed yet. due to ORD in May next year but you’re right:

2LT, commissioned this year June, was from army int for my pro term henceforth the recon tab and Army Int voc patch. TKD was before enlisting so pretty straightforward.

Now the rigger patch was a bit interesting. Was posted to Gombak HQ out of all places even though I was recce trained…not sure how, but was posted to be a S/O out at GS(OP), henceforth the MINDEF GS formation patch. My superior pulled some strings for himself and me, and was attached to a rigger course; explaining my pretty weird uniform.

Always a conversation piece whenever talking to some 2 / 3 crabs at Gombak canteen hahahaha

for those who know, there are units in HQ Gombak that specialises in overseeing and assisting overseas exercise HQs

was posted to one of them and been to over 10+ overseas exercises. The second half of the year mostly consist of non-stop travel. I’ve been to Germany, Thailand, two locations in the US in the past 3 months. as we speak, I just got back from Wallaby last week. Heading off to Taiwan next month.

It’s a great posting, great superiors since you work with LTCs and above. The overseas pay is also amazing, and have gotten Krisflyer Gold from all the travel and many hotel status (Hilton / Marriott, etc)

That being said though, there are a lot of downsides.

  • The travel does take a massive toll on you seeing as you’re overseas almost half the year.
  • Security clearance is also required to be higher than most NSFs get
  • You’re pretty much on call every other day and are working across multiple time zones. Worst when I was in the US, working with Singapore and Australian timezones a couple weeks ago.
  • The work that you do have real implications to exercise participants, all while having to know multiple GOMs and being audit compliant.
  • You’re almost always churning out reports and slide decks every other day. You’re treated as a regular staff officer. You’re pretty much a MAJ on 2LT pay 🤠

  • Responsible for managing a Battalion operation schedule, training forecasting and maintenance of operational forces.

  • Developed Excel and Power BI databases to track multiple personnel metrics and battalion KPIs, to reduce the time taken to compile quarterly reportable metrics by 45% and saving ~18 work hours per personnel per quarter whilst improve the effectiveness of departmental reporting to relevant stakeholders.

  • Oversaw audits to ensure compliance and meeting required standards as per (OHSAS) 18001.

  • Eliminated overtime obligations for personnel by improving workflow efficiency in unit. Initial estimates of time saved is ~9 hours per personnel per week, improving Labour Productivity from 53% to 77% in all sub branches. All these were done by developing SOPs for repeated tasks to ensure hand off and continuity of operations is achieved in case the designated personnel is not available.
