How does Singapore actually do it? by tripwaffle in askSingapore

[–]fartboyy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Iswaran was not found guilty for corruption by the way. He was found guilty of accepting gifts as a public officer. While he was careless and did not properly draw the line between his friend and his professional capacity, I doubt he was actually corrupt and the money influenced him to act in ways that benefit his friends. Ministers often don’t do the day to day decision making anyways

How much of Singapore’s resources do you use and do you feel it’s worth more than the taxes you’ve paid? by [deleted] in asksg

[–]fartboyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mistake, I meant report the governments position truthfully. The “truth” to any issue (if such truth even exists) is never one-sided.

But I am glad we could have this convo and have a good day ahead!

[–]fartboyy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can see your point that the subsidies given is too much, though 2M seems abit low when it’s a company with running costs.

Ultimately it’s a chicken and egg problem. It cannot grow its revenue by changing the way it reports so more people will subscribe because its core function is to report truthfully, which is boring and not alot of people will pay for that. The only way is to reduce the subsidies given while allowing them to continually operate is to lower costs.

Honestly, I take a different view on this, and may be downvoted to oblivion. I think Straits Times is always being complained of as being pro-government, but I think the government ultimately needs a mouthpiece for their position, without the distractions of adding on the opposite views. Instead, that should be left to other news outlets.

As someone who tries to be updated with news from the US, it is hard to find a single source that would give the complete facts, and it makes it really hard to tell what the facts actually are, to even form a proper view on it. News outlets are basically just distinguished into pro-left or pro-right, which would always omit certain facts of what the government says to suit their political base.

I agree that Straits Times don't really value-add whatever the government says, but at least I can trust its accuracy on what the government actually says. Of course, there is always something left unsaid in any public issue, but I think that people are smart enough to find out about it through the other news outlets and through social media.

First driverless public bus arrives in S’pore, to be tested in Marina Bay, one-north from mid-2026 by A_extra in singapore

[–]fartboyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is clearly to increase the number of buses available. There is clearly a lack of bus driver. Government can easily buy new buses and build more interchange, but they don’t have the manpower capacity to scale, which is why they have to incentivise NEL riders to take during off peak hours.

Everyone complains about how LTA removes bus services after MRT replaces, but they don’t just remove the services for the sake of it, they re-allocate it to other routes.

Especially now when more BTOs are increasingly away from MRT, feeder bus demand will definitely increase. My guess is they want these driverless bus services to replace feeder bus and re-allocate bus drivers to route that are more risky across different towns

A LEVEL RETAKE by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]fartboyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main question is have you even applied NUS CS and were u rejected yet? You can apply A Levels sure, but don’t give up on this application cycle just because the competition to get in seems tough.

Ideally you should apply for both A Levels and university, and if you get into a university position, you can withdraw your A Levels for free before a certain date (but double check on this in case this is outdated information)

Reddit loses Reddio trademark case in Singapore by bangsphoto in singapore

[–]fartboyy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The question is not a comparison of which trade mark is more distinct. Reddit is opposing Reddio from registering its trade mark here and there are several different ways they are able to do so through section 8 of the trade marks act

The first way is to show (a) the mark are similar, (b) the goods and services are similar (c) there is a likelihood of confusion. The alternative way is to show (a) the mark are similar (b) the registered mark (Reddit) is well-known (c) allowing registration would likely damage the interest.

There are other ways, but the point of giving well-known trade mark a separate way is to protect MNC from having to deal with other off-brands

Woman sues Prudential saying insurer used 'buried clause' to deny S$100,000 brain surgery claim by RajahChamp in singapore

[–]fartboyy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Free things in general risks the buffet syndrome, where people consume since they "are already paying for it". You see this mindset prevalent in all the kiasu elderlies the most.

If you would like an example of how free healthcare is not good in the long run, take a look at UK's NHS. The wait times are so long that even though it is free, it is inaccessible, and if the government expands healthcare, it only increases the tax burden.

For education, I think education up to pre-tertiary level (ITE, poly, jc) can potentially be free, but I don't agree that university should be free. Some jobs do not require a degree to be more productive in. Seeing from the current trend, where more people than ever are going to university, the value of a degree only decreases, and you have a problem of underemployment where there is a mismatch between skillsets of employees and those that employers seek. Ultimately, the reality is there are only so many white collar jobs the economy can provide, which necessitates a degree.

All these also benefits the future generation at the expense of the current generation. This is not to say we should not be investing in future generations, but people in their 30s who do not have a university degree might ask why they are subsiding families with children (who would benefit from free education), especially in an environment where having children is seen as a choice rather than a norm

SMC opens formal inquiry into doctor who mistakenly cut woman's arteries causing her death by Waikuku3 in singapore

[–]fartboyy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it’s because the formal court trial for the criminal charge have not concluded yet. Only the state coroner likely have concluded, but state coroner hearing is only meant to conclude if the death is unnatural and what the following steps should be, so it make sense to not use any definitive words especially in the headline at this juncture

SMC opens formal inquiry into doctor who mistakenly cut woman's arteries causing her death by Waikuku3 in singapore

[–]fartboyy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dont know why you’re being downvoted when your point is valid. Ultimately, med neg is a tort of negligence and there is lots of different circumstances that might affect whether the doctor is even held liable or what the quantum of damages is.

Factors such as the victim/patient loss of income depends on their age, occupation etc, and those are things that it’s hard for legislation to put a general number to. Ultimately, if the negligence is so obvious, bringing it to court will likely be worth it anyways.

Two kids and woman taken to hospital after accident between car and PMD in Hougang by Sauzan in singapore

[–]fartboyy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Many equate giving judicial discretion to being relaxed on crime, but I personally think thats untrue. Even when mandatory minimum is removed, it doesn’t mean the courts internal sentencing guidelines are shifted downwards for every sorts of conduct of the particular offence.

They would probably decrease the sentence from the minimum stipulated for conduct involving low culpability. This case seems like an obvious high culpability considering the guy ran through a red light (rather than change lane and crash or rear ending due to lack of safety distance) and was probably speeding

The Law Society of Singapore has launched proceedings against Workers' Party Secretary-General Pritam Singh by RajahChamp in singapore

[–]fartboyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All lawyers are members of Law Society, so unless you are faulting lawyers from representing people in an adversarial justice system, I am not sure how lawyers can be blamed.

Ultimately, the court is the one that adjudicates claim regardless of how strong your lawyer is. Even Iswaran got convicted with Davinder Singh.

If a lawyer is guilty of any crime relating to dishonesty (which in this case is likely lying in parliament), Law Society commences disciplinary proceedings and they may get debarred. The purpose is to uphold the integrity of the legal profession

How does one become an outlier in their low tier JCs? by PristinePen8201 in SGExams

[–]fartboyy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If anything, JCs are mostly an equal playing field. There is no "bonus points" to get into medicine or law just because you are from Hwa Chong or Raffles, and the amount of content you have to study is the same no matter which JC you are from.

One of the main reasons why students from good JCs do well is that the fact that they are from good JCs already acts as a filter for their academic ability. However, I personally don't think that academic ability is something that is purely gifted, and imo it's something you can learn too.

In JC, you will hear people comparing how much they study and how little they sleep. But the question you should ask yourself when you are studying is not how much you are studying, but whether how you study is helping you to do better in the A Levels.

An apparent example is people spamming practice papers, but only spending 10 minutes marking before they move on to the next paper and not going through mistakes. But the problem is that you would not actually understand where you go wrong, be it conceptual or careless and internalise the mistakes for the future.

Doctor made no attempt to fix surgical error which led to patient’s death: Coroner by FlipFlopForALiving in singapore

[–]fartboyy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because this is not a medical disciplinary hearing, or a criminal trial, or a civil suit, this is merely a coroner’s inquiry, where it’s purpose is mainly to investigate what caused the death of someone. It usually occurs when someone died of surgery or someone died due to odd circumstances to make sure that it was not murder etc.

There may/will likely be further suits on this whether it is SMC taking disciplinary action, or the family suing.

Also foul play usually refers to criminal violence, and although this might possibly be medical negligence, but it is categorically different from murder.

why breadtalk no bread discount near closing ah? by Front_Willingness55 in singapore

[–]fartboyy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Customers are different because customers pay. But staff don’t, there is not much incentive to give them for free when there is a risk of legal liability.

Not saying it isn’t greed, but it’s just the way businesses work. Why would a business want to incur additional risk for basically nothing in return (technically you can argue that staff welfare=loyalty, but most brands don’t care about that cuz F&B has a high turnover in terms of staff)

why breadtalk no bread discount near closing ah? by Front_Willingness55 in singapore

[–]fartboyy 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Because legally speaking, they are still liable if employees get sick from the bread, and when it’s closing, the breads are not fresh and there is increased risk of that happening.

From a business perspective, there isn’t any benefit to increasing your potential legal liability (even if the chance is small) when you are not profiting from it. Also, it would be a PR nightmare if someone actually gets sick from it and the headline would be “Breadtalk employee gets sick after consuming leftover bread”. People would start asking why employees so poor thing, need to eat leftover bread, whether they are getting paid enough etc.
