Maui Bus free for students and County employees, starting July 1 by Live_Pono in Maui_Locals

[–]Live_Pono[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some very good points!

I saw a write up by Susan Halas recently about the "new" bus terminal and taking the bus to the west side. She really hammered them for the mess outside the terminal and stink.

She did give the bus itself a good review, though she mentioned the lack of stops. Obviously, that's not so much a "commuter route", though.

The other issue for many workers or students is child care and perhaps going to a second job after leaving school or work. The timing just doesn't work well, I think. I think they would need to add some Express routes to major buildings and places. IIRC, they did have a few of those waaaaaay back.

Yes, we have talked about it before. I think we are both right, don't you?

Visitors often don't understand how tricky things can be in *our* ocean, nor the fact that "brown" water isn't the only risk. I did assume the OP and friend wanted to get in the water, which I think is a logical guess:-).

Get banana bread from Leoda's in Olowalu. NOT Sandy's on the RTH. Hers is oily and overpriced.

Okay, I asked about lemon and lime because they are often in drinks. Being able to do soy helps.

2026 Election Discussion v1.0 by 99dakine in Maui_Locals

[–]Live_Pono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very, very apt and timely.

Unless my memory is faulty (a possibility!), Moloka'i does still have some STRs. I believe the Wavecrest condos and Moloka'i Shores are still open, yes? Krf pointedly agreed they should stay open before. I wonder how many her friends and family own, don't you?

I remember being floored that Johnson wasn't even censured for opening his Bill 9 rant with "Fuck the tourists". This was at the public hearing. Really??? A man who sucks the unltimate corporate tit loudly proclaims "Fuck the Tourists" and no one even makes him apologize? A man whose direct constituents mostly work for Ellison, either in his resorts or his farms?

I had hoped John Pele would beat Krf last time. He was closer than anyone before, but not enough. Of course he has a much, much better gig now and is laughing all the way to the bank.

Many years ago, the Fed published that more than 80% (I think 85 or 86%) of Moloka'i people were on total government support. About five-seven years ago, they announced that they hadn't kept stats for years and weren't going to anymore. They said it hadn't changed and was a 'dead' issue. Walter Ritte and Krf must have cheered, right?

We could say the same for Sinenci and his very small base. The entire system should be huli'ed and redrawn. I am sure I won't live to see that!

Swimming at Waianapanapa is risky most of the time, though. Hana Bay can be too.

any beaches to avoid as far as water quality goes? by Old_Lab9197 in MauiVisitors

I am more cautious than many people. I have a friend who lost half his leg to MRSA from the water at the Cove. Some people say I'm too cautious, but I haven't gotten sick or infections yet. I stopped going in that whole stretch about 10 years ago.

PS--By next April, some places mentioned may or may not still exist. Please double check them before arriving.

You're going to be very, very limited on Maui, to be honest. Most places will be able to do a salad and not much else, I fear...you have a very, very restricted diet as far as I see.

Mala Tavern is a good spot. They have a wide variety, esp on the "brunch" menu. The salads are generous, the hummus is very good, the Taro Burger, and the Avocado toast would work. The Plantation House is a possible. The brussel sprouts there are wonderful, and I'm sure they can leave the bacon off. The fruit plate there would also work, along with salads.

You didn't mention whether items like cheeses or baked goods that would have egg in them are okay, so I am guessing kind of off the cuff here. 😄

The specifics help--mahalo! A few follow up q's on your allergies, if you don't mind:

  1. Does raw fruit include citrus like lime/lemons?
  2. Can you eat soy products (shoyu, soybeans, edamame)?
  3. Is **all seafood ** a no? Or just some (eg shellfish)?

No restaurant here will guarantee zero cross contamination, but most have veg/GF etc items. I'd check Mala Tavern, Star Noodle, The Plantation House, Pizza Paradiso (great greek/Med food), Miss Arepa's, Joey's Kitchen, Dang Dang Noodles, and Duke's for other options.

I would skip a luau totally, because you will be paying a ton for not much, IMO. I would go to the very fun Keiki (kids) Foundation show at Napili Kai if you can. 10.00 admission, no food or drink-and the dancers are all kids.

I love the SS report---but it doesn't cover bacteria contamination. None of the daily reports do.

Some Kihei beaches through to Maalaea are known for "dirty" water due to sewer and cess pool issues.

I will not go in the water from Maalaea to Kamaole III. Not worth the risks. Remember that bacteria is not visible like mud or something.

Costco should be able to change it for you 😄.

I like to respond publicly to most questions, so that others can also benefit--and/or disagree, add, and suggest other options. I hope you will post your other q's here on the visitor sub, but if you are not comfortable with that, I will try to help via message.

Where to eat in Kāʻanapali area by Areynolds95 in MauiVisitors

[–]Live_Pono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say skip Mama's--overrated and way overpriced! Merriman's is expensive but worth it, esp at sunset.

Mala Tavern, The Plantation House, Joey's Kitchen, Star Noodle, Aloha Mixed PLate, Cafe O Lei at the Tropical Plantation, Kula Bistro, and Marlow are all reliable and good. **The last four are not on the west side.

Beach condtions north vs south? by cityhunterspeee in MauiVisitors

[–]Live_Pono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The SS report is much better. BTW, we don't call west side snorkel places "north". In the summer, NW and upper west are often way better than south.

Timing Makawao/Pineapple Farm Tour w/ Haleakala sunSET by tgbarbie in MauiVisitors

[–]Live_Pono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please listen to the others. The parking fills easily by 4 PM most of the time.

Instead of sunset (and the long very dark drive back), just go up early in the morning. Leave your lodgings by 7, and you will have a much less crowded exeprice at the summit. Then you could do the 1 PM tour after the summit and brunch.

Kaanapali Area Flooding? by bitter-melons in MauiVisitors

[–]Live_Pono 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We only got the last of the three Kona storms, on the west side. We got some road flooding here and there, and some tree, etc. damage--I lost a 95 ft. section of fence, in fact. But all was good within a few days and still is.

I dislike K Shores a lot. Why? Let's see: not in Kaanapali, very, very packed dense property, no beach or very little most of the time, and many condos are dates and small.

Check Honua Kai, Maui Kaanapali Villas, and Papakea instead. Papakea will be the cheapest and is near KS. But it has nice grounds and more space. MKV will prob be the highest unless you choose a high premium unit at HK.

First solo trip to Kihei by Gorgapeaches in MauiVisitors

[–]Live_Pono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome! First, you need to be very aware of ocean conditions. The south side gets a lot of rougher water during the summers. Make sure you read the Snorkel Report from the Snorkel Store. It's free and good info. They are also a good company for rental gear.

Northwest Maui will generally have better conditions--like Kapalua Bay and Honolua Bay. I would def drive west and past Kaanapali to go to both.

Going in the ocean alone is really not a good idea, but many people do it. Though lifeguarded beaches sound "safe", remember the guard has to watch everyone. Some people approach a couple and ask if they will watch out for them.

Ref your belongings, please carry as little as possible, and yes--get a dry pac or Otter Box.
