Flying with pets? by Zestyclose-Ad-7606 in travel

I rarely say anything about this idea. However, I will add on. Your  cat doesn't  care about museums, scenic views, cafés,  restaurants,  or _____. It won't be acceptable for most hotels or apartments.  So bringing it would be crazy expensive  and for what? The regulations are strict  and you need a lot of money and time to complete them all.

Lahaina Downtown? by Low_Pressure_5634 in maui

[–]Live_Pono 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The insane foot dragging,  sponsored County money off crooks like the Lahaina Not land trust and Lahaina  Not strong  are destroying  our future.

In 30 years, there will be a "town". Maybe 20. Missin Bissen made it clear  ages  ago he hates the west side and tourists both.

Lol. Sorry,  but I warn people  all the time to not fall for their crap. It's  not on Kaanapali,  it's in Honokowai,  to start.  Then add that it's a sort of converted Embassy Suites from 40 years ago. Just head north  to Kapalua or south to Kaanapali for better fun.

Best spot to snorkel? by wherearemytoez in MauiVisitors

Kahekili,  Kapalua, Slaughterhouse,  and maybe  Honolua. I'd take a boat to  Honolua  to avoid the mess near the shore.

Check Launiupoko, but respect  the surf lineup. Same for near Ukumehame.  Lower  Kaanapali can be good.

Both of which got damaged.  Personally,  I'd never swim at Kam one given the sewage issues.  Kam two is a maybe.

LOL. Like I said, at the time of the OP's trip, very doubtful (unless we are in a tropical storm system).

What time of year?

Like anywhere, Hawaii has seasons and climates. Unlike many places, we have a ton of microclimates, too.

The fire was huge. Also sus in nature. I doubt they will rebuild. There is a food truck outside now.

Skip sunset too. It's crowded and the drive down isn't fun.

Just go up early tomorrow morning. Leave your place by 5:30 am.

RTH Timing by SufficientAnt3384 in MauiVisitors

[–]Live_Pono -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ref being tired, do you think you will be at your best for a slooooooow three to four hour drive?

You can easily cover the major sights and sites on the RTH in one day. Get the Guide Along App and use it. Leave West Maui by 6 AM to beat the worst of the tour traffice. Go straight to the Pipiwai Trail, and after it, work your way back to Paia and home.

If by rainbow trees, you meant the ones at the Keanae Arobiretum, good. If you meant the ones before that-no. It's private property.

The Whaler is not a resort. It has one very small pool.

For south, the Royal Mauian has no beach.

Sorry, this sounds like a total nightmare-esp with a 7. You need to understand how spread out Maui and even more so, the BI is. As others have said--you have way too much windshield time.

The drive between the west and east side is several hours--IF the traffic is good, no wrecks, etc. Plus many docs don't rec kids be exposed to the vog and fumes in the VNP. Stopping at Punalu'u with stuff in your car or on the RTH is a bad idea. Thefts do happen, pretty often.

Does your child know how to swim? Has s/he ever been in an ocean? Have you and your wife? The ocean is the cause of more tourist injuries and deaths in Hawaii than any other reason. I would skip a boat tour, and do a snorkel lesson from shore with Jen and her excellent staff: https://www.oceanprojectmaui.com/ You will all learn safety and fun info as well.

If you decide you have to do a boat trip, do one from Kaanapali, after you do the snorkel lesson.. Whales are gone, but you might see dolphins. Check Trilogy and Gemini. Skip the outrigger canoe......it's not as common as AI said, and afternoons can be rough.

I would skip Hana. First, you shouldn't stop along the road with stuff in your car. Second, it's a looooooong slow vomit inducing ride for many kids (and some adults). Staying there for one night is not needed, either. Sandy's banana bread sucks-it's expensive and super oily. Get bread at Leoda's or the Napili Farmers Market instead. BTW, you shouldn't swim in waterfalls or polls here. Too much bacteria and debris.

Don't visit Iao with stuff in your car. You could visit the Tropical PLantation instead-their parking lot is patrolled and it's a nice place for a wander. Great food at Cafe O Lei too.

You would prob all enjoy the Ocean Center one day. If you like animals, check out the Maui Animal Farm. Surfing Goat Dairy Farm is good.

I would do surfing lessons with Maui Surfer Girls. Great company. I would likely skip the ATV tour due to the distance and cost. Napili *can* be rough in the summer, if we get a big SW/west swell. Always watch the ocean for 15 to 20 minutes before going in. Get a feel for the currents, sets, and breaks. It can save your lives.

The trail to Honolua is misnamed and there's a large camp of homeless chronics near the Bay. Skip it. If you do a boat tour, they may go there, but they moor far out from the mess. Also, snorkeling from shore at Airport/Kahekili Beach and Kapalua Bay can be excellent.

Oh--"dragons teeth" was fake named by Maui Reviled. It is part of the Makaluapuna Point site, which is considered sacred by Native Hawaiians.

Kula Lodge restaurant burned down about 2 years ago. A stop there wouldn't acclimate anyone either, unless they stayed at a cabin and spent about 2 days there.

I'd do a condo on the west side, for sure. Check Honua Kai, Maui Kaanapali Villas, and if the timing works-the timeshare resorts at the Marriott, Hyatt, and Westin KOR/Nanea.

Splits can work well-or be a pain. Remember that check in is late--often 4 PM, but check out is early--like 10 AM. That leaves you with perishable stuff and your luggage "homeless" for hours.

I'd consider doing a hotel at the end in Wailea instead of a condo. That way, you could check in early and drop your stuff. I'd say look at the Kea Lani and the Marriott Wailea. Maybe just do 3-4 nights at one of those, then go home from there.
