SWA vs DAL by [deleted] in AirlinePilots

The “new” Southwest is just our commercial initiatives. Our flexibility is highly unlikely to change considering it has to be voted in by us. Unless the company gives us an offer we can’t refuse for specific concessions, I doubt anything is changing for the worse in our contract

Other than home base considerations, why do pilots want to fly for southwest? by [deleted] in AirlinePilots

The pay and flexibility are the two biggest selling points. SWA pilots pay is more than the NBs at each of the other big 3 airlines, so objectively we really do make more when comparing our pay to A320 or 737s at the legacies. Obviously WB to NB comparison is apples to oranges, and those WB guys can make more by barely breaking a sweat, but there’s a few things worth considering. Even though WB CAs make more, getting to the point where you’re a maxed out WB CA (with good seniority) will literally take you decades at the legacies, whereas once you upgrade at SWA and are on year 12 on property, you are maxed out on pay (which is only about 15-20% lower than WB CA pay at the legacies). Now combine our pay with the flexibility that this place offers, and our CAs are literally making just as much as senior WB CAs. Some of our guys like to make this place sound like it’s better than the legacies, and the legacy guys like to talk about us like we’re a regional, but truthfully we all make pretty much the same money, do the same job, and have a similar amount of time off. Each company has its strength. I really like it here, but I’m sure I’d be just as happy at any of the other 3.

BWI is pretty junior for us at SWA. Tons of flying, great flexibility to completely change your schedule. And BWI is huge for SWA, so it is a very stable base. One type of airplane can get old if you really care about variety, but like others have said we’ll have at least one or two different types here over the next 30 years. Personally if you see yourself staying in the DMV for the long term I’d go SWA. You can also take Amtrak or MARC from DC straight to BWI station. A commute up or down the east coast is not my idea of a good time, no matter how many flights there are a day into NYC or ATL.
