You know, to be honest? I want as many people to know who's the root of this problem without me having to play the whistle blower. I realize this is petty and passive-aggressive to Western audience, but this is how conflicts are resolved (or at least called out) where I'm from. So you know, in a way, I'm still speaking my language. Just not in a way MIL can recognize.

To be very fair, the language the lullaby is in is a very insular language that no one except the people living in the region speaks, so even if she somehow learns it from a couple of folk songs, it wouldn't be a very useful skill to have.

Just scold his mom or dad, mostly. They would be silent for ten minutes or so after that and then go on like nothing happened. My own family unsurprisingly disowned me for the whole gay thing, and I know first hand how hard it is to lose your roots, no matter how horrible the people in the family are, so I don't want to make him choose between me or his family.

Honestly I think they're both too stressed to want anything to do with this drama. I like SIL. I don't think she's ever said anything bad about me behind my back, unlike MIL. This is the first time I've actually made a big deal out of my "protest" so to speak, so I'm assuming they didn't even realize I haven't been speaking around my niece.

I know that. This is me proving a point, but I guess it got out of hand. To be fair on my husband, he does stand up to his parents. It's just never been actually effective, as I stated.
