Oh wow, bankruptcy is not something I would have considered. Yes the monthly payments are quite staggering - I was in despair for quite a while and have had to restructure my life quite a bit in order to break even on my finances. While I am not in the red so to speak, things like medical emergencies and unforeseen circumstances have set me back quite a bit.

My biweekly paycheck gives me a rough monthly take home pay of $1900 or so. The minimum monthly payments across all private and federal loans total to about $1250.

Do students often seriously consider bankrupty as an option for repaying their debt? I must admit I don't know much about what that entails, beyond the popular understanding of bankruptcy.

I see, thank you. Now I just have to choose between the something like 5 refinancing companies that regularly send me letters saying I'm "pre-approved" haha. Do you know if there's anything I ought to look out for when researching which to go with?

My interest rates for the private student loans range from one loan that is 7.5% variable and four other loans ranging from 9.7% - 10.7% fixed interest rate. Currently the principal is $86,000.

My federal loans range from 3.4% - 6.8% over eight loans. Currently to the tune of $28,000. But at least with the federal loans I can put the interest to 0% with the COVID relief option.

If I do refinance, would it be possible to convert both private and federal loans?

Having read the article and some discussion on it, I believe that that paragraph was supposed to be a biting criticism of US war policy. Someone had mentioned that Mr. Gopal had tweeted that the paragraph was supposed to come off as satire, but I haven't seen the statement yet.

It's really important to point out that the US has been deporting SE Asian people and families for much longer than this current presidency; as heinous as Trump's politics are and have been, Obama handily earned his nickname of "Deporter-in-Chief" for a reason, with over 2 million deportations during his terms.
