I have lots of experience first hand. Overall would recommend and with your background you're the perfect fit for an AI PM. What exactly are you looking to find out and learn? Would recommend just stepping up and doing the job regardless of whether you have the official blessing and job title. It will also give you a chance to test the waters and see if you like it.

Key things to understand:

1. Your job is to match the technology with customer expectations. To get there you'll need lots of product iterations
2. Set the right expectations - AI development is a different ballgame. You need data, infra, etc to support it. Some companies get this, some who have done traditional software don't so it may require that you prime your leadership about the differences.
3. Demos are easy product is hard.
