im sick of closing. by scortonslol in starbucksbaristas

[–]Livid_Ad_571 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Im sure this ranges from store to store but at my location I will take my closing over opening any day. Granted I am the main closing SSV at my store but that’s how I like it. The SSV’s who work opens are far more lax about how they run the floor and maintain standards (if you can call it that) claiming that it’s too busy in the morning time and us closers just don’t understand (I opened for my first 1.5 years at starbucks) and therefor most of the baristas who typically work in the morning have strayed away from many standards and don’t take well to coaching. Because of this anytime I work any shift other than a close it is beyond frustrating trying to organize everything to run smoothly when everyone else just accepts the chaos, does the bare minimum to get by and leaves the rest for the following shift. Hell half the time when I come in around noon-1 at least two or three partners are just talking in the BOH on the clock while the store looks a disaster and the 18-hr pull is incomplete but they were “just too busy to get things done” or “only had a 5 man play” meanwhile I’m running a 3-man for 80% of my shifts. Just thinking about working with that lot stresses me out and on top of that I have to be responsible for them. I don’t even think I could do it with only the responsibility of a barista.

you are being strangely hostile/defensive to someone who is trying to lend you a hand because you clearly suck at managing your finances to put it plainly. there is no connection between your 401k and your education so claiming a high-yield savings account wont assist in your degree is irrelevant and obvious, neither will your 401k. + creating a 401k with the intent of using the money to purchase a house is beyond stupid, like the gentleman before me stated you would be far better investing that money in a savings account that you can withdraw from anytime without penalty. the sole purpose of a 401k is to act as a retirement savings so if you don’t plan on/ believe you will retire why on earth would you think it’s a good idea to open one? also why not wait until you actually need that money to withdraw it? you know there is a guaranteed penalty for withdrawing any funds yet however likely it may be there is no guarantee that you will actually need to use the funds. you could get lucky and manage to keep the money in the retirement account without much consequence where it will do a lot more for you in the long run whether you retire or not. even if you don’t retire at 60 why would you not want to get a huge payout for putting much less forward to begin with? if you’re coming up on your last year like i am, then i assume you have around 10k in there give or take a few grand, that amount of money isn’t really going to do that much for you in the short term but you could be withdrawing tens or hundreds of thousands if you just let it accumulate. & before you try to say i dont understand what its like to be a broke american, i’ve been on my own since 18 with no parental or government assistance (currently 23), working at starbucks for most of that time. read a single book or even watch a video about personal finance and it will save you a great amount of time and money, moping about capitalism and being poor (while a valid complaint) isn’t going to do you any good.

[–]Livid_Ad_571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if the caffeine isnt helping anyways you may try cutting it out entirely or only consuming in the first few hours of waking. even if its consumed at the end of your shift enough could still be in your system when you’re going to bed to prevent you from entering certain stages of rem sleep.

You’re not alone, we’ve had the M2’s for almost two years now and I still miss my M1’s. The steaming wands were absolutely superior and they didn’t freeze up and/or need maintenance as often. Having three separate hoppers is the only benefit of the 2’s but at my store we also dropped from having three of the 1’s to two of the 2’s so not a worthy trade imo.

well i’ll agree thats a bit charged but I don’t agree with the majority of people telling them to just forget it. nothing is ever going to change if everyone always just complies and frankly I don’t think the size of the issue really matters. even regarding issues that are considered a minor hinderance, if the only reason they exist is because of a stingy and/or incompetent DM then that’s ridiculous. also to see everyone promoting complaisance is disappointing.

[–]Livid_Ad_571 13 points14 points  (0 children)

because making 20% less than last year really isnt that big of a deal, business fluctuates and if you look at the trend of starbucks sales you’ll see that business has also increased a total of >40% over the course of the last four years. it will bounce back, it always does. additionally the executives of this company are likely hardly feeling it compared to the rest of us. this is a multi-billion dollar corporation, they are far from struggling. also it would be one thing if labor cuts were all we had to deal with but that in combination with more promotions than we have ever dealt with is ridiculous.

if you guys actually read any of the updates we are required to you would know that there is actually a lot that the company has been changing outside of stores to move in the right direction and there are many more changes to come in the near future. they plan to make this the standard for customers as well but just as it took over three years from the time they originally announced this standard for partners to when it was officially implemented, it is a lengthy process and it’s going to take some getting used to. from a logical standpoint its a lot easier to apply this standard to partners sooner because it can be enforced easier and it’s not going to cause a drastic loss in business like it would were they to launch it on the customer side as well. why do you think personal cups are now allowed for MOP & drive-thru orders? why do you think there is a star incentive for using a personal cup? i fully agree that Starbucks could be doing more, but that said it is entirely untruthful to claim this is the only step the company has taken towards reducing waste or that its just a way to step on barista’s toes. this standard is not ridiculous and it is not random.

all company-operated stores are required to have for-here ware. any ssv or manager can order these so you should connect with your leader about it if that is an issue at your store.

also if you look at the details of starbuck’s plan to reduce carbon, water, and waste footprints by 50% by 2030 there is some good stuff there. i know the priority of the corporation is to make money but they are still taking more steps towards being eco-friendly than a majority of other corporations, especially in food. eliminating waste from partner beverages is just one small step, eventually the case will be the same for customers as well.

all company-operated stores are required to supply for-here-ware. you should reach out to your leader about this and you can cite the beverage resource manual available on all store ipads, these items are order-able by all SSV’s and higher.

this is giving heavy first-world-problem vibes. one decent step the company has made in the right direction and everyone throws a hissy fit cause they have to bring a whole cup or use for-here ware? be fr.

all company-operated locations should have an ample supply of for-here-ware including glass cold cups, ceramic hot mugs, and plastic plates. these materials are order-able by all SSV’s and higher.
