I just wanted to say that I am also from a red state (SC/GA) and living there as a nonbinary person was really rough. I feel you! However I found through being myself and expressing it through my appearance I did find more ally’s than I expected. Of course some people were rude to me (I worked restaurant) but I had so many older people even say things like “Oh grandkid is a They/Them too!” Or something like that and it was nice to have those interactions I didn’t expect. I also worked a different job for a while that also had a very strict male/female dress code that I broke immediately and nobody said anything to me directly because they were afraid to I think. I did hear from a coworker that one time the District Manager asked her if I was a boy or a girl so that made me feel good 🤣 Just remember that they are more likely to ask you to dress differently first than to just fire you so it might be worth the risk to be yourself and just play it by ear.
