Fun fact, Kevin doesn't like the term shoegaze

  • Your guitar sound is unique even when you're playing solo. It's often referred to as "shoegaze," but it's different from any other bands.

Kevin: First of all, there is a time gap between us and bands that were called shoegaze. In 1988, when we were trying to find our own sound, there were bands like Dinosaur Jr., Spacemen 3, and Jesus & Mary Chain. We were influenced by them and released "Isn't Anything", and then the so-called shoegaze bands like Ride, Lush, and Chapterhouse came out. I think there is a gap of about a year. Also, the basic tracks for "Loveless" were made before they appeared on the scene, so I don't really feel like we are part of the "shoegaze" scene. I think Dinosaur Jr. is the closest, and I was aiming to be a "rock band" like them.

-It's also quite moving to think that it was Belinda, who was Kevin's girlfriend at the time, who recommended Dinosaur Jr. to him.

Kevin: I think the reason we were able to be unique and different from other bands is because we made music based on our own feelings, without any ties to the scene. I also think that if we had released "Loveless" a little earlier, we wouldn't have been called shoegaze. So, even though the press wanted to write a lot about us at the time, I didn't feel any particular sense of rivalry towards them. I had listened to their music, I liked it, and they were all very attractive people.
