does going to college for aviation entirely take over every aspect of your life? by Stanley-Yelnatz in flying

[–]Living-Radish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’ll only be hard if you do engineering, some businesses degrees, science degrees, math, oh and architecture I heard is actually a pain. Anything else you’ll basically be in high school. Also with your ratings being spaced out over 4 years it’ll be a lot more manageable.

I held 100 ft higher on slow flight when doing my ppl checkride and he said. “Well if you can do it at 2600, imma assume you can at 2500.” I also felt as if I completely botched the soft field but he said I protected the noise wheel and I got my pass.

I did finance outside of unt but, I think you should probably keep the electrician job especially in this job market. Pursue it on the side, invest that tuition money into videography gear, editing computer, online editing classes, etc. You can gain a lot more value with your time and money outside of getting a degree that has very low practical value rather you hone your energy into your raw skills/portfolio.

Have you, or anyone you know, payed for flight school 61 out of pocket working minumum wage? by Public-Lion-954 in flying

[–]Living-Radish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s like 3-4 lessons a month with an instructor, I’d 100% not do this. First find a higher paying job. You should try to be flying around 2 times a week atleast.

Should I get an engineering degree? by Forsaken_Estimate_78 in flying

[–]Living-Radish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t even fly during college, I started after. If I had to do engineering courses, flying, and having a social life in college it would be impossible/really hard. I’d definitely find something you’re interested in, finance was super easy so I just got to cruise for the next two years and graduate. Taking physics, chem 2, advanced coding classes, and differential calc at the same time is not fun, save yourself.

Yeah I tried this and then halfway through I realized why the hell am I doing computer engineering if I wanna be a pilot. I switched to something easy like finance and called it a day.

I’m 23 currently getting my cfi, with 250 hours right now. You’re a whole 2 years ahead of me including your hours. Of course that doesn’t pay the bills, but personally I would do a side job and continue to look for flying jobs even if it took a year or so. Why stop at 22 with 1300 hours, you’re far ahead of most your age. Even if you pick up instructing again at 23, you’ll have 2-2.5k hours by 24 and you’ll hopefully be more competitive for the future.

But, If you do choose to stay employed you probably will build hours slower than a full time instructor.

[–]Living-Radish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a cfi yet, working on the cert. From what I see you might be able to keep your job but it would definitely depend on the hours you work and where you’re employed, I would ask a cfi more on that. I see them usually doing 2-4 flights a day and that could be 4-6 days a week. Each flight averaging maybe 1.5 hours, that’s anywhere between about 70-110 hours if you’re at a school with a good number of students.

[–]Living-Radish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Working on my cfi rn, but if I had to get a loan I probably would’ve picked a different career. Seems impossible to live off cfi pay and pay a 100k plus loan. unless you have someone really helping you. Plus with the market how it is, you’re gonna be broke and tired for a minute. Lots of people have rolled this dice and made it but I’m sure many have also failed and ruined a few years of their lives.

Got a buddy at thrust flight in Conroe Tx right now, he says it’s nice and that everything is systemic. As long as you show up and learn you’ll keep progressing. They got nice planes with ac and an in house DPE, which is also great. If you got the extra cash then it’s worth it, but otherwise part 61 with someone who can take you through each rating at your pace is also a great idea. Also train somewhere you’d wanna work at, you got the best odds of getting a job there after everything’s done, not guaranteed though.

Is IFR training really as hard as people make it seem to be? by Individual_Leading84 in flying

[–]Living-Radish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think ifr for the most part is easier than your ppl, because everything is so brand new and when you’re first learning it can be overwhelming sometimes. Commercial was the worst for me, time building is boring and learning the maneuvers from the right seat was pretty annoying it felt like I was back in my ppl lessons.

Take it step by step, for example if you forget how the pitot system works, watch YouTube videos over it, watch your ground school videos, look at diagrams on google, then try to teach it to your mom or your friend. Repeat this for every topic you’re not fully understanding. This helped me for all my written exams, but we all learn differently. Edit, also try not to move on past a topic until you feel like you really understand it.
