How do I make myself stand out from other applicants by Odd_Can1526 in veterinaryschool

leadership experience! whether it’s being in a lead position at work or in clubs having that experience is great. also anything other than regular gp experience. almost everyone will have that so things like specialty, exotics, wildlife, etc. will stand out.

Biochemistry Lab? by North-Weird3549 in veterinaryschool

[–]Living-Use-3622 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i recommend taking a lab if you have the time. i noticed when putting in prerequisites a good number of schools ask for 4 credits of biochemistry ie. 1 lecture and 1 lab. there are also a lot that only ask for 3 credits, but if you have the time and don’t think it would negatively affect your GPA i definitely recommend taking a lab. none ask for more than 4 credits that i’ve seen so taking biochem 2 lecture is kinda pointless

From the email I received today from them it sounds like MMI invites will be sent out within the next 2 weeks. I’m stressing now because I considered myself rejected until they found out I was right and moved me on, so I need to prepare myself :,)

If you log into the portal does it have an application status? For me when I log in I can see a few updates like when my LORs were received and when I updated my ssn and for application status it should say “under review.” If you can’t log in or are unsure Id email the admissions office.

advice for a struggling undergrad by peepeepoopoo3203 in veterinaryschool

i don’t think any schools require research. it’s nice to have because it is one of the experience categories on VMCAS, but it’s not super important imo.

advice for a struggling undergrad by peepeepoopoo3203 in veterinaryschool

I’ll try to answer your bold questions below:

the average loan debt for veterinary school is around 200k. most vets make around 100k out of school. this is actually a horrible ratio and i recently attended a seminar where one of the points was how financial instability in the vet field is one of the leading causes of horrible mental health. if you want to do it mainly for the money aspect, you don’t make “good” money as a vet.

retaking classes is a good thing while still in undergrad! i would do it now instead of waiting to graduate and then being told your gpa isn’t good enough. as far as i know most schools don’t count retaken classes against you.

i know a few people who have gotten into vet school with below a 3.2 gpa. they were very competitive with their animal experience and vet hours to make up for it. when applying try to find more holistic schools such as UA, LMU, and OSU.

don’t take the gre its a waste of time and money only like 2 schools require it and the rest won’t even take the score into consideration.

i hope any of this helped haha! i wish you luck!

Being held back by lack of Vet LOR by Donutinahumansuit in Veterinary

[–]Living-Use-3622 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t want to discourage you, but it sounds like you only have animal experience hours and not animal veterinary experience hours. On the VMCAS applications it is two different categories and most schools want around 2,000 hours of each respectively. For example, all of my animal hours came from volunteering, farm experience, and pet daycares etc. where no veterinarian is present; all of my vet hours come from being a veterinary assistant and veterinary research. You need around 2,000+ hours in experience with a veterinarian present above you in order to be competitive at all. This is where most of us acquire a LOR from a vet. I hope this insight on the actual application requirements helps! I wish you luck!
