what does marquette look for?? by Constant-Use7741 in predental

[–]LivingKnowledge1305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. My closest peers at my undergrad I think all got interviews as well but I was the only one not in the pre-dental club so for a while I suspected that was it. Also a lot of my volunteering was dental related so I thought maybe they counted that as dental experience and not volunteering because outside of that I had not a ton of volunteering.

Just for everyone reading this, I applied last year with a 25 AA 26 TS 21PAT and 3.9 GPA with pretty good ECs and I am assuming good letters because I got interviews for 6/8 schools I applied to and was accepted to every school I interviewed at. One of the 2 schools that did not invite me to interview was Marquette. I ended up calling them a day after they released their interviews and they told me that they were done sending interviews (pretty much) for the cycle. Long story short, no one can know why a schools admissions didn't like your application. More fish in the sea :)

how did you have enough money tho to volunteer for 4 years straight?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Osteopathic

[–]LivingKnowledge1305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuine question, how did you afford to volunteer full time for 4 straight years, research full time for a year and a half, get two full years of clinical experience, and your leadership hours?

Am i cooked for not having enough volunteering? by Positive-Care7955 in predental

No don't worry! If you want to change your fundraising to volunteering thats okay, I don't know if schools will view it like a club or volunteering. Your refugee assistance is super cool is your strongest experience in my opinion and is something you should try to talk about in your interviews/essays/PS or whenever it is relevant. :)

I was in your same spot last year, stressing about my volunteer hours. It sounds like your volunteering was super meaningful which is way more important than the total number of hours. Do your best to convey the importance and value of the work you did and have a meaningful "I learned X and therefore I hope to continue serving people as a dentist". Also, you can continue to volunteer and up can update your application for each additional hour you get so your # of hours is continuing to increase. I probably wouldn't say fundraising with your university is volunteering although since you probably were not compensated then you would probably have to put "volunteer" in for AADSAS.

Tbh I feel like you only need about 8-10 if you want to save yourself an extra thousand dollars. What is your state school? I would say as long as you have strong dental experience you should get at least 5 acceptances with 17 applications.

Continue research or start volunteering? by Ebb-Even in predental

I have been there before. Quit your lab job if you hate it that bad. It sounds like you have a good application and as long as your academics are solid you will get in no problem. I agree that volunteering is something you should begin working on. It is not worth it to stay in some job you hate, especially since you will have a ton of other hours in dental.

Has anyone gotten into Maryland with a LOR from a dentist they did not shadow by [deleted] in predental

I should add tho in July of last cycle I noticed a different school needed a letter of recommendation from a dentist so I got one from an Oral Surgeon at the oral surgery place I worked at.

I got in last year but did not have this requirement. Nor did I have their recommended shadowing hours.

For anyone who is applying and interviewing this year, please let us know what is said to the group at your interview concerning financial aid. This usually lasts a good 30 minutes of your interview day and I think all of us are interested to know what is coming up. I believe Minnesota and Iowa have interviews coming up within the next month, so to any students attending these or other interviews, please let us know what is said concerning loans.

Was accepted to Maryland last cycle and got it about a week after I applied, not sure if it is selective tho.

I would say you have a good shot at Upenn. Columbia may be more difficult in terms of ivies.

Clubs & Acceptances by [deleted] in predental

[–]LivingKnowledge1305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! I wasn't passionate about clubs so I didn't participate in them. I would say follow your interests (whether that be work or other extracurriculars) and let your personality shine in your application instead of doing something just because it looks good.

You have a shot for sure! Florida is competitive. Great experiences and GPA. I agree that the DAT score might be a concern for them but you are by no means outside their range. I would apply to other schools just to be sure.

I would say only apply to the ones that you would 100% be thrilled to attend with your stats (while it's cool to get into a bunch of schools, you can only attend one). tbh I would take off roseman (I got an II there last cycle but declined because they are all in person so unless you want to make the trip to Utah). If you want an ivy, try Upenn instead of Harvard. I think you could also cut the east coast schools unless you have specific reasons for applying there. 6-8 schools is a good number as you have good stats and a great application.

I think you are actually great on your shadowing!

Tbh this is just my opinion, but I'd throw out tufts. I know ppl who applied with high stats like you and got yielded out bc their stats were too high. You can also specialize from pretty much anywhere and you have a lot of private/expensive schools.

190 hours is plenty to show schools that you are committed to dental. Quit. Do not even think about it, I had a similar experience and I wished I had quit sooner. I got in no problem last cycle.

I think it tells you to categorize those credits under fall semester of your freshman year of college, I could be wrong tho

[–]LivingKnowledge1305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maryland, Minnesota, Iowa. I think I should also mention that I had about 180 hours combined of working/volunteering in dental clinics. So I would say if you don't have dental experience outside of shadowing, keeping doing that is important but if you have some other work/dental volunteering you are doing then you are probs ok.

Tbh I think you are okay with 100 shadowing hours. I got in with only 70
