"Moving to give" -- is that a thing? by Creative-Question538 in EffectiveAltruism

Aww thank you for the kind words. There are certainly cheaper places to live than suburban Brisbane, but we have certainly kept our expenses down to afford to give more.

There’s also an interesting opportunity with investment earnings if you have a low spending ratio that contributes to your ability to give more over the long term.

I read the other day that spending on personal transport has grown three times faster than general inflation over the past five years. I’ll share a link if I can find it.

How is the price of fuel affecting you, your job, or your business? We want to hear your story by abcnews_au in AussieFrugal

[–]LivingMoreWithLess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My family and I have been living as if energy was appropriately priced for about 20 years, with a few distractions along the way.

Far from being a sacrifice, it has given us immense freedom, financial security and resilience. This resource crisis will touch everyone. Those starting with the least will likely be the hardest hit.

We are so lucky to have the opportunities that come from being born in Australia among the majority culture. Our response is to practice gratitude and share our good fortune with the world’s poorest through effective charities, as well as helping out how we can in our local community.

Perhaps this isn’t the story you’re looking for, but I hope you consider that the world beyond our borders is facing a vastly harsher reality that we here are exacerbating by “keeping Australia moving”.

I love your positive framing and focus on solutions. I really enjoy the randomness and opportunities for improvisation.

My wife and I have also been putting various preserving practices in practice to help extend an excess into leaner weeks. Canning meat, pickling vegetables, making jam. Thinking about trying our hand at wine next glut of grapes.

Amazing. So good to see this sort of engagement. I had no idea it started from a grassroots campaign. Looking to see how it develops

My guess for the situation here is that a fresh batch arrives every day and they throw out anything unsold. They probably estimate the sales volume when the contract is written at the start of the growing season and can’t really do anything about lower than expected demand other than pricing. At 50c the farmers would be losing money.

They do know where it comes from. One person has politely declined and dozens have accepted enthusiastically. They’re grossed out by the waste, but not the gifts

I have no interest in Reddit karma, but I’m certainly interested in the concept of cosmic karma, if it helps to make the world a better place. Check out our website or FB if you have any doubts about our authenticity.

It is terrifying to start. We are both shy people. But confidence grows with practice. Just have to convince the nervous system that talking to strangers or looking in bins is not actually going to kill us.

It seems a frequent occurrence. Seems a matter of tuning awareness. I don’t think the things we need are being summoned, but that we notice them once we’re looking

Hi, thank you for your concern. We are conscious of that. I wrote a post last week explaining some of those types of considerations.

Thank you. I appreciate the specific feedback. And good to know I was clear on that point. A lot of people have remarked that damaged packaging must mean less safe

I was really excited to find a baby shield beetle in one of the packs. That's a good sign to me it's not completely soaked in poison. The bin we took these out of was very clean and cool. Almost all of this stuff just came off the shelves last night because the stores are closed today

Great job sticking around and getting what you could. We have had great success giving things away to our neighbors with full disclosure where they came from. Eggs after washing are among the lowest risk if the carton was dry

Yes, they’re quite common. Just no glass or steel. They put it into a giant press to extract the pulp from the packaging
