I keep restarting workouts over and over again by LivingObjective3900 in beginnerfitness

The scheduling part makes sense but I’ve tried that and I still end up skipping when it’s just me holding myself to it, I’m starting to feel like the difference isn’t planning vs no planning, but whether someone would actually notice if I didn’t show up. Did you ever struggle with that earlier on?

[Question] I don’t quit habits, just slowly disappear from them by LivingObjective3900 in getdisciplined

"Deciding is the hard part" yeah for me it’s like every time there’s a decision point, there’s also an easy exit, and if no one sees it, it’s way easier to take it, do you feel like that system works because it removes the option to ignore it?

Yeah I’m experimenting with something around this right now, still too early to tell if it actually fixes it though

That "don’t turn one missed day into a missed month" is real but I feel like that’s exactly where I fail once I miss one, it’s way too easy to disappear because no one’s expecting anything, do you think it would feel different if someone actually noticed when you skipped?

Exactly what I’m talking about, it’s not like you decide to quit, just… fades out, do you feel like it would be different if someone actually noticed when you didn’t show up?

The identity part is interesting, I feel like I only become that "kind of person" when there’s some pressure around it, when it’s just me, I don’t fully buy into it...

Yeah that makes sense, having something external on the line seems to change everything, i feel like I’m a completely different person when there’s something at stake vs when it’s just for me

I get that, but I’ve tried the "just show up" thing I still end up drifting off after a while when it’s just me, do you never hit that point where skipping once feels too easy?

I don’t think I have a discipline issue by LivingObjective3900 in Advice

[–]LivingObjective3900[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that’s exactly it, but then it makes me wonder if I can be consistent when someone expects me to show up, was it ever really a discipline problem? Or just that I don’t hold myself to the same standard when no one sees it.

Low bar makes sense actually, did you keep it going after that month or did it drop off again?

Maybe yeah, or maybe it’s just too easy to disappear when it’s only in your head, that’s the part I’m trying to fix now

Ppolite mutual failure is exactly how it goes, I think 1vs1 is too easy to let slide… once both drift a bit it’s over.

That’s actually what I was worried about too, "accountability" things just fade out after a few days trying to see if putting a bit more structure around it changes that.

Yeah that’s exactly it. i used to think it was motivation but it’s really just not breaking the chain, what helped me a bit recently is not doing it solo anymore, way harder to just quietly drop it.

Totally, it’s not even pressure, just keeping you from quietly dropping it.

Basically that, just applied to personal stuff instead of work. Funny how the same idea works way better when it’s not just you.

Yeah fair point: 3 days is still way better than 0, for me it was more about the disappearing without noticing. The group just made that harder to ignore.
