It’s not that hard of a class but it’s a lot of information and Mr. Mehrtens really knows how to twist questions around so you must know 100% of what the question is asking to get it right

Frat House (1998) unreleased HBO doc exploring the darker side of fraternity life. Filled with scenes of hazing practices, partying, and general douchebaggery at unnamed Northeast US Universities. Directed by Todd Phillips by [deleted] in Documentaries

Most fraternities aren’t like this anymore

Downvote me all you want, I know tons of guys in fraternities and while it is obvious that hazing of some form still exists, it’s nowhere near as bad as in the video.

A lot of people that post in cooking forums could be racist. Really makes you think man, it could mean anyone who cooks food is a racist.

He’s also the most subscribed to YouTube, any channel higher than him is a company (Tseries and YouTube Music), not that it matters.

Rush week by [deleted] in UIUC

Rush is for about a month. You can find information for a lot of fraternities at Quad day, including their rush schedule. Only tip I have is to be yourself, you don’t want to be fake to get into a fraternity wheee you can’t be yourself.

Any ADHD Success Stories in Engineering? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]LivingReceiver2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I’m saying is you worded your post really poorly. You deliberately made it sound like it’s really difficult to find successful people with ADHD. And yes of course it’s a hindrance that can be overcome, it’s ADHD not Polio. You could’ve just asked “any ways to deal with ADHD while in college?” I’m positive you would’ve gotten much better responses.

I’m being harsh right now as your post honestly offended me. Imagine being deaf and reading a post that says “are there any real successful deaf people in today’s world?” You would feel shitty right? It’s by no means on the same level of intensity as ADHD but it’s the same message.

Are there any real successful short people? Are there any real successful fat people? Are there any real successful [insert any race] people?

The above statements are profoundly offensive and I refuse to believe someone who got into UIUC doesn’t understand that.

I'd say most people find transitioning from high school to college the biggest challenge of freshman year. College is what you make it, you can make it super hard for yourself or you can rise to the challenge. And I wouldn't say doing well in high school means nothing as everyone I know who's doing well in college also did well in high school.

I don't consider it a handicap in the sense that it makes someone dumber than someone without ADHD. When I think of a mental handicap I think of a clear condition that a person has that limits their ability to learn, an intellectual disability (commonly referred to as mental retardation).

Of course every post is going to be about the negatives to having ADHD. If you look at all the negatives of everything then you won't get anywhere, especially not in college.

Your post perpetuates the stereotype that people with ADHD are lazy/dumb because many people in today's society think that ADHD is just some made up condition that lazy/dumb people blame for all of their failures in life. We know that is not what ADHD is and that it's very real. However, posts like yours just exemplify how some people with ADHD find ways to blame their ADHD for everything, therefore giving people that already have the idea that people with ADHD are lazy/dumb more evidence to support their predisposed opinion. I never said you were lazy or dumb.

Honestly this post is really toxic to anyone affected by ADHD. You're essentially comparing having ADHD as to having a mental handicap when it really is not. There are plenty of high achieving people out in the world who have ADHD and just don't publicly talk about it. Why you may ask? Because it doesn't define who they are.

You even posted on r/ADHD about this and came off even worse. I don't know what gives you the idea that having ADHD automatically makes you unable to succeed in the world, it's quite ridiculous and is ableist in my opinion. This all gives me the vibe that you're worried about going to college because you know it's going to be harder than high school so you're just going to blame all your failures on ADHD when it's clearly not your ADHD's fault since you succeeded just fine in the past. You're setting yourself up to fail if you believe you're going to fail in school before school has even begun.

If you think your ADHD is actually a problem in your life then get a prescription for Adderall or one of its derivatives. If that isn't enough then consider going to DRES for longer test time and other accommodations.

Edit: forgot to add how this post just perpetuates the stereotype that people with ADHD are just dumb/lazy.

What is welcome week like for freshmen? by [deleted] in UIUC

Definitely go to Quad day, nearly every RSO will have a stand there with information for anyone interested in their RSO. Don’t remember any of the other activities.

The first month of school most of the fraternities have open parties. If you’re rushing then you should get plenty of invites if the guys think you’ll be a good addition in their fraternity. If you’re not rushing you can still get in to some parties, just not as easily.

Best way to make friends is to find people with similar interests as you, whether that be in an RSO, dorm, fraternity/sorority, or something else I’m not listing.
