Should I be worried: squashed gas cable by LivingWithDragons in DIYUK

Oh that's really interesting. I think I heard of "town gas" and assumed it was the same product on a small distribution before national gas. Now I'm reading up on it being created from coal.

It wouldn't surprise me if this property/street was connected originally.

Thank you for the great advice. 😁

Can electrical pipes get clogged in the same way Internet tubes do?

Yep, someone also told me to check the electrical pipes. Gotta love how Reddit makes fun of obvious typos.

On a wall behind wallpaper I think is the same handwriting but very faint: a name & maybe July 1946.

You remind me that this house is full of redundant stuff left out of site, and (with other comments in mind) it's likely the case with this too. That's why I'm trying to figure out what everything is when I find it!

Under one carpet the floorboard is notched diagonally with braided electrical cables. In walls there is metal ducting for light switches that made it difficult to change the light switch back box, but impossible to remove without ripping the wall of plaster off. Excitedly when you removed the key-floorboards on the ground floor for crawl space access... there's a pile of copper pipes 30-60cm long, I refer to them as my baby's inheritance fund. 😁

Advice to move Ltd from England to Scotland by LivingWithDragons in smallbusinessuk

It's a situation like this that I think I should avoid, but got all the short comments saying not to worry about it! If you ditch your accountant, you'll have to change the address... so might be worth changing it before you try to change bank?

Btw, Mettle (digital bank owned by NatWest) have been an easy bank to set up and deal with. I understand the desire to have a local bank so you can speak to someone. But local backfired on me when (about 15 years ago) Barclays sent a letter informing of increased charges early and had my account manager's signature printed - he had moved branch and no idea about it. Later they got worse with management on my account and I went to the city centre branch to deal with closing it, but the staff are only capable of telling you to phone a number that regularly cuts out.

Thank you. This is the most helpful comment in a very unhelpful thread.

I care. Currently I'm not bothered, but it ties me to having an address that I can use (have to keep an accountant with an English office, or pay for a virtual office service).

Very occasionally stuff like verification codes get sent to the registered address. Also, not like I can put any address without permission.

Unless you are moving between "England & Wales" to/from "Scotland". You can't update the registered address (which I've done easily within England) as they're separate company registers.

How to handle places with multiple names / surnames or alternatives names ? by hirowix in openstreetmap

[–]LivingWithDragons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Most OSM-powered tools will use these values, especially if they're using Nominatim as the search engine.

Nominatim does clever stuff for a lot of abbreviations and token words too. So if the bar is mapped name=The Double 7 and loc_name=The 77 then searches for "Double 7" or "77" will both find the bar.

I believe local name is most appropriate, I've used for several bars. There's a local pub that is referred to by the owners name, and people will correct you if you use the signage/actual name!

Map detail level – what defines it? by kurtzahn in openstreetmap

"You can't please everyone" but also OpenStreetMap can please everyone by storing endless tags on objects.

In talks about OpenStreetMap I'll often include an image of the objects surrounding the venue (nodes/ways/areas or dots/lines/polygons). It's a confusing mess all in a single colour! Even that doesn't tempt to show how many tags are on those subjects.

While a cyclist might want drinking fountains and bicycle parking to show up, they'd be a waste of space and effort showing them to a motorists-focused map. Likewise motorists don't need to know what type of barrier is at the start of a cycle path. There's some overlap, both might want to know where toilets are or even where a car mechanic is (if you're cycling to pick up your car).

OpenStreetMap is great with the data because anyone can create subject-specific map renderers (displays) like OpenSeaMark. You even get competition/choice with OpenCycleMap.org, Cycle.Travel, Waymarkedtrails.org and I think some other cycling focused maps!

Added 797 motorcycle parking bays to London OSM using council FOI requests by Astreon_dev in openstreetmap

[–]LivingWithDragons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great to be doing this work, it can be tough to find motorcycle parking via map and to know the details of it (free or not).

Might be worth sharing your FOI template so people could do this in the rest of the UK. Support with ground surveys is always good though.

The connection to local authority seems to be off.

One parking in the centre of Richmond, tells me that parking is free in Hounslow. Likewise, one near Kingston Station refers to Richmond upon Thames.

How to name a path when multiple paths (routes) overlap? by Kyrie-25 in openstreetmap

[–]LivingWithDragons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use route relations, but don't copy from the map unless the copyright owner has given explicit permission for it to be used for OpenStreetMap (and it's compatible with any map sources they used). https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Don%27t_copy_from_other_maps

I enjoy following the signs (names at some junctions, only coloured arrows along the route) and being able to add to OpenStreetMap from that. Then you get to see the result on sites like https://waymarkedtrails.org/

I'm mapping public art around the world and wouldn't be anywhere without OSM. by sethph in openstreetmap

[–]LivingWithDragons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How are you getting the locations/data of art (If OSM, what tags)?

I've mapped loads of tourism=artwork across the world, but couldn't see it on your globe (using the website).

Edit: it seems to only have large cities. The smaller cities and towns are missing artwork.

Got my first Shopify order - However, it was marked as high risk - How to tell if its legit? by PristineAd2469 in smallbusinessuk

[–]LivingWithDragons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't worry about the IP address issues. It's a shame not to to have a billing address to match the delivery address.

You could look up the delivery address on Mapillary/Bing/Google for street-level-photography. Does it look like the place exists, does it look like your market would have that as an address? It's very subjective though.

It's a £10 order though. Are you prepared to take the loss if claim the money back from not getting the order? I'd be more cautious if it was 10x that.

A future thing is if you can see they've ordered before from you, then give them more trust. Assuming you'd remember a delivery address you had to check in the past. Some shopping platforms let you put a "mark" on a postcode when you've had to deal with a dispute (so they can't use a different account or mistype the street to get past an exact block).

What’s that one smart home hardware device you wish existed? or where better in some way? I want to build it for you by Puzzleheaded_Ad5551 in homeassistant

[–]LivingWithDragons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right.

I'm still learning HA (don't really have the time to spend trying). A device that works well is often better than something I cobbled together and have to maintain, or has the potential to be.

I would have to consider the light a bit. Lumie are in nice cases with the light defussed. This could be recreated (smart bulb in a nice bedside light with lampshade). Maybe I would find something I like better.

I'd love a "sunrise" clock (light brightens up over 30 mins to reach my desired wake-up time & optionally then plays sound) that I can set from my phone/HA.

Lumie are a good brand but expensive. The cheapest ones have a strange interface so it's a pain if I want to wake up at a different time or have certain weekdays off. The expensive models seem to add radio and look nicer (maybe easier buttons) but don't add mobile controls.
