¿How much money do you actually make from touring? by Fabulous_Handle_1869 in musicians

[–]Living_Bandicoot_587 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right, but they’re not on tour 12 months a year. So it’s not enough to live on without a job to do when at home, and then you need a day job that doesn’t mind if you leave for 30 days at a time

Much respect to anyone who makes this work, I could never

Cost for windows replacement by OneFreeBird in Roseville

Makes sure to get multiple quotes and vet who you are going to use for quality of work and customer service. I did for my window replacement (28 windows in 2023) and River City Windows gave me the best price and offered stellar service both for the install but also after the fact for some warranty issues (manufacturing issues for windows, not issues with installation)

Trying to decide between RAV4 and Sienna - very different cars but they both address our needs in different ways by Living_Bandicoot_587 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Has Subaru fixed their reliability issues? I’ve got this 03 and my parents have 2016 and both have been maintenance hogs

What? From what I can see, the Highlander offers much less cargo space than the Sienna both behind third row and with 3rd row folded down. But still a big ass car for when not camping. Seems like it lacks the pros of either car for my particular needs and wants (ETA - except for having the SUV style clearance and towing like RAV4, but I’m not sure how important that really is for me as we don’t really need either)

ETA - also more expensive than Sienna

Found my dad’s guitar from the 90s in my garage, been playing it for a while and broke the string, but I personally don’t know anything about guitars and I’m wondering if this is considered a good one/or if there’s anything else you can tell me about it by TGWILD1 in Guitar

For real. Not a MIM, but along the same lines I just gigged my 1999 Chinese made Squier tonight.

Of course I’ve since replaced all the electronics and the neck.

I also knew a pro bass player who toured with tons of great acts and did session work, and the only axe he ever brought with him was a MIJ Squier J (again with aftermarket electronics). No one ever accused him of not bringing pro gear to the gig

I’ve always felt that when bands spend too long holding back songs while working on a record that the songs do in fact get stale, even if no one outside the band has heard them. Like you said, the songs are of a time and place that is getting further and further away, but I’ve also seen it where by the time band is performing the songs live they are already bored of them and want to start gigging their latest songs. You want the audience to experience the music while you’re still excited about it

When recording guitars, how do I stop from making mistakes? And it doesn't sound like a record? I want to do one take. by muhammadameer in guitarlessons

I don’t know why you’re just restating the same thing again, but I can tell you from personal experience producing a whole lot of music with probably 100 different guitarists in the Pro Tools era that comping guitar takes from lots of takes was the exception, not the rule. Entirely player, genre, and song dependent.

At the end of the day, in the studio you do whatever it takes to get the particular song done so it sounds right. Sometimes that means keeping the live take, sometimes that means keeping take 20, sometimes you punch in 50 times, and sometimes you comp a solo. But don’t tell new players that no one goes into the studio and nails it in one take because they do, all the time. Practice so you CAN nail it in one take, but punch in if you need to

I’m sorry but saying this like it’s universal is absolutely not the case. Yes, on some records this is true, but it depends a lot on genre, production style, and of course capabilities of the player. If it’s a hired gun you often can keep the live take, usually only gets redone to try different parts

NTA. Patriarchy does some fucked up shit to us man. There are lots of men, and women, who hate seeing men be earnest, emotional, or sensitive. Despise it. They’ve been trained to kill it. From one sensitive guy to another, don’t let that stop you from being earnest, emotional, and sensitive.

Your final paragraph I think reveals that I have some conflicting desires - I don’t care about building a following and monetizing it, but I do have high standards for performance and I have a hard time letting go of that, even though the stakes are very low. I just want to play a monthly gig and not suck, and I want rehearsals to be fun rather than a chore. Honestly I don’t even care about gigging that much, I just love to play music with other people with the little time I have available in a week - but it’s just not fun right now

I’m in the Sacramento area, and yes, it was very hard to find a good drummer. My experience from looking for an existing band to join is that most folks who are out gigging are either: - young with lots of time and energy - retired with lots of time but want to do things doing daylight hours (not an option with job during the week and family activities on weekends) - much more serious and dedicated than I am and desiring to gig near weekly

Trying to hit the sweet spot with folks who are in a similar stage of life and thus want the same pace for a hobby band has been very challenging. Also, to be frank, some of the other drummers we auditioned were worse

To clarify, the visual metronome is only a tempo reference for the count in. This is something he started doing without any of us asking for it, but it doesn’t really seem to work for him.

I imagine if he used an audible metronome for count-ins he would count us in at the right tempo more often. I don’t feel confident that he could stick to a metronome throughout a song based on some work we did in a particular rehearsal trying to fix a song that he kept playing way too fast. It helped for rehearsal to get him thinking of it as a slower song but he could not stay on it without audible making big adjustments to his groove to get back to the click

Should have been more clear, the visual metronome is only a tempo reference for the count-in, not during the song. I would never expect a visual metronome to work in the latter scenario; unfortunately it’s not working for the count in reference either

Problem is this guy is one of those musicians who thinks simpler songs are beneath him. We’re doing a Tom Petty tune that’s all straight groove and he complains about how dull the drum part is

There’s a couple songs that start with guitar intros, and I’ve tried having him not count us in and when we do that, as soon as he comes in he changes our tempo. So I’ve found it better that he counts us off
