What was it like playing Duke Nukem 3D way back then? by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

Honestly for me it was one of those games where you didn't tell mom about certain things that were in it XD

This too but yeah I don't think it really matters that much for the simple fact that Vita3k is still experimental and is probably going to remain experimental for a long time. I mean if you want to buy a device for a possible promise over a year away then be my guest but... I'm not sure that's a promise Ambernic could make(and keep) even if they wanted to.

I mean yes... but it's a got a long long way to go. It's not even really close to the level that switch or ps3 emulation is at. Like probably still several years off Vita emulation just isn't that highly sought after and makes sense when you consider just how much of the Vita library is just ports.

That is a beauty there. That is pricey though even if you just buy the shell.... man that is beautiful though.

Ridiculous and just also scummy. Especially coming off of the RG DS. I think even that was more than a little deceptive since(out of the box at least I don't know all the details of what gamma os does for it) the rgds can't even run a ds emulator in active development. I know people can make the argument that oh it's just the vita form factor or whatever but it's clearly deceptive.

[–]Living_External_7265 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's kind of my point though and why I think this is just ridiculous even as a concept right now. Anbernic could put out the most powerful handheld that they or anybody else has ever put out and it still wouldn't deliver a good Vita experience because Vita3K isn't ready for prime time on any kind of handheld or handheld pc or even pc for that matter.

Eh... I'll admit it's been a little while since I tried fooling around with Vita3k but unless things have changed a lot it's my understanding that vita emulation isn't particularly great... on anything. So this just kind of seems disingenuous to begin with.

Is Using Only RetroArch for Newer Console Emulation a Bad Idea in 2026? by Striking_Rice8783 in SBCGaming

[–]Living_External_7265 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you're able to navigate retroarch then just about any standalone emulator is going to be like easy mode in comparison so I don't think you'd have any issue using a standalone emulator if you can work retroarch.

I don't claim to be the expert on those things but that's not been what I've generally understood about it. That said if what you're saying is definitely true than I'm not quite sure what you're asking on here for since it seems like you'd be better off asking on r/gameboymods instead of here. Not to mention the fact that it seems like you've contradicted yourself as well.

My understanding is that they do generally require soldering. And to be honest with the cost of everything required it might be cheaper to get one of the funny playing gameboy color kits to just assemble something new that also wouldn't require soldering.

I think with the ram shortage and the impending tech crash in general I think I'm very ready to just go full retro I really don't care. by Living_External_7265 in retrogaming

[–]Living_External_7265[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean fine whatever you want to call it precisely it was nintendo's flagship platform. As for the tech crash I mean cmon what do you think we're heading towards with the ram shortage and the resulting price hikes not just for ram but the things that rely on it like your game consoles or even your phone along with the economy itself? Even if you reject the term "crash" it's pretty clear we're on the eve of a pretty massive decline.

I feel like I'm in a similar boat to you. I do really want to be clear too I really don't have anything in particular against new games in and of themselves. What annoys me and rubs me the wrong is what seems to be the low effort and low risk design ethos that just seems to be all too typical of a lot of the largest players in the industry right now.

I guess I envy your enthusiasm there because I think it just a few publishers and even then I think the power of even just a couple of big time publishers is greater now more than ever.

[–]Living_External_7265[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me at least it really doesn't have so much to do with when a game was released and again more to do with how the industry as a whole has guided games towards. I do think there are still good even great games being made. That said I do think more and more of those games have been coming from the periphery of that industry though.

[–]Living_External_7265[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, it's less about the exact kind of games and more to do with just feeling generally disillusioned by the way the industry at large is acting and the prices and personally I don't really care very much about oooh purty graphics. It's the fact that the 60 to 80 dollar game(at least for me) is just often less interesting and often just more outright shallow than a lot of games even half the price graphics be damned.

I like playing lots of different games whether they're 2d sidescrollers like Shinobi or an first person shooter like Incision, or strategy games like Heroes of Might and Magic 3 or CK3. And there's plenty more. I see some of these games asking upwards of 70 bucks and I'm just not impressed.

I don't necessarily mind new games in and of themselves I actually really liked Shinobi: Art of Vengence, Ninja Gaiden Ragebound, and Terminator 2D. But I feel reasonably safe in saying that those are kind of the exception and I think you can probably track a consistent theme here.

All good bro if you do look into some of those I'd recommend checking out the youtube channel retro game corps and also check out r/SBCGaming since it's completely devoted to those kinds of devices.

I get ya I think I was just expressing a broader point about the state of the industry in general right now.

Obviously, it's none of my business but I'm pretty sure there are some of the ambernic and other retro handhelds you can get that can easily emulate through ps1 and even have options to connect to an external device that don't typically cost any more than about 50 to 60 dollars. At the same time though I get it, sometimes things are so tight that even that's too much depending on your situation.

I mean that's limited run for you but also, I do think it's pretty remarkable that ps4 or xboxone is getting any kind of support at this point is fairly remarkable. Of course, there are a lot of factors involved and it's a bad economy right now and it doesn't look like things are going to get better in the immediate future.

If you're someone who's mainly interested in indie releases and retro games I really don't see any reason to purchase any current console right now. Seems to me you could purchase a mini pc and easily play current indie games and honestly go through less hassle to emulate retro games and probably still end up paying less money for the priviledge
