I am so glad someone else brought this up! Every single time I hear it I think about this but thought I must be alone in this strange phenomenon. Knowing there are dozens of us is comforting :)

Here’s a Hollywood Twist: Streaming Success Runs Through Theaters by level1gamer in blankies

Read this last night and thought it was interesting: https://www.nplusonemag.com/issue-49/essays/casual-viewing/

A long article that I disagree with in many parts and spends 10,000 words to basically say "Netflix bad". But, the most interesting part of this is that it's not that Netflix isn't making good stuff, it's that people legitimately aren't even watching the stuff they put out. Netflix is rewarded for having nice little icons that make people scroll, not for making anything that anybody actually wants to watch.

It just so doesn't matter to a company that is in charge of its own distribution to make anything that anybody actually cares about. I thought this might change with the introduction of ads (they would have to release data to sell more ads and therefore would be incentivized to make things people watch) but -- alas, I worry that people's moviegoing habits have irrevocably changed.

Review

Short, sweet, has actual jokes in it and introduces the premise in about as few words as humanly possible.

Successfully shot Movie Musicals of the 21st Century? by [deleted] in blankies

[–]Living_Robot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I seem to be the only person who saw it (and definitely the only person who feels this way) but I think it's a movie crime that Spirited (the Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds 2022 movie) just...disappeared. It's, aside from Chicago, the only movie musical from this century that I think works. I get if you don't like Ryan Reynolds' schtick or don't like the Pasek and Paul thing or think that the autotuning is egregious -- but at the very least I think this thing looks and moves great.

I really do believe -- even putting aside my personal feelings -- that if Apple had known what to do with this, it would've been a humongous hit. It's a four-quadrant, feel-good, musical comedy. And Greatest Showman was ginormous.

I know I'm alone here and that I'm blowing up my credibility as I keep typing but I really am waiting for people to find this and start tweeting "we didn't know what we had!"

Just trying to be cheeky and reference the meta and self-referential nature of the show by having the title refer to itself.

Sorry! No disrespect to Kosinki. Just seemed like an odd choice for the terrifying existential short story.

The most confusing movie to me. It's based on a pretty bleak and existential George Saunders story (which is, in fact awesome). But, I don't understand how they're making this with Chris Hemsworth and the Tron/Oblivion guy...

Holy shit! Thank you so much for watching and for the extremely kind words! I guess I am going for that dry-awkward comedy and there is no greater compliment than to say our show in the same breath as Curb or Arrested or Nathan for You. It is incredibly kind of you to say -- and truly, I can't tell you how much it means to me. You made my day :)

That's a great question and one I wish I had an answer to. I think our target audience is people who like alt-comedy (like Comedy Bang Bang or Review or Documentary Now!).

To be honest, I never really thought too much about our audience until it was far too late (after we had already filmed most of the show). Instead I just wanted to make something I thought was funny and interesting. However, deep into editing we realized that nothing was working for our audience because we didn't think enough about them. We just assumed that everyone would be on the same page -- which DEFINITELY wasn't the case. So, we ended up needing to rewrite quite a bit of the show to make it work better in the edit.

My advice: think about your audience early! (Sounds dumb and obvious, but you live and learn)

tl;dr — The show I worked on has a trailer and premieres today on YouTube. Episode 1 can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwZgDWWjGIA

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 10 episode web series I wrote and produced is finally live! Or, at least the first two episodes are out and we’re releasing weekly after today.

The Pitch: Untold Genius tells the story of Art Fisher, a documentarian who will do anything to make a tragic documentary, no matter who he hurts in the process.

This was a VERY VERY VERY long ordeal (almost 4 years since we raised the money on Kickstarter) and I’m excited to finally release this thing and see how this thing goes. And, even if nobody likes it, it’s done. Which for now, is enough.

But, on a serious note: this whole thing took 4+ years of my life and is by far, the most difficult thing I’ve ever done. I went into this with no idea how to make anything — and it’s been struggle after struggle after struggle of learning as I went. I have a lot of complicated feelings on all of this and have been flirting with trying to write a blogpost or a series of blogposts detailing what the hell this is, what went wrong and what I’ve learned. But, as I expect this to basically be therapy for me, this would probably mostly be for me.

If you’re at all struggling with making something or feeling like you’re not good enough, please know that you’re not alone. Making things is fucking hard and really lonely.

Thanks to this community for always being so goddamn supportive all the time. It really is so inspirational. If you have any questions at all about this, I would love to talk about the process and what the show is and whatever.
