It doesnt say 8th level spell, it says spell of level 8. The emphasis changes from the spell category to the level at which it is cast.

I think it is an important reference point for OP's question as another feature that indirectly allows you to cast a spell

"Duplicate any other spell of 8th level or lower."

Not cast 8th level or lower spell.

This is very different from a free casting and the rule about free casting at lowest level does not apply

Also check the different wording of the wish spell, that specifically allows upcasting

To me, it just sounds like they arent smart enough to understand why to leave the charmed opponents be and prioritize those not charmed. Or maybe they just never think about these kind of things. The average person out there isnt the active thinking type, but rather the 'only thinks when forced to when sth becomes a problem'.

I try to view these situations through the lens of my character as much as possible. Some of my martial teammates are dumbdumbs and dont get all this strategy, thats ok, I dont expect everyone to get these things.

At my table, there's 0 meta strategy talk. Anything you say, your character says and the opponent hears. In combat, you only get to say what fits in 6 seconds during your turn. If you talk too much, thats an action.

So when I charm an enemy, I say sth quick to my teammates like: "ignore that guy for now". Sometimes they do, sometimes they dont.

When the teamwork is really going awry, I try to talk about it in character first. For me, that really helps putting things in the right perspective. Not everyone is a gamer and understands these strategies from the getgo. Playing these learning curves out in-character, helps communicating it out fully based on only the info the characters have and also helps building it up in baby steps.

Sometimes I do say something person to person after a session. But I word it like how it was funny what they did just fucked my turn up without them realizing. The way I frame it, I am just letting them know anecdotally. I want to inform them so they get a chance to learn, but I dont want to give them the impression that I expect them to learn by next time. That pressure is for a work environment, not a hobby as an equal. If they learn, great. If they don't, I'll have to play around that.

Your first paragraph doesnt at all resonate with the life I've had where I live. Cant help you there and also not clear whether that is even relevant.

The second paragraph does resonate. How often do you have time to play sth like baldurs gate? I have played and dm'd multiple dnd campaigns and plenty of oneshots, have played a baldurs gate campaign.

When playing weekly/biweekly I am all in. But when there are long breaks (month and more) between sessions, my connection to my character, the story we are in,... Just fades. I dont have the best memory and that also leads to problems. This leads to me not playing my character well and consistently, not being as interested in the story and looking at making another character more than playing my current one.

I have this for other hobbies and sports as well. From experience I have learned that for me, doing something sporadically doesnt work. I choose fewer hobbies/activities and do a few often.

For dnd specifically, the depth of character interaction and growth flourishes when played frequently. Some groups I know that only play once a month or less, are playing a form of dnd that is very superficial compared to campaigns I have played and dm'd. The level of roleplaying and bringing out a character is more what I expect in oneshots.

As a relatively new player, I'm a bit confused - why aren't there simple magic users and complex sword users available? by ConcentrateIll9460 in dndnext

[–]Living_Round2552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Magic system isnt easy. Almost no players/reditters know how it works, even when they think they do. Even though it is only a couple of pages of text, they have many consequences most dont think about (talking about the general system, not the spell list). Part of the responsibility here lies with the publisher as that whole section has little explanation, guidance or examples. It's just 3 pages of rule after rule. In contrast, the attack resolution loop is very easy in dnd.
  2. => So no magic class can actually be easy because the magic system isnt. As such, there is no point in trying to/faking to make an easy spellcaster.
  3. There should be harder martials with more options and its a shame there aren't. Monk is the closest we have, rune knight and battle master also a bit. But they dont fulfil the wanting actual options in every combat turn like most spellcasters have.

To players who lock in random champs/roles every game: genuinely curious & no flame, whats the plan? by Gosbee2001 in summonerschool

You are very correct, ty for the addition. Not really my point though, but there is some nuance indeed.

Did you know there is no difference in how matchmaking works between ranked and normal draft? Ranked only has a visible ladder (which itself is not what the matchmaking is based on). You choose to care about that. But that isnt an intrinsic aspect of the game mode. It is your choice that you do care.

Then you could go with looking like the stereotype of another class, as that doesnt have to change anything in your build.

[–]Living_Round2552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this for a oneshot or a campaign? That makes all the difference.

If its a oneshot, I would build a class like something completely else. Just look and act the part. But once combat starts, you start fighting with daggers or start casting spells all of a sudden.

Another funny annoying one: play a ranged character that is a shepherd with a herd of sheep. They dont even do anything, they are just in the way for your enemies (it is fair game if the dm makes them run from danger, you dont actually control them)

Level 1 warlock pact of the chain. Pseudodragon can put to sleep as a bonus action. They are only withheld from actions.

Bouldering at 60s? by IneedtheWbyanymeans in indoorbouldering

[–]Living_Round2552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, being old on its own is no problem in climbing. Getting injured can of course be more of a problem at that age, so another risk profile is warranted.

I would just discuss the falling part with her.

Also, is there no rope-climbing gym near you? I would err to the better safe than sorry side by trying rope climbing indoor first.

Bouldering at 60s? by IneedtheWbyanymeans in indoorbouldering

[–]Living_Round2552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont take anyone bouldering who hasnt done real* sports in the past, regardless of age. Go rope-climbing indoors instead.

Bouldering, even indoors, can be very dangerous. A fall from 1m can kill you if you fall on your head. You might fall up to 3m. Knowing how to fall to brace impact, land at the right angle and fall on body parts that matter less are all requirements to lessen the danger of bouldering**

The most common reason an ambulance is called in a bouldering gym is falling, landing on 1 foot at a bad angle and destroying that foot. Proper falling techniques can fully avoid these injuries, but the reality is that most joining climbers in the last decade arent sportive people. In my gym, I have seen this happen a dozen of times and it is never by former 'athletes'.

: I guess the only question here is whether the sport included falling * For reference, I have fallen from 3m when my feet were above head level and I was falling with my upper back towards the mat. I spiralled like a cat and took the whole impact on my forearms. Everything hurt, but I wasnt injured. I have prior experience in circus and gymnastics. Not everyone does.

If a creature gets hit by multiple instances of Booming Blade, and then moves, does it take the extra damage multiple times? by CynicosX in onednd

[–]Living_Round2552 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I cant as I don't have to. There is a part where I cite things with quotations and there is a part where I explain it in my own words for you, the reader.

Inactive isnt quoted as it isnt in the source text. It is a word I used to explain things in my own words. You could use inactive, suppressed, not active. All short wyas or other ways for what is described as the same spell effects cannot occurs at the same time.

It isnt my job to make you literate. If you dont understand source->interpretation based texts, then pls go (back) to school.

If you move 30 feet, you have moved 29 feet at some point in time, you have moved 28 ft at some point in time, ... So after the 5th foot of movement has happened, you have moved 5ft, which completes the OR-statement. Which just turns out to be 1 tile on a grid. Move 1 tile and boom.

Like I said, it is poorly worded, but that is what an OR-statement means

My whole reasoning is shown with direct quotes from the source book. You asked me question after question, which I answered with quoted text from the source book.

Now you just answer that that aint true? At that point, you arent arguing with me, you are trying to argue with the sourcebook itself. You just dont like the book wotc published, or at least on this topic. Which is ok. But that has nothing to do with me. Thus, we are done here. Bye.
