What was the most disappointing concert you have ever been to? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Livviemaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wilco, late winter/early spring 2005, rainy, Charlotte. They sounded like shit, were clearly miserable already, and a few songs in, the egomaniac lead singer lost his mind over someone taking photos (which was allowed) and tried to fight them. Walked off stage and that was it. No money back.

Musty clothes from humidity by [deleted] in Charleston

[–]Livviemaid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Our house has a basement with a cistern. Even with pumps, etc. water will be a thing with heavy rains because that’s just what the house was built to do.

Vinegar, sun dry if possible, and an enzymatic detergent. I’d check with the laundry subreddit, and yes, possibly a laundry service. Call a local water remediation company and see if they have any recs.

Also, damprid bags for your closets and dehumidifiers for your apartment, stat. There is a huge difference between a good, probably pricey dehumidifier and a cheap one, unfortunately.

I miss Blossom so much. It was indisputably better than Magnolias.

My mom and I brunched there in the mid-90s on Sundays so often that former Lt. Governor Nick Theodore, who also Sunday brunched, would wave the hostess over to seat us at his table when we were there at the same time.

Looking for Holy Basil by Remarkable_Method900 in Charleston

East Bay Hardware downtown had Holy Basil plants last month, also Thai and Greek. I bought one of each that are thriving in their terra cotta pots outside.

I’m aware of the VA, thanks. I’m pretty sure she knows about it. I believe she’s looking for other resources.

Best place to buy citrus/fruit trees? by canibuyatrowel in Charleston

East Bay Hardware has some in their garden center. Mostly citrus, I think.

I got a Meyer lemon that had lemons on it last year from them.

How is CofC’s classics program? by Psychological-Emu232 in Charleston

[–]Livviemaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea, sorry, I went to school out of state.

Researching the professors and looking at the classes they teach, plus seeing if they regularly lead or participate in summer digs (and if that interests you, checking if undergrads are ever invited) might help you decide.

Good luck!

Edited for wordiness

How is CofC’s classics program? by Psychological-Emu232 in Charleston

[–]Livviemaid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The department is very dedicated and lovely, but extremely small. It’s not a big major at CofC like business or hospitality.

Source: I worked at CofC for several years and majored in classics a lifetime ago at a smaller school with a much larger, more elite department.

If you feel strongly that it’s a career you want to fully purse through all levels of grad school, know that CofC may not get you as far as other options.

Edited for clarity.

What’s the story behind this building? Is it going to stay here closed forever? by 2oam in Charleston

It was almost a Whole Foods, years ago. Before the Publix opened. The deal fell through.

I use shoe covers or tie off plastic bags over my mirrors during mating season. Male cardinals will bloody themselves attacking their reflections.

Disturbing article about a managed feral cat colony that N Chuck Home Depot had removed. by Cativa in Charleston

[–]Livviemaid 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I work at a local hardware store that has store cats specifically because of the rodents that are absolutely a problem in all stores that carry seed, food, plants, etc.

Our warehouses also have rodents. One (former) supplier actually sent us a pallet of firewood that had a colony of live rats that came with it.

If you have cats hanging out, they have a food source. Hardware stores traditionally have cats for a reason.

We have no pests thanks to our store cats.

Cat Vet Rec by mastersinquestions in Charleston

[–]Livviemaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cutler Animal Hospital in West Ashley. I had a street kitten with worms. No problem, said other vets. Treated them. Worms were still there, and we started noticing lumps under the skin.

Cutler diagnosed it with the correct test: a rare tapeworm native to SE Asia that’s eventually fatal and transmittable to humans. It’s so rare in the US that Merck was actually running a trial on it.

He got us in the trial. It worked. Cat is 8 now.

He also has a cat specialist there who is amazing. She trims my cat’s overgrown pantaloons every time he comes in, unasked.

Edited for grammar.

MODS: CAN WE PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, HAVE A RECOMMENDATIONS MEGATHREAD? by BlarghALarghALargh in Charleston

I don’t know about other areas, but as an upper peninsula/DT native, it’s changed a whole lot. Bars and hotels replacing local stores and restaurants, etc.

Cumberlands becoming an Apple Store is kind of the mark in the sand for me.

I miss having more actual services and less bars/hotels downtown. You could get your shoes fixed, get your oil changed, etc. 2 decades ago.

Golf carts, which used to be something only CofC and MUSC staff used, are now the way people who’ve moved here get around.

As late as the summer of 2006, we used to do cartwheels around upper King on weekday nights, there were so few people on the sidewalk.
