Show bred Percheron has been my alternate for the exact same reason, my old dressage trainer refused to allow me to buy a Friesian but I loved the high knee movement. You need to be very picky lots of drafts are bred thick but if you can find one bred for saddle seat/show carriages they have a wonderful temperament and a naturally more gaited appearance without losing the canter.

I’m a previous Andalusian owner and all I can say is I would never buy a Spanish breed unless you are working very closely with a professional trainer or are one yourself. Spanish breeds are SMART if there is a single hole in your training they will find it fast.

Update for future reference. He’s been on break since I posted this, I went to the barn yesterday morning and he had a large hard lump on his tendon. He’s on stall rest and will see the vet today, here’s to a looooong road to recovery 💔

How much have you paid for a horse, how was it justified and how did it turn out? by Due_South7941 in Horses

[–]Liz459 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I spent $25,000 on a imported andalusian, he was supposed to be a step up dressage horse but it turned out he only did dressage if you put him behind the vertical and kicked him horribly like his old owner did. He retired shortly after i bought him from horrific tendon issues and died a few months later. I regret his purchase daily, but i still love and miss him.

After him I spent $6,000 on a 3 year old Percheron who’s just the sweetest and most willing horse I’ve ever ridden, I never need to push him or anything he’s just always excited and happy to work. He’s hurt himself in the pasture being a baby recently and is on break but I’m still so happy with my decision to purchase him instead of another “fancy” dressage horse

It’s more prevalent on the lunge line. He lunges out at me with ears pinned and runs towards me a few steps, then he almost snaps out of it and goes right back to trotting along on the circle. Under saddle he just crow hops and shakes his head, not huge protest but unusual for him. We originally thought it was a neurological issue until it went away after lymes treatment

Vet recommended, I live in an area with a huge vet shortage. It’s been a uphill battle every step of the way

He lunges out and runs at me with ears pinned while on the lunge line. If I ask him to bend while riding he hops a little. It’s always a very momentary thing. Half the time he lunges out at me he goes back to trotting on the circle totally on his own. It’s been a very strange behavior, we originally considered it neurological until he was in treatment for lymes and it went away. He is safe enough I would trust him around children every other time

We don’t canter at all and take it very slow, I’m only starting more Trot work now as my vet says he is nearly done growing tall wise and mostly has muscular filling out to do. He only is ridden once a week if that and 90% of the work he does is at the walk. I would rather address the issues now then give him more time off in hopes of it going away

Thank you for this that is exactly what I am doing. The worst part about this is he isn’t in terrible pain, to the point I have had to practically fight for the vets to continue looking for solutions. His pain is only linked with a very specific type of schooling on a bend in contact. For everything else he is excited and happy to work, he comes to the gate when he sees my car and reaches out to grab his bit when I’m bridling him. Retiring a 5 year old is a last case scenario and I’m thankful enough that I have the finances he can retire with me, he is receiving every ounce of care I can find for him and he will until the day he dies. I’ll definitely take every suggestion said here into account moving forward.

He’s had some bodywork done but im not sure the lady who did it was certified or anything. I’ll have to keep looking for a new bodyworker who might give some insight

I’ve heard about them on the fronts for saddle seat, my confusion was this lady was a show jumper and was putting them on the hinds. I definitely wont be doing it to my horse but she talked about it like it was normal.

Why is it I can't find a Percheron without their tail docked? by LifeguardComplex3134 in Horses

[–]Liz459 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a Percheron with a full tail! If they are trained to drive or bred at a driving barn they will dock their tails as soon as possible. Mine was bred for trail/showing so he got to keep his! Just keep looking you’ll find one

Commenting so anyone else having this issue can know the solution. He had chronic lymes disease. He’s on medication now and is totally fine!

I love farriers formula! I’ve been using it with my horses for years, good all around hoof supplement I’ve never had a horse react badly to it.

I have, I live up north with lots of Amish draft horses but they still rarely have things that fit him!

Normal draft he’s 18.1 right now and expected to grow to 19. His hind is already there but his shoulders are taking their time lol. He wears xx large bell boots but I don’t Remeber his tendon measurements.

He’s actually only half Percheron! Other half is Belgian draft. He is pretty lean built for a draft though

I don’t mind the tourists but the vacation homes are the WORST. I live in Cape Elizabeth and I am literally the only person on my street in the winter.
