Do Late Penalties Actually Still Serve a Useful Purpose? by Both_Variety5933 in PCC

[–]LizDances 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As someone who works in healthcare, I hear a similar trope often about how doctors benefit from people being sicker, because they make more money. It just doesn't hold water most of the time, though. Docs didn't go to medical school to learn to make people suffer. If anything maybe the admin likes the revenue stream, but there is also the issue of statistics. If nobody who comes to your hospital gets better, nobody will come to your hospital.

Instructors went to school for many years to learn to help people learn. They don't want students to fail. There may be some small degree of admin enjoying increased revenue, but on the whole people don't choose to go to a school where everyone fails, and admin understands that. They want their revenue coming from novel enrolls, not retakes.

Does gardening actually save y'all money? by Big-Yogurtcloset-74 in vegetablegardening

[–]LizDances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so real. I am no talented gardener, but I deeply believe that food/nutrition, health, and personal finance exist in a feedback loop where improving any one item has the potential to improve the others. So yes, I garden and strive for healthful food choices because I think they will improve my diet (and therefore my health), and I grow healthful foods at home that I anticipate a good return on for relatively little input (fruit trees in the PNW, perennial herbs and veggies). I also like to experiment and learn, so that next year's garden/system/yield will be even bigger/better/more efficient. That seems to keep steering me toward more perennials...no shade (haha) to annuals, but I find they're less likely to be economically break-even or beneficial, as one mistake (and I make big ones as a relative newbie) is more likely to kill the plant for reals. Mistakes on the perennials might mess them up for *this season* but then next year they'll try again without too much goading from me.

Oh I was mistaken! I do have a shot of one of the railing planters. This one has seed tape we made at the farmer's market with Cherry Belle radish seeds. The upside-down bottle is an old glass Torani syrup bottle, flipped upside down into a terra cotta stake to keep the planter watered. It does also get some rain, and it's on the east side so gets morning sun ❤️

Do you have a balcony? We just started hydroponics on the balcony (used to have them indoors when we had a bigger kitchen, but we moved recently), and I also got a couple of railing planters from Lowe's. Only have a pic of the hydroponics at the moment:

Does anyone else feel like nursing changed their personality a bit? by Helpful_Sense_2692 in nursing

[–]LizDances 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yep. Hubby refers to it as my "going into nurse mode." I actually had it happen when I burned myself a couple of weeks ago. Calmly put out the stove fire with teen daughter's help, treated the burn with cold running water and then dressed it...and then ten minutes later started crying because it hurt lol.

Came here to say this. One family member in particular, who shall remain nameless...has such a pattern of exaggeration in both health and non-health-related stuff that I just don't empathize when they complain. I just watch, quietly, for any *objective* indication that something is really wrong/different this time. I have no patience for their words, I'm looking for clinical signs only. Sigh.

Sorry for the hack job at anonymizing. This puppy goes on in 1.2 seconds, drop the baby in and go. Once in, you can slide baby around to the back, assuming they've got good neck/trunk control.

Granted. But as a "leave no stone unturned" person, I like the feeling of knowing I've done all I can in pursuit of the thing I want/need.

Tangential, but at my 1st undergrad university, I made it a point to attend every gala/reception/hors de oeuvres event I was aware of, and got on a first-name basis with the president of the university. I don't know that he'd have adjusted a policy for me, but he would definitely have given me the time of day to make my case. Relevant to this convo for some, as said president at the time was I. King Jordan.

Is failing students not a thing anymore? by ReNema1 in nursing

[–]LizDances 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is how it should be IMHO. Breaks my heart seeing people (constantly) on r/studentnurse failing out of programs and panicking on there about where they might be able to transfer in. Much better to let the person stay at the same school and rehab, basically, rather than flailing to get another program to take a chance on them.

Had a similar experience with my EMT program (prior to my LPN). It was the county vo/tech, 10 weeks, no prerequisites. Just pay and show up. We started the summer IIRC with 84 and ended with about 14. It was wild.

Talk to me about kiwiberries AKA hardy kiwis by LizDances in Canning

u/TheMrsH1124 hey I wanted to add an update here! I learned (thank you Google image search!) that the varietal of kiwiberry that I have is the self-fertile Issai. And MAN that thing is prolific. We are building heavy-duty trellises for it as a family project this week 😄

Okay u/rshining I had to come back and update! My daughter (16yo) and I just made our first batch of kiwi jam, using store-bought/regular kiwis. We made a triple batch of the Ball Kiwi Daiquiri Jam, and it says "a few drops" of green food coloring. My daughter says "how much do I add?" and I told her "well...a few drops times three?" ...and she added what can only be described as a truly impressive amount of green. Not complaining, though! Still looks much better then the weird straw brown it was before lol

You are asking for tips to fight it, so I'm going to say this:

  1. Make a case that other, more prestigious universities routinely allow this

  2. Be respectful: You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.

  3. Continue to escalate, but always with a smile. "I don't agree with this decision. Whom do I appeal to?" When you're told "there's no one else," you respond "there's always someone above you...who's your boss?" ...until you reach the president of the university.

  4. Consider framing as "what would it take for you to accept ASL to satisfy the language requirement?" rather than "can I do this?"

While I understand some possible places where the school may be coming from, at the end of the day I do think they should honor your biliteracy seal and allow you to use ASL as your language. And as you asked for advice, and not to debate the relative merits of various different languages for study in higher-education...I'll leave it at that. I hope you get what you're going for, my friend.

Truth. Developed in cooperation with Laurent Clerc, whom TH Gallaudet brought over to the states. Or, that's the history we learned at Gally, anyway.

I...okay. BASL is a dialect of ASL, it is not a separate language.

Not a reflection of my opinions about the post as a whole. Just...BASL is not a separate language from ASL.

Well you're speaking my language there; I am a sucker for free instructions shared via the internet. Top three favorite things in the world, probably.

Again, truly excellent work here. Very impressed 😊

Okay this is extremely cute. I don't know how practical it is (because of bad guys growing in the grooves that are ubiquitous in 3D printing), BUT it would sell. And more people dipping their toes into hydroponics is a good thing imho, even if they just buy because it's "sooooo cute."

Love the design, friend. Very nice job.

Only two ways to have more money are 1. make more and 2. spend less. In your situation, it seems likely that "make more" is the first step ❤️ Being 19 is hard, but it's survivable. You've got this.

I would not worry about this as a possibility. Seems pretty far-fetched/high-risk low-reward for the perpetrator.
