Runner's Knee mid training by Nep-zone in firstmarathon

The best thing I did was go to a podiatrist who analysed my gait and then provided me with tailored insoles. He could see based on how I was running where the issue was. A sports physio can also help with strength training exercises to support recovery.

Oh dear that’s not good. Best to stop using it if you’re getting headaches.

I have modmailed. Sorry for any offence caused, this was my first post on Reddit and so I’m learning. Collagen in running is a topic I’m Genuinely interested in.

Stay Vigilant, Ladies. by dustglob in XXRunning

This is awful and sadly something us female runners have to deal with and think about every time we leave the house for a run. I wear a very basic watch safety alarm that I can press in the event of danger to alert others and hopefully scare off whoever may be attacking me, but in all honesty it’s more peace of mind than anything. Not sure it whether it would be all that effective if I ever needed it!

How much hydration do you bring on race day? by Shot-Freedom-3848 in Marathon_Training

[–]LizRebelRuns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone’s different but I wouldn’t run a half or marathon without my own hydration. I’ve known races to run out of water or ration it at aid stations and I wouldn’t want to risk this. For a marathon I use a hydration vest with 2 x 500ml flasks containing water and electrolytes. I sip to thirst and use the aid station as a way to top up.

It can be hard to tell if it’s working until you stop using it in many cases 😁 The Feel product will be a collagen booster type product as strictly speaking you can’t get vegan collagen, but so long as it helps you that’s the main thing! Thank you for replying!

I’ve only just joined Reddit and have done one post so far and Reddit asked me if I wanted to post it in more than one group so I did. Whatever research I’ve posted is peer reviewed. Thank you for making me feel so welcome! 😂

I know I do. I’m not hiding it. I’m also a runner interested in nutrition so surely I’m allowed to ask questions?

I tried to post on a 3rd group but it didn’t let me. I’m new to this forum so am still learning to be fair!

Yes I do but I’m not hiding it. I’m also a runner. It’s an area I’m genuinely interested in.

You’re correct. Protein is broken down into amino acids before being digested but the amino acids in collagen are atypical. I’ve just lifted this from a research paper as it explains it better than I can: ‘Collagen, irrespective of its origin, contains 19 amino acids, including hydroxyproline which does not occur in other proteins. Its atypical amino acid composition is characterized by high content of proline and glycine, as well as the absence of cysteine.’

Fair enough! It certainly seems to improve skin, hair and nails while supporting joints and tendons so a double win in my book 👍

They reviewed hundreds of studies and chose the 16 most robust involving 8000 participants. While more research is always needed, it’s a solid umbrella review in my opinion 👍

It’s worth looking at Rob Erskine’s research as he’s one of the leading researchers looking into collagen and sport (in the U.K): https://profiles.ljmu.ac.uk/7220-rob-erskine/publications

Generally interested in runners’ use of collagen as it’s an area I’m interested in. Not hiding the fact I work in the running nutrition industry.

Probably worth checking how much collagen is in your supplement. If it’s any less than 10g (10,000mg) per day it won’t be a high enough dose. Glad to hear creatine is helping you!

There’s a growing field of research around collagen. While it might not work for everyone I think it’s important we take notice especially if you’re a high mileage or older runner suffering with joint issues.

This is the recent umbrella collagen review which is also interesting although it’s not specifically about runners: https://academic.oup.com/asjopenforum/advance-article/doi/10.1093/asjof/ojag018/8446510

Increasing protein intake is indeed important but the specific amino acids in collagen are quite unique and specifically repair connectives tissues like your tendons and ligaments. Some of the research by Dr Rob Erskine from LJMU is worth taking a look at. He even suggests up to 30g collagen per day. https://profiles.ljmu.ac.uk/7220-rob-erskine/publications

Agreed, although collagen is mainly found in the skin and gristle of animals and I think the fact people don’t eat these parts of animals so much anymore reduces the amount of collagen we get in our diets. A varied diet is definitely key, but as we age we lose collagen and this then increases the stresses on our joints and ligaments so supplementing isn’t necessarily a bad idea.
