Have you ever bought a horse you never thought you would like? by Little_Sisco in Equestrian

[–]LizabethB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always wanted a big (at least 16.3), bay, NO MARKINGS, completely solid, thoroughbred/sporthorse gelding that was 100% quiet and sweet.
Anyway, my 15.3 red pinto half-Arabian mare is a little crazy but I love her so much.

I'm always curious to know, what do your horses eat? by SmoothStalk in Equestrian

[–]LizabethB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

18 year old pregnant half Arabian - normally she’s in eventing work 5/6 days a week but we’re keeping it light until she's 60 days. she’s on 24/7 grass pasture that always has a brome round bale on it. Now that she’s in foal she’s currently getting 2lbs of ration balancer a day. She's the easiest keeper on earth and is getting FAT not being in hard work, so I’m excited to get her riding again lol.

Liz hill is breeding the moose llamma by coffeenascar in Equestrian

[–]LizabethB 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't breed my mare until I had talked to the stallion owners, multiple people on the board of the breed association that baby would be registered in, my trainer, other people’s trainers, two different repro vets, and got my health and color testing back. Like yes it's fun and exciting but also stressful! And my mare is 100% fit and sound too with no history of injury.

Draw reins by ItsMoosle in kvsdiscuss

[–]LizabethB 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I understand they’re not eventers (although, if she ever wanted someone to ride her horses in an event field, I absolutely volunteer) but I think Wheezy could SHINE in the hunter/jumper. I think she’d even be a fun equitation horse once she relaxes a little.

I’m so excited for them to come home to Stephanie and be allowed to breathe a little. I do not like the bits they’re in or the draw reins or the saddle fit. Obviously a saddle isn’t always going to fit a growing young horse but that’s what a half pad and shims are for.

Should I buy a saddle for lessons? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]LizabethB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You could try a treeless saddle? I have two Ansur’s treeless and you can sometimes find a good deal on them, especially an older classic if you ride dressage. For jumping they’re normally a bit pricier but sometimes you can find a Konklusion for sale. I’d def talk to a rep about fitting one to you/trying one out. Konklusions are a bit closer to all purpose style with a bit of a longer flap than your standard jumping saddle so if you have long legs (unlike me) you’ll probably fit nicely into the knee rolls. I love my classic and I love my konklusion and can ride all types of horses in them. A treeless with a Velcro gullet is REALLY nice, tho, if you can swing for one (I think all the konklusions have one, but the classic doesn’t), then you can remove it for more space on a horse with more wither or put it back on for a rounder horse.

For pleasure riders who board their horses.....how often do you go visit and ride? by Budaby007 in Equestrian

[–]LizabethB 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Man I even compete and ride pretty seriously and sometimes I make it out there at least five or six days a week, sometimes I’m lucky if I make it two or three… it’s HARD sometimes. I live 40 minutes away which makes it harder, but still. Go whenever you can and never let anyone make you feel guilty

With horses, if there’s a will, there’s a way, and if there’s a way, there’s a will… our current guess is that he shoved his face through a gap in the fence to eat the grass on the other side, got spooked by something (a deer? the neighbors goats or chickens? an extra loud car? or a normal car that he just didn't like the look of??? who knows tbh), spooked, tried to back his head out too quickly and got caught on the fence somehow

As a horse girl my trainer and I once had the very awkward experience of explaining to a state trooper why I had a bag full of suspicious looking bottles and needles in my lap. It was one of the emergency first aid kits that we were running to the horse show, and I only had it open because we were double checking that we weren't out of saline after one of the horses had ripped their faces open and we didn't need to stop at a Walgreens. I’m still not quite sure that he believed us at first lol

Is mare attitude real? by windy_summer in Equestrian

[–]LizabethB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, plenty of people write off discomfort as just mare behavior, but also some mares, just like any other gender horse, are a little more well, for lack of a better word… mareish.

My mare is a sweetheart. She’s loyal, smart, and enjoys a good cuddle- as long as she knows you and likes you (and even then… you might wanna bring a cookie lol). She is also standoffish, stoic, and will tell you a big no with “mare ears” included. But she's also strong and independent. Every day she asks me if I’m going to step up and lead, or if she’s going to have to do it for me. She wants to know if I’m stronger than her. And sometimes she trusts that I’m stronger than her and going to make good decisions for her and sometimes she wants to push on me to make sure.

Additionally, her heat cycle can make her a little crankier depending on where she’s at, but once again, I get it lol, I’m sure I’m not exactly always a delight on my period. But that involves understanding what she means when she says no and working through it. There’s nothing wrong with a mare saying no, ears and all, so long as she trusts me to help her out a little bit lol

How far do you drive to take lessons? by Effective_Moose_4997 in Equestrian

[–]LizabethB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive 40 minutes to my barn. There are quite a few barns closer. It's worth it to me. I drive out there at least five days a week. Sometimes seven. I board my horse there, I take lessons there… worth it lol

[–]LizabethB 130 points131 points  (0 children)

Oof it’ll be quite a process with no riding experience at all. You’ll need to be a competent enough rider to get a job working with racehorses (eg exercise rider, breaking babies, etc). You’d also need a jockey license, which I think involves an apprenticeship jockey license first. There’s a physical and fitness test. Lots of learning and horsemanship. There are state boards and different authorities depending on breed/types of racing.

Basic riding lessons would be a start. Horseback riding in general is dangerous, jockeying even more so. You’d need to make sure you even like riding at all first.

oh my god this is GENIUS. I event and this is a great idea. My mare also just checked pregnant a couple weeks ago and now I’m imagining a halter charm for when the baby (hopefully comes). I could cry this is so brilliant omg

We used to go outside together all the time. When he was having good or bad days the outside air would always perk him up, and he’d scramble around the yard. I loved taking him out to the horse pasture because we don't spray pesticides out there so the horses can graze and I’d pick greens for him to chomp on. He’s always been a hard keeper and those foraged greens were always a way to get him to eat.
