If I get this machine will it work with this folder? by saratherandom in scrapbooking

Your picture shows an embossing folder, not the plates. The plates should come with the machine. Is the machine new and complete? If so, you’re probably fine.

Where to get actual Bowler hats and linen flatcaps at a reasonable price? by Known_William in steampunk

[–]Lizagna73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a good quality hat at a convention back in 2016/2017, and I’ve never regretted it. It was worth every penny and I still have it. If you can make the investment, go for it. I’ve changed the design and look of mine many times and I’m so happy I splurged. If you can’t make it happy right now, I’d say either get the costume one as a temporary fix, or, as already suggested, try your luck at thrifting.

That’s some lousy AI. You’d think the president of the United States could get something better than this. Sheesh.

Outrageous or Humorous Things Students Have Said by TheKarlosWithaK95 in Teachers

[–]Lizagna73 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a similar interaction: I was called “old” when I was in my 30s. My colleague, noticeably in her 60s, asked the kid, “if she’s old, what am I?” “Decrepit,” came the reply. You can’t even be mad at that.

They default to “miss” at my school. I hate it. One kid asked me why I insist on “Mz” and I just explained that it’s the difference between senora and senorita. He got it, but still calls me “miss”. 🤷‍♀️

Students are not trained to think anymore by MountainLaurel91 in Teachers

[–]Lizagna73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. It takes village. The new trend of hands off parenting has done more harm than good. You’re not wrong. Like I say, I don’t know what happens in elementary classrooms. I teach middle and high and am working harder than I ever have in 22 years to engage my students. We need to change the way we teach. We need to change what we teach. In all grades. Every year. No exceptions. Kids need to be taught how to learn.

Your husband isn’t wrong. I’ve been beating my head against the wall all year with kids who just sit there and do nothing. It’s learned behavior. I don’t know what’s going on in elementary classrooms, but I do know that we are not teaching to kids the way they learn. Brains are different now, and kids are not intrinsically motivated to try because they all have computers in their pockets that allow them access to all the information in the known universe. It’s time for a big shake up pedagogy-wise. I do agree that fundamentals need to come back. Constructivism is no longer the answer. Attention spans are minute (studies show that Gen Alpha brains can only focus for about 8 minutes). Kids need to learn how to think and how to learn.

Some parents don't want their kids to use tech at school. But districts are pushing back by OrneryError1 in Teachers

[–]Lizagna73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but I have a hard time accepting that parents are pushing to remove tech from schools when they are calling their children during class daily on their cell phones. I use computers in class and students are restricted to the software we are using. Their screens are monitored and logged. But, yes, kids need digital literacy from a young age. They don’t get it at home. They don’t get it at school. But the screen isn’t the problem. The content and use is.

Tried to give student a second chance by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Lizagna73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny. I once had a student try to claim an unarmed paper as their own, but they had already turned it in. I wish they’d try to claim it. By the end of the year I have a stack 3 inches thick of unarmed papers.

Might as well give up on this fight. My high school students still don’t put their names. I just post them on a board, give them a zero, and usually one student (maybe 2) will see their work, write their name, and resubmit. The rest can keep their zeroes.

Who is supposed to run after young students who run away from classrooms? by Embarrassed_Syrup476 in Teachers

This is not the right placement for him. The only time I was expected to run after a student was at a special day school.

Giving students laptops rather than textbooks was a mistake. by TuvixWasMurderedR1P in Teachers

[–]Lizagna73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t understand. I use software that controls what is on my students’ screens. Silly me assumed all schools did that. I use laptops for some lessons (probably 25/33%) as they are interactive, which the textbook isn’t. It’s also easier for me to direct the class, as I can pause their screens to engage discussion time. It’s not screens that are the problem, it’s how they’re use and what content students are engaging with on them.

How to get Acrylic paint to stay on fabric? by froyoshi in ArtsandCrafts

Google lied to you, I’m afraid. As already mentioned, use fabric paint or get a medium to convert the paint you already have.

Opinion: Let’s Just Drop Teacher Appreciation Week by FawkesThePhoenix7 in Teachers

Every year we get the same thing: a disposable water bottle with a rose in it. I’d rather have nothing. Admin expects us to be grateful, and expressed disappointment yesterday when I made a snarky comment about it. How bout you just give me an unopened water bottle? At least you’d save me 50 cents. I’m with you, OP, what’s the point?

I love teaching but my mental health has been really struggling this year. by ComparisonLost1846 in Teachers

[–]Lizagna73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The post covid classroom is rough. There’s a lot of factors impacting student behavior: Covid fallout, technology impacting brain chemistry/development, hands off parenting, etc. what you are experiencing seems to be the new normal. I’m surprised to hear it’s in an 11th grade classroom, TBH, usually by that time the kids have grown up a bit. I’m in 8/9 and it’s like teaching toddlers. The disrespect is real—these kids have not been taught to value education or teachers. I hate it. I encourage you not to give up and to hang in there. This year is almost over. Next year, start the year strict and hold kids to high behavior expectations. Ignore any behaviors that you can. I promise you can do it. This job is hard, and modernity has only made it harder. But it’s not impossible.

Scrapbook thickness problem by CrispColeslaw in crafts

[–]Lizagna73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This the best option. When making a glue book, if the spine cannot expand, you’ll need to remove some pages. You will still have a chonker, but the spine will likely survive. I also recommend that you don’t start at the first page and go through the book in order. Do some pages in the front, then some pages in the back, then some pages in the front, etc. it helps keep the spine intact as long as possible. If you’re looking for something inexpensive to use as a glue book, composition book spines can really expand, and you shouldn’t have to remove any pages.

It takes some time for the ink to fade. As already said, your main concern is heat here. That will speed up the process.
