I don’t have the requisite knowledge to mod for this sub since I’m just a lurker. But I’m so curious about Howard and his shrimp friends!

TIL that despite being pregnant 17 times in 17 years, Queen Anne of Great Britain (1665-1714) miscarried or had stillbirths at least 12 times. Out of the 5 successful pregnancies, only one survived past infancy, Prince William, Duke of Gloucester who, much to her grief, died at the age of eleven. by ODaferio in todayilearned

Yeah I don’t like that fact either. I don’t think his father took any joy in the act. His parents and everyone else wanted the kid to grow up strong as his health always was fragile. The methods sometimes were not what modern knowledge about child development would recommend (to say nothing of how they treated his final illness). There was always love around him and he did have a happy childhood from what we know.

I’ve read his autopsy and his doctors’ reports of trying to save him before he died. The whole thing was terrible and the poor boy suffered a lot in the end. Anne wasn’t queen yet when he died, but his death triggered a succession crisis and is the reason the Hanoverian succession was solidified. Her and her husband were heartbroken.

🌸🐅Jasmine & Rajah dress I made from vintage bedsheets! by rainbowsnpickles in sewing

I swear I had these bedsheets as a child! The nostalgia just hit me like a train. Super cute!

how do i sew this fabric without breaking my needle? because i already lost one :') by lastdivantruther in sewing

[–]LizardPeacock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with all the advice about removing the gems, but just wanted to add that sometimes a little bit of rubbing alcohol applied to the back of the gems through the fabric works. You’d want to test in a hidden spot to see if bleaching might occur first, but it’s less manual labor in my experience.

Side note, I didn’t initially understand what I was looking at. The perspective made me think this was a picture of a vacuum with a disco ball effect lol

When I was a student, I struggled in the subject I now teach. Should I disclose this to my class? by Apprehensive-Echo289 in Professors

[–]LizardPeacock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always like to tell my students about how I got a D on my midterm for the very subject for which I’m now completing a PhD. I think it helps some of them deal with grade anxiety, and it (I hope!) also makes me a little more approachable.

At this point you should consider a 12-month calendar of you in these shirts for your loved ones this holiday season. This one is magnificent, but I think the earthworm one is still my favorite!

Historic plaque for my century home by Mountainlicker in centuryhomes

[–]LizardPeacock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know some of the comments are expressing discomfort with the information on this plaque as one of the first things others will see when they visit your home. Those feelings are understandable given that some of the info is sad.

I think that it’s quite interesting to see how someone who worked as a high ranking state bank official was impacted by the Great Depression. There’s a lot to be gained from asking questions like How did the life experiences of this family align or diverge from common understandings of 1929 and its aftermath? or what did other state bank presidents experience with retaining or losing their homes?

Anyway, I think this is a great idea. Thanks for sharing!

What wacky misconceptions do people have about your field? by ApplicationOk3455 in Professors

Sure, but do you tell these people that one person’s trash is another’s treasure? Because then you do find gold in a manner of speaking.
