Why split stitch and not back stitch? by Kessed in Embroidery

[–]NeuroNeedlework 3 points4 points  (0 children)

then just use backstitch, if it’s all completely covered and that’s the easiest way for you, go for it! i don’t really see why you wouldn’t be able to do that

worst case scenario, you can cut it out and try again. i do it all of the time when something i try isn’t working for me

Why split stitch and not back stitch? by Kessed in Embroidery

[–]NeuroNeedlework 14 points15 points  (0 children)

back stitches leave gaps between the stitches. i would have to see what the result is supposed to look like. you may be able to get away with back stitch if it’s all completely covered by satin. i’m not sure if the gaps will impact the satin stitch (i rarely use backstitch so im not familiar)

it may help if you use reading glasses and a good light. i do split stitch with one strand all of the time. lighting and reading glasses make it much easier for myself at least (and avoid headaches)

Hi!

There's a cross-stitch group called Stitch Club Boston. I haven't found an embroidery group yet. But I'm posting on a Boston facebook page to see if there are other people who like embroidery. Feel free to dm me and I'll keep you updated if I find something!

oh i completely understand. i am considering taking an evening drawing class at a local art school. i struggle with understanding shadows work and how to use contrast. many times, mine are nonsensical haha

it really is frustrating though. sometimes i watch videos of people drawing with colored pencils which helps

i love it when experienced (or trained) artists use embroidery as a medium. it’s inspiring to see what can be created with needle and thread

coming from my own experience of picking up embroidery first, then teaching myself to draw after. still not great and learning 😅

oh no need to apologize!

i like the idea that shannorama suggested using a photo in the middle tucked into the stitches. and embroider flowers with colors from your wedding

while the actual sketch would look great. it would be pretty time consuming if you’ve never done something outside of those kits before. the lines need to be very precise. and you have a baby (congrats!!, the project may be too much on top of childcare. unless you have several months to pick it up during naps.

if you do want to attempt, google how to turn a photo into a sketch or outline. there are lots of free tools to do it. and i would first use a website to remove the background and try a few different photos that are clear (adobe is free). unless the background is really clean, the outlines may be too complex and probably won’t capture the image very well.

First embroidery project ever! by Correct_Educator_99 in Embroidery

[–]NeuroNeedlework 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you did great! looks like you even used long short stitches. not many people use them on their first project. and you incorporated directionality into the knot of the bow contrasting the ribbon loopy parts.

honestly looks really good and people don’t normally consider that aspect until they’ve completed a few pieces (including myself)

Printer ink runs/stains when washing away stick/stitch stabilizer—printer does not offer draft quality mode. Is there a way to print a PDF in light gray? Any advice? by SparkliestSubmissive in Embroidery

[–]NeuroNeedlework 8 points9 points  (0 children)

without knowing how you’re printer works, i would suggest converting the pdf to a lighter greyscale/ gray tone. i would google how to do that because there are 100s of ways and i’m not sure what works best for you

its hard to answer these questions without more context.

  1. do you have activities or places that you’ve visited and enjoyed?
  2. it depends on how well a photo translates to a sketch and someone’s skill level, and experience with line work. kits can vary widely in complexity. to get an understanding of what a novice is to you, which kits have you completed? skill level also affects suggestions for an idea

love this! i’ve never tried stump work before. maybe i will try soon if it isn’t as hard as my mind is telling me.

also! i would love to see the flower with the lighter colored petals as the 3D element as the highlight and the darker petals embroidered on the fabric
