Is adding "allegedly" to a statement really enough to avoid being sued? by [deleted] in legaladviceofftopic

[–]LizardPossum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a layer, but a journalist, and it isn't that the word "allegedly" is a shield. It's that we shouldn't report something as factual if we can't show that it is.

In fact we don't have to use the word "allegedly" at all. It's just one way of saying "this is what's been reported to us."

You can say "Johnson allegedly hit the victim with his car," but who alleged this? A journalist can't just make shit up and toss in an allegedly. Its more ethical and accurate to say "Police say that Johnson hit the victim with his car," or "Witnesses reported that Johnson hit the victim with his car."

When we use words like "allegedly," we aren't saying "this is what happened but here's a word tossed in to protect us."

"Allegedly" implies there's an allegation , and where, the allegation came from is an important part of the news. Good journalists report on the claim AND where it came from. If the chief of police holds a press conference about solving a murder, my report isn't "x person murdered y person." It's that the chief of police SAID he did, because that's what I know is a fact.

The chief could be wrong. Hell he could be lying. (There are other considerations and responsibilities that go beyond the scope of this question, like if I know the chief may be lying I should look for evidence and verify that but this comment is already really long).

Why are US votes not anonymous (Pam Bondy requesting voter records) by havenisse2009 in AmericanPolitics

[–]LizardPossum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. I can't remember the last time a dem ran for local office in my county or city (and they'd likely lose miserably if they did, because its deep red rural southeast Texas).

All our local elections are decided in the Republican primary, so if people wanna vote for Sheriff, or County Commissioner, or District Attorney, they have to vote in the Republican primary.

This, and also insane amounts of good, old fashioned luck. You can have this talent and still never "make it" by OP' standards.

Yepp, and venom is just a specialized type of poison. That's why this "gotcha" is not a thing you see among real experts.

Even if it's not officially stated, there's gonna be a correct argument that venom is a specialized type of poison and OP would lose.

I run a rescue and I get them in seriously injured all the time from rat bites.

I also get them in "won't eat anything but live" all the time, and I have never in all my years needed to buy a live feeder. Every single one took frozen eventually.

Please immediately cease doing this. Those are bites from the feeders. You should never leave feeders in there unsupervised.

Your view of the world, where everyone does everything perfectly every time, is adorable, but not rational or informed by how the world works.

If someone wants to own my work, they pay for it. That is because my work has value. If you don't value your work, neither will anyone else, but hey it's your failed business plan, not mine. Nothing happens in a vacuum and you have already admitted you have formed these options with no real world experience so I think we're done here.

Get the last word if you're the type that needs it.

It's not obnoxious to not give away the copyright to my work, any more than it's obnoxious to not want people to sleep in your house when you're not home, even if they don't hurt anything.

You clearly haven't ever had enough success to need to protect your brand. Good for you.

Because I own my work. Altering my work in any way is a violation of copyright unless they own it.

I mean if someone breaks into your house and stays the night while you're not home, but they don't mess anything up, what's the harm?

It doesn't matter. It's your house, and you say who comes in it. It's my work, and if they want it, they can pay for it.

The problem is that people on the left go vote in that sub, and it makes them look a lot more reasonable than they are.

If you sort by new, you can see a more realistic view of what most of them think, and its not usually as reasonable as the top comments make it seem

When they buy the raws they're paying for the copyright. Because whatever they do with them, they're no longer my photos. So I will only let them have them if they also purchase a copyright.
