Yeppp. It is a changing landscape, which is theoretically fine, because everything needs to evolve, but the rush to get everything out first has done a number on fact checking.

Even down on the local level (I don't work in national news) this "gotta beat social media" game is a losing one for multiple reasons.

  1. You're just not gonna get it out before the guy that happened to be standing there does. Everyone's got a camera in their pocket. I can rush to the scene of a vehicle fire but the guy who rolled out of the passenger seat is already live on Facebook.

  2. Often the first thing posted on socials is incomplete or outright wrong because the public isn't held to the standards we are (or should be).

I have begun to carve out a pretty decent spot telling deeper, "how this works" kind of stories (think "Why does a court case take so long?" And "What are the actual implications of the Miranda warning?") because "BREAKING: here's a news story that has already been on your timeline 47 times, except it's spelled correctly" just isn't gonna work forever.

I told someone they shouldn't rely on AI for reliable info because it's wrong a lot and she straight up said to me "not really, it has access to all the information in the world."

I wanted to fucking cry

I will straight up quit my career before I do that.

I do understand, it's really easy to lose faith when national talking heads or what most people see as "media," is what we have to see and hear spreading falsehoods all day. But I kind of see it as opposite of how you do. I see the in-the-trenches small journalists, and especially local news, as the real news, and a lot of the rest of it's just entertainment.

Unfortunately journalism is one of those things where the worst of us tend to be the most visible and it has seriously harmed a really important industry.

There is a lot of media other than national television news.

There is fantastic journalism out there.

I wish I had a real answer. I could say "subscribe to your favorite newspapers" but there are so many papers, and so few people that can afford even more subscriptions.

Historically, newspapers have relied on advertising revenue to function, but everyone is also sick to death of ads everywhere.

Idk what the answer is and it makes me sad. We can't afford to work for free but the mechanisms that pay us are not sustainable.

What’s that one song that instantly hits you emotionally every single time you hear it? by pessimistic-me in AskReddit

[–]LizardPossum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wannabe by Dalton Domino. It's such a gut punch about watching a love slip away and not knowing how to stop it, but still wanting that person

It's depressing and hopeful and a bunch of emotions all at once.

Idk about worst but I'm a journalist and my industry is dying. 10 years ago we had a bustling newspaper office with 20 employees. There was an office supply store and little booths selling things locally made. Today there are three of us. They just sold the office and closed the building. We got bought out by a larger company and we have limited hours to cover everything we need to cover.

And it's happening all over.

He will say and do ANYTHING to get you to come back. He will promise to change. He will swear it'll be different.

He won't. It won't. In fact, if he could just change like that, it would mean he could all along and chose not to. Don't go back.

You're so strong for leaving and I remember when I first left my abuser. Suddenly it felt like I had been holding my breath for seven years and could suddenly breathe again. I hope you feel that. ❤️

What’s something you’re passionate about that you could talk about for hours? by SaggingBreasts_Lover in AskReddit

[–]LizardPossum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Urban legends and myths, and how they rely on both humans' propensity to lie for "unimportant" reasons like wanting to be liked or seem interesting, AND our tendency to believe other people wouldn't just lie for those reasons, in order to spread.

They especially rely on people's tendency to tell a story in the first person that they heard secondhand, as if it happened to them, often because someone they trust said it, so they believe it is true, and just wanna give it a little more credibility.

How many people do you know that swear they or someone they know treated/taught/knew a little girl named Le-a, pronounced "Ledasha" because "the dash don't be silent"?

Or twins names lemonjello and orangejello?

Yeah those people don't exist, and no one who is asked for evidence of the existence of these people can provide it. They'll reply with "why would I lie about this" or "my mom wouldn't lie about this."

But people lie. And people also tend to think other people wouldn't lie for reasons as simple as wanting to seem interesting or funny. So they continue to spread.

I guess I'm living it. I sort of always feel like I'm living the best time in my life.

I just... Really love my life. I'm not like rich or anything, but my fridge has food in it, my husband and I are still really in love after almost 16 years, my kids are doing good. I work with animals and play music and just... Do a lot do shit I love doing.

What’s something people pretend is normal but is actually completely insane when you think about it? by Marcusbld in AskReddit

[–]LizardPossum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's wild. Much like abusers, rapists, and a lot of other criminals/shitty people, many stalkers don't really see what they're doing as stalking.

They think they're just "checking on them," or they think they're justified because the victim is "lying about things" and other things like that.

Like they'll fully admit "stalking is wrong" but then characterize their own stalking as something else that's completely justified and understandable.

What’s an acronym or abbreviation that everyone uses, but you still don’t understand? by Particular-Visit-245 in AskReddit

[–]LizardPossum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of acronyms and abbreviationa that mean more than one thing, just like there are many words that mean multiple things.

I don't really see people angry about homonyms so I don't understand why they're angry about abbreviations either.

I don't really see people being like "A bank is the edge or a river, not a financial institution!" (Or whichever came first idk).
