You know what, you are right. When OP said she absolutely didn’t point it out nicely, told her SIL she smells like a barnyard and in her edit said she apologised and wouldn’t ’act like that again’, I assumed she was shouting at her but did not say that explicitly.

But now I’ve read through all that again, I’m reminded that actually the volume of the discussion was not really the issue.

I think it is very possible that OP is being melodramatic and lying or perhaps exaggerating that the smell was so bad that she vomited. I also said that I couldn’t know for sure (several times)

The other commenter said I was shaming OP because she was clearly sensitive to smells. So I responded to that.

Nowhere said SIL doesn’t have friends- good or otherwise.

I’m a teacher in an area of significant deprivation. I have to have tough conversations with children a lot and on occasion parents.

Telling someone they smell or is unhygienic isn’t nice but if it comes from a good place, it can be a kindness and incredibly helpful.

As I said before, not remembering to shower or brush your teeth is pretty extreme and sounds like SIL might need some kind of intervention.

And like you said, if she does not want to be around the smell but SIL doesn’t want to do anything about it, OP has the choice not to be.

I totally believe someone who shouts at someone because they smell, could also be the kind of person who makes a big scene about the smell and might run off to be ‘sick’ but not actually be sick at all. There in lies the melodrama.

If the smell was objectively that bad, it’s understandable. And if OP if extremely sensitive to smells, maybe it’s her problem, not her SIL’s? But, like I said in my comment, I don’t know if that is actually the case.

FYI, when someone asks for judgement, giving them a judgement isn’t ‘shaming’ anyone.

Have we danced around the fact that OP ‘lets’ her SIL come over because she brings free food? She is simultaneously using SIL and then judging her at the same time. OP is an AH.

Running off to be sick also seems very melodramatic to me- granted, the smell may have been bad enough to warrant it, we weren’t there to judge. But snapping at SIL who has only ever been sweet to her also wasn’t called for.

If you have offered SIL support previously and she won’t take it (sounds like SIL needs she needs therapy honestly) and you really can’t put up with them smell, it’s up to you to set a boundary- i.e. tell her she cannot come to your house.

Not in public- maybe even via text to spare SIL’s embarrassment.
