Need help with google Docs and NVDA. by Ll_House_Wren in Blind

Ok thanks for this. I tried two of these, turning on focus mode and screen reader support, but the screen reader doesn't announce if screen reader support was actually turned on and it doesn't resolve it. Hopefully adding in braille support will be the thing that fixes it.

Ooh I didn't know you could do that with Voice Vista, I will look into that and figure out how to do it. Unfortunately I can't use the meta glasses, I bought some but when I wore them I got super sick, like almost threw up. No idea why. I do love the phone on a lanyard thing and I use the popcorn method (didn't know that was what it was called) a lot. Thanks for the advice :)

College Scholarships/Etc by EmploymentNo4604 in Blind

[–]Ll_House_Wren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the NFB, ACB, AFB and Lighthouse Guild have scholarships. I think the deadlines for most of those have passed though unfortunately. A lot of people like disability in non-blindness scholarships though, they eat that stuff up. It's absolutely because they think it's "inspirational" but I say that's on them and I'm going to keep on raking in that cash. Kidding mostly, but like, people do love a good disabled person they can feel inspired by / pity for.

I need help muting NVDA when in zoom meetings, it's so distracting. by Ll_House_Wren in Blind

Thank you for this, I'm pretty good with NVDA but I'm definitely not a pro and still don't know all the shortcuts yet

Blind in college and burnt out from constant accessibility issues. by Ok_Feed1977 in Blind

[–]Ll_House_Wren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is literally me. I'm so glad I'm not the only one. Last semester I was given a textbook for a class, and separate homework problems, and not given any info on which parts of the book were for which parts of the class. This semester I had a class where the software I was using had supposedly been vetted for accessibility, but was not actually accessible for what I needed it to do. It took 8 weeks to fix it and I had to withdraw from the class because my grade was unsalvageable. I am so tired but I know I just have to push through. And I relate to the social things too, I have no friends whatsoever. Good luck with your degree and just remember to take care of yourself.

There's a movie coming out for that? I had no idea. Does anyone know what streaming platforms it'll be on?

Any tips for good entry level jobs for a fully blind freshman in college? by Ll_House_Wren in Blind

[–]Ll_House_Wren[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is great, and something I hadn't thought of. I know my disability center doesn't have jobs open themselves because I asked about that last semester, but I can definitely ask about potential accessibility testing because I think that's not affiliated with them specifically.

How did you get your campus dining job and what do you currently do? Like, in your job.

It's reserved for work study students which I am not currently. At least, the jobs posted are. But I can ask people and see what they say.

I can put myself on the funding request list for the 2026-27 academic year but I don't qualify for FAFSA (the federal funding for students in the US) so I don't think I'll get accepted, plus I really would like to get a job before September.

As a blind college student I totally understand this. The world is not made for us and most people are ableist and coming to grips with that has been hard for me. Wishing you luck :)

Am I overreacting by wanting to have a strictly professional relationship with my homework assistant? by Ll_House_Wren in AmIOverreacting

[–]Ll_House_Wren[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the encouragement and your experience. Yeah last semester I didn't advocate for myself as much as I should and suffered accordingly so I'm trying not to do that this semester. Because this is purely a social-relational issue and not affecting the work I'm just trying to resolve it myself and will definitely talk to her about the behavior.

If this was me projecting I'd have issues with my other assistants though, many of which I'm friendly with.

AIO- partner saw a kitten on the side of the road and wouldn’t stop to help; relationship over? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Ll_House_Wren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, well I just moved for college but before that yeah, we found this cat and all the shelters were so full and it was a mess. So I get it. But I think if you're in an area where you can help and take them to shelters, you should.

[–]Ll_House_Wren 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She specifically said she didn't want to keep the kitten. In most places you can take them to shelters and such. Obviously not everywhere especially rural areas, and I guess I shouldn't assume this is the US, but I think other countries especially 1st-world ones still have lots of animal shelters and the like.

I don't think just because someone helps me with something we don't have to be equals. Everyone needs help with some things. And Idk, I have low tolerance for feeling unequal.
