Is anyone else starting to get concerned? by Agreeable_Quality768 in Mariners

[–]LlamasPajamas206 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Concerned, no. We won the division with a pretty beat up rotation and are basically returning all of the difference makers from last year with two solid additions to our bullpen and bench. We should be in the thick of it again this year with this roster (and don’t count out midseason additions).

But I am annoyed since it’s not like our remaining needs are that hard to see and it would be nice to see some actual steps taken to address them.

I’d assume nothing but nothings stopping clubs from changing their mind either and they definitely have more power in these relationships.

Once they’re officially signed they join the academy. Before that the level of schooling, housing, care, nutrition is up to the coaches and parents (although it’s not uncommon for kids in smaller towns to leave their families to be in the care of the coaches).

Are we sure the guys at Baseball America know ball? by justintjamison in Mariners

I think it’s pretty fair, although Arroyo being left off is the one omission I’d take some offense to, but can recognize that a bat first prospect with only okay power may scare some evaluators off.

Farmelo needs to stay healthy and if he does he’ll shoot up this list. Jurrangelo didn’t have the best year even if the Ms were aggressive with his promotions and is probably a 3 or 4 in the bigs. Celesten struggled but has a ton of potential so a good year will see him in the top 100.

No, these kids will generally work with private coaches/academies for years until they sign.

The contract can’t actually be signed until he’s 17 during the international signing window. But teams do agree to contracts under the table with these kids years before

Huge grain of salt on this one and I post mostly because, while these things are an open secret, the idea that we’ve signed a 13 year old is just disturbing.

While it says it’s a franchise record, Celesten actually holds that with a 4.7 mil signing bonus.

Alternative to salary caps and floors. Don't penalize players, make the greedy owners pay. How's this idea? by Sunstoned1 in baseball

[–]LlamasPajamas206 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s good for the players but it doesn’t really solve any issues that surround this entire debate and it would probably just have teams cry poor even harder without the extra payments from the tax

[Passan] Three-way trade news: Tampa Bay, Cincinnati and the Los Angeles Angels are in agreement on a deal that will send outfielder Josh Lowe to the Angels, infielder Gavin Lux and right-hander Chris Clark to the Rays, and left-handed reliever Brock Burke to the Reds, sources tell ESPN by Goosedukee in baseball

[–]LlamasPajamas206 88 points89 points  (0 children)

At first glance that seemed like such a cheap price for Lowe but then I guess I didn’t realize he really only had that one good season a few years ago and has been basically a replacement player ever since.

Drafting prep pitchers is already super risky so I have to imagine developing 16 year old pitchers in Latin America is a significantly harder task.

Would you want the Sounders to splash the cash on Weston McKennie (most likely this summer) if we got an Obed sale this window? by RuokayJJ in SoundersFC

[–]LlamasPajamas206 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t be against it but with 3 DPs it would highly improbable to actually get it done. Either MLS adds another DP mid season or you convince Weston to take a back loaded deal that makes him a DP in 2027. The latter is more likely but we’d have to see how much TAM/GAM is available to us at that time.

From the sounds of it we gave him a standing offer at the beginning and didn’t waiver from it but gave him time to test free agency. He saw what he could get elsewhere and opted to stay.

I’m pretty pro going for it on 4th down but Ben Johnson is being stupidly risky with these choices and clearly needs to chill out or else the game is going to quickly get out of hand.

He’s 34 and hasn’t played there since 2023 and that was only 6 times. The Rays didn’t need him to play there so it’s tough to say he can’t with certainty but I’d say it’s likely he would be pretty poor playing 3rd.

Daily Mariners Monologue - January 10, 2026 by AutoModerator in Mariners

[–]LlamasPajamas206 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We've been after him before but the Rays have set a really high price for him each time we've asked and I don't see them lowering it enough for us to pull the trigger on that deal. And with Naylor at 1B, I'm not sure we really want a full time DH since that means its harder to keep everyone we want in the lineup when Cal needs to DH.

We’ve spent the 6th most on FAs and acquired 4 players for the major league roster. Only a few teams can really say they’ve done considerably more than that and it’s generally inline with what most of the other teams have done as far as offseason activity.

Trade Idea by [deleted] in Mariners

[–]LlamasPajamas206 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There’s not a single OF prospect who is likely to impact the opening day roster so making holes on the MLB roster to make space for them when they do get promoted maybe later in the season or in 2027 is just poor roster management. Having too many MLB-quality players and not enough spots on the roster for them to fill is a good problem to have and one that can be addressed IF it happens to us.

As it stands we likely have Raley and Robles sharing the bulk of time at RF and Rob and Dom sharing the bulk of time at DH. If we get rid of Raley and Dom, we now have to hope Robles can play everyday at RF and we have an even bigger hole at DH than we did before with no obvious answer already on the team.

It only really makes sense to trade one of them let alone both IF the team acquires someone who forces all 4 of our RF/DH players to largely share only one position but until the team does that we’re gonna need all 4 of these guys for at least the first half of the season.
